Are Golf Rangefinders Worth the Hype?

With the amount of golf rangefinders on the market today I bet you are thinking which is the best one for you and more important what should I be looking for if I want to buy one. Here are some tips to get you started.

Accuracy

One of the main reasons golfers use a golf rangefinder is because it takes out all the guess work of calculating the distances you have to play your shot. This allows a golfer to concentrate more on how they are going to play the shot instead of having to make a judgement on the distance. Every golfer makes errors of judgement every time they play a round of golf. So it is vital that you choose a golf rangefinder that provides accurate measurements to suit your every need on the golf course. I my opinion one of the best golf rangefinders for accuracy is without doubt the SkyCaddie SG5 GPS.

Magnification and Targeting Options

I believe accuracy and targeting of you shot are one and the same because you need to determine the distance of where you are on the course to where you want to place your next shot. Basically you need to see what is up in front of you before you decide to make your shot. More often than not you find that you have positioned the ball exactly where you wanted it to go but you find that your next shot is hampered by some form of hazard (bunker, tree, etc). This will have a bearing on the outcome of your score for that hole.

If the golf rangefinder has targeting/magnification options then this will allow you to plan your strokes in advance. This technology is one you should consider when doing your research for golf rangefinders. Having used the Bushnell Laser Golf Rangefinder with Pinseeker technology myself I can honestly say this is a great example of this type of rangefinder.

Gradient and Slope Measurement

This technology is a nice feature to have with a golf rangefinder if you are a weekend golfer because the specifications take into account the gradient and slopes around the golf course, especially when the greens come into play. But, if you are a more serious golfer and play tournament golf well you will find that this type of range finder is not allowed in the majority of tournaments. The Bushnell Laser Golf Rangefinder Slope Edition is a great golf rangefinder that incorporates this type of technology. This is just a few of the things you need to take into consideration when you are looking for the perfect golf rangefinder.

The more you play golf the more you will realize what you need from a golf range finder and it only from your assessment can you determine which is the right one for you. You might also want to check out the accessories that you can get for your golf rangefinder. Because like all pieces of golf equipment you will need to keep the rangefinder in tip-top condition to ensure that you not only get good value for the money you spent but that you keep it in good condition for a long time to come.

As you can see there are numerous different characteristic that you need to take into account when buying a golf rangefinder. But, whatever one you decide to buy you will not regret because it will enhance your overall golf game far more than you ever imagined.

Why You Should Own a Golf GPS System

A Golf GPS system is an electronic device that uses the similar technology that also in your car GPS navigation system. The golf GPS system instantly informs the golfer how far away from the green they are, or what hazards (bunkers, trees, etc) are in the way of their approach to the green. The golfer can use this information to determine the club selection they need to play their shot. In fact some golf GPS systems even recommend the club for you. There are some very strong advantages why golfers should have a golf GPS system as part of the golf accessories.

They Speed Up Play

A round of golf can in some cases take in excess of four hours to five hours and I don’t know about you but where I play a round can sometimes take longer than five hours. Not to say that I am slow golfer, but we all know that your round is governed by who is in front of you. This is where the golf GPS system will change all that. In fact regular use of a golf GPS will reduce not only your round by up to thirty minutes but it will improve your all round game as well. There are a multitude of reasons why golf games are slow but the most common one is the distance of your shot and the club selection to make that shot. By using a golf GPS navigation system you will improve this immensely.

A Golf GPS Rangefinder Reduces Strokes

Most golfers are hell bent on getting their scores down and in-turn reducing their handicap. But, all of us are prone to making mistakes around the golf course. More often than not you will take a wild guess at the distance to the hole and end up getting it all wrong. Either you will end up in the bunker at the front of the green or in the rough around the green. These type of errors of judgement add shots to your round and if you do this over several holes your score increase dramatically. I know, from experience, that it is very discouraging when this happens. Golf is about confidence and there is no better way to build up your confidence than playing good shots all the time. If you owned a golf GPS rangefinder and had all the course information in the palm of your hand there is no doubt that you will get everything right first time. No more guesswork on the distance, no poorer club selection. All you need to do is strike the ball correctly and watch it go exactly where you want it to. Because by using a golf GPS system you will be limiting your errors to how you make your shot and not your judgement around the golf course.

Golf GPS Systems are now Affordable

When golf GPS systems first came on the scene they were pretty damn expensive. They initially started at about $300 and then you had an annual fee to access the course information. But the price has come down dramatically over the years and you can even pick up a decent Golf Buddy golf GPS range finder for under $200 today. Obviously there are still some pretty pricey golf GPS systems around but my advice is to do your research and decide which one suits your need and your finances.

Winning With a GPS Golf Rangefinder

As most golfers know from experience it is not easy to lower your handicap. We all know that practice makes perfect but that is not necessarily the case when it comes to playing golf. But a lot of golfers are turning towards the modern technology of a GPS golf rangefinder to help them improve their golf game.

A GPS golf rangefinder can quickly provide a golfer with all the yardage measurements they require for all the strokes they have to play around the golf course. The golf gps system will include all the hazards, like bunkers, trees bushes, that a golfer might encounter on the golf course.

If you know the distance to the pin then the guess work of club selection is taken out of every golfer’s game. Because if you have to rely on your natural eyesight to guess the distance to determine what club to select well most golfers end up getting it all wrong. It normally takes years of practice to perfect that skill.

It can be a total embarrassment if you have to rely on one of your golfing buddies to help you out. But, with the press of a button all the information you need as right at your fingertips. You will get precise information on the club to choose, where the hazards are positioned, and to top it all the angle that which you should hit the ball for the perfect shot to the green.

Today there are a multitude of golf GPS systems available on the market. Therefore it is important that you do your research to ensure that you get the right GPS golf rangefinder for you. I believe that it is extremely important to choose a golf GPS system that is easy to use and right all the features that you require to improve your golf game.

If you are looking for GPS rangefinder that has pretty basic features then the SkyCaddie SG5 is a very popular choice. This particular golf GPS is very user-friendly and can be easily attached to your golf cart, so it doesn’t interfere with your golf stroke action.

Personally I believe that a GPS golf rangefinder is an invaluable accessory that all golfers who want to improve their game should own. Why go through all the hassles of guessing what club selection, distance yardage etc. Golf is a difficult game at the best of times so when there is technology available to help you then why not use it.

A golf GPS system is that technology and I can guarantee that it will give struggling golfers a more enjoyable round of golf. It will not only improve your golf skills but it will definitely go a long way to reducing your handicap far quicker than sticking to the guessing game!

Frequently Asked Questions About Bushnell's Rangefinders:
Q: Is my laser rangefinder waterproof?
A: All models are water resistant with the exception of Pro 1600 Pinseeker Rangefinder. It is 100% waterproof and can be submerged in water and even floats. Treat the water resistant models much the same as you would a digital camera.

Q: Are the laser rangefinders eye safe?
A: Absolutely, all Yardage Pro products are well within the eye safety limits established by the FDA for Class 1 laser products.

Q: How accurate are Yardage Pro products?
A: All of the Bushnell Laser Rangefinders are accurate to +/- 1 yard.

Q: Can I use my rangefinder on a course that doesn't have reflectors on the pins?
A: Reflectors are not required to use your rangefinder on golf courses. However, they will enhance the effectiveness of your Bushnell Rangefinder.

Q: Is it permissible to use the rangefinder under USGA Rules of Golf?
A: All of our non-Slope units are designed to be permissible when the Local Rule permitting the use of distance-measuring devices is in effect. This is governed by the USGA’s Decision as it relates to Distance Measuring Devices (14-3/0.5 Local Rule Permitting Use of Distance-Measuring Device), which sets forth that players are allowed to use these in rounds conducted under the Rules of Golf when the Committee adopts the Local Rule, as long as they only measure distance. Additionally, the USGA Handicap System manual (Decision 5-1f/2) sets forth that scores made using these distance-only measuring devices are acceptable for handicap purposes, whether or not the Local Rule is in effect.

Q: What are the spots in my monocular?
A: You are actually viewing through an LCD (liquid crystal display). The spots you see are on the surface of the LCD, which in turn is magnified 14X. The LCD’s are built in a clean room; however tiny unseen flaws (to the naked eye) do occur. Also during the installation into the monocular dust will sometimes settle on the surface and many times the dust then cannot be blown off the LCD. Bushnell is working feverishly on the quality of the LCD, but that technology is not mature enough to accommodate our requirements. The spots in no way affect the ranging performance of the device. We realize that our customers have come to expect immaculate optics from Bushnell and be assured that we are working toward that goal.

Q: How far will the Yardage Pro range?
A: These are excellent questions and probably by far our most frequently asked questions. Unfortunately, a quick answer cannot be given. There are many variables that contribute to the ranging performance: Weather conditions - rain, dust, and high humidity will limit the ranging capabilities. Lighting conditions - low light gives the best ranging conditions. Target size - the bigger the target, the better chances of ranging to it. Target reflectivity - Brighter targets, such as white, ranges great; black colored objects range poorly. Target surface - The actual material of the target will affect the range performance - a flat, smooth sign is much easier to range than a matty haired animal. Angle of Incidence - The angle at which the laser hits the target also makes a difference - the closer you are to reflecting the laser off the target at a 90 degree angle, the further you can range. Hand steadiness - this factor will obviously vary from person to person. You think you have a steady hand? Try holding a laser pen pointer steady on a wall 30 feet away. You will be surprised at the amount of movement. The laser is the same way. It illuminates a bigger spot than the pen pointer but you are ranging 1000 feet or more. It doesn't take much movement to have the laser on a different target than what you intend. This will become even more of a factor as people upgrade to longer ranging devices.

Q: What type of battery do the Yardage Pros use? How long will a battery last?
A: This varies by model. See the product grid to determine battery type for your model. A fresh battery should give you 5,000 distances before replacing. But we recommend you replace the battery once a year whether you feel it needs it or not. Bushnell recommends Eveready, Duracell, or similar quality batteries.

OK, so how do we determine which golf GPS system or golf rangefinder will suit your needs. A great place to check out what golf GPS system is the internet. • 30,000+ available courses
  • Course data storage capability up to 20,000 courses
  • No membership fees or course download fees
  • Durable and water-resistant design

  • Scoretracking module
  • Simple and Easy Operation

How it Works:

  • Score Tracking: GolfBuddy's score tracking feature allows you to keep a record of up to 1,000 rounds of golf stored into your unit. In addition to keeping your score, it also stores information for the course you played on and the date you played. This feature comes in handy for keeping your handicap, as well as going back to track your scores on previous rounds that you played at a certain course on a specific day.
  • Calculate Shot Distance: Knowing the actual distance that you hit with each club is critical to playing your best golf. The Mark Feature on the GolfBuddy allows you to measure your shot distance at the touch of a single button. From your current position, all you need to do is take your shot, push the Mark Button on the side of your GolfBuddy and travel towards where your ball has landed, and you will get an accurate measurement of how far you hit your shot.
  • Remaining Distance Display to Targets: (1) Hazard Avoidance--The various natural and man made hazards on the course make up the character of the course and give the golfer varying levels of difficulty. Knowing where these hazards are, and how to avoid them can eliminate strokes from your game. The GolfBuddy displays distance values for each of the "in play" hazards, as well as aspects of the terrain, which affect shot selection and course management. Golf Buddy lists all items, which can affect your play, even if you cannot see them from your present location. (2) Layups and Carries--Knowing the location of a hazard is only one part of the equation. To effectively avoid the hazard you need to know the Lay-up (approach) distance, as well as the distance to pass the item (carry distance). The GolfBuddy gives you each of these values when required. The GolfBuddy is designed to offer you a variety of information screens so that you are constantly aware of every distance.
  • Automatic Course and Hole Recognition: Without GolfBuddy's automatic course recognition feature, sorting through the list of thousands pre-loaded courses to find the course and hole that you are on would be a difficult task. The minute you power on your GolfBuddy, it automatically locates the course and hole that you are on and brings up the yardage information within moments. GolfBuddy's Auto Hole Recognition feature tracks your position on the course and automatically advances to each hole as you play. This allows you to keep your mind focused on your game without having to deal with the trouble of manually setting your unit as you advance towards the next hole.
  • Continuous Distance Updates and Your Current Position: From the moment you turn on your GolfBuddy, it begins measuring distance values to the green and to all target points. Distance measurements are automatically updated so there is no need to manually refresh the screen as you move along the course.
  • Golf Course Customization: In addition to the targets that are already programmed into your unit, GolfBuddy also allows you to add up to 11 additional targets per hole. This allows you to add specific carry distances and preferred lay-up points.
  • Remaining Distance Display to the Green: Knowing the actual distance that you hit with each club is critical to playing your best golf.

Golf Rangefinder Information

Every golfer wants to improve their handicap and start to win their matches. Well why not let a golf GPS system help you to cut out the guess work around the course and allow you to only worry about how you play your shot and not everything else associated with your golf game – the golf gps rangefinder will take care of all  that.

Does a Golf Rangefinder Improve Your Handicap?

Golf, as every golfer knows, is a sport which requires a great deal of mental preparation, pin point accuracy, and precision around the golf course. These are the requirements that every golfer needs to excel at the game. So if something comes along that will alleviate some of these problems for you and in-turn enhance your game then obviously you must consider it.

That is where the golf rangefinder will come into the equation because it not only removes the yardage guessing game every golfer goes through when on the course but it will go a long way in helping you to reduce your handicap.

sight Does a Golf Rangefinder Improve Your Handicap?

By having a golf rangefinder as part of your golfing arsenal you will enjoy the best shot available to you irrespective of where you are on the course. Golf range finders are intended to enhance your golf game simply by providing highly accurate yardage readings to physical objects around the golf course.

The rangefinder emits a laser beam that will focus on an object and then the range finder appraises the distance in the time it will take for the laser beam to bounce back from the subject and return to the rangefinder.

Basically what the golf rangefinder allows a golfer to do is accurately snipe their way to the hole. The golf rangefinder presents the distance instantly and far quicker than if you use a GPS unit. The rangefinder uses a laser beam and the latest digital technology to measure out the yardage to any object.

Many rangefinders also provide you spot-on distance even if the target is blocked by any debris (leaves) or any other hazard present on the golf courses. Golf rangefinders are a necessary accessory for almost any serious golfer. A few of the improved rangefinders that are available will give you 1 yard exactness for approximately 1500 yards distance.

There are a number of the new rangefinders that are almost as small as a new golf ball. They are also very easy to use and due to their small size you can keep them in your trouser pocket. To make the decision on which is the best golf rangefinder for you, then you should consider your own playing level, whether you play regularly in tournaments or you just take the game as a leisurely pastime.

Also you must compare the characteristics of all the available golf range finders and buy the best golf rangefinder that fits your playing level and of course the amount of money you can afford to spend.

Some of the golf rangefinders that are recommend are the Bushnell Medalist, the Bushnell Tour v2. The Leupold's gx-1 and gx-2 models and the SkyCaddie SG5 GPS come highly recommended. If your pocket can afford it then the Bushnell 1500 Pinseeker with its integrated slope measurement technology is a really good rangefinder. And if you and your playing partners can come to terms with the USGA rule infraction,

I advise you to get your hands on this beauty; especially if you like to visit a lot of different courses for the first time. I can honestly say that I have improved my golf game since I purchase my Bushnell Pinseeker rangefinder.

Not only did it help to shave strokes off my handicap but it made me the envy of my playing partners. In fact they started to rely on me to lend it to them so they could try to stop me winning all the time.

If you’re serious about your golf game like I am then you should consider investing in a golf rangefinder. You’ll never regret making the decision; in fact you will wonder why you didn’t do it sooner!
