At the time, there was nothing else like it.

But now there are several competing devices. Actually, you could call some of them copycats of the R10.

In any case, it’s time for an updated look at the trendsetting Garmin R10.

The R10 may have started this product class of affordable golf launch monitors. But does it still rule that class?

WIth newer options like the Rapsodo MLM2PRO, Voice Caddie SC4 Pro, and the Square Golf Launch Monitor, is the R10 still the best choice for budget-conscious golfers?

Or, has it been passed by?

Let’s dive in and find out.

First Impressions of the Garmin R10 Launch Monitor

When the R10 was first released, its presentation and packaging stood out. 

In fact, I initially was pretty floored.

I mean, the design of the R10 is so sleek and compact. It’s roughly the size of a deck of cards. Even now, the size of this device for all that it can do remains incredibly impressive.

But when I first saw that—like I said, there had never been anything like it—I believe the term I blurted out in my initial review was, “badass.”

And it still is. The included hard-shell carrying case feels premium, giving off a high-end vibe that makes a great first impression.

However, its carrying case remains bulkier than competitors like the Rapsodo MLM2PRO, making it slightly less convenient to throw in a golf bag.

A key accessory included with the R10 is its adjustable tripod, which provides a stable base whether on grass or pavement behind a mat.

Another bonus is the included phone mount, allowing for easy access to data on the range, something competing devices don’t offer.

However, compared to the latest competition, the R10 is starting to show its age.

The Voice Caddie SC4 Pro has a built-in display, eliminating the need for a phone or tablet.

And the Square Launch Monitor’s package includes unique accessories like its Swing Stick (which I have some thoughts about.)

Then you’ve got advanced features like the built-in full-swing and slow-motion-impact cameras in the MLM2PRO.

In other words, we’ve seen improvements in the less-than-$1,000 golf launch monitor category.

Bottom line: The R10 still looks and feels premium, but newer devices are offering more convenience right out of the box.

Setting Up the Garmin R10 and Using the Garmin Golf App

From the start, one of the strongest selling points of the R10 has always been its ease of setup.

Seriously, you simply turn it on, pair it with the Garmin Golf app, and start hitting shots. It just works, and fast!

However, while the Bluetooth pairing is simple, the app experience is definitely getting long in the tooth. Garmin is just not keeping up with the advancements introduced by competitors.

With the release of the much higher end Garmin R50, I expected to see more major improvements here – but alas, we’re still waiting.

The Rapsosodo MLM2PRO, for example, has made significant improvements in its app, providing a more professional and polished experience.

Voice Caddie considerably revamped their app experience when they improved the original SC4 to become the new SC4 Pro.

So while the R10 is still quick and easy to set up, it’s once you start using the device with the app when the overall experience starts to feel a little dated and unprofessional compared to all of the options that are now available.

That said, none of the competitors can match the value of the overall Garmin ecosystem. The fact that you pay one $99-a-year subscription fee for access to all of the Garmin benefits, like stat tracking, shot data storage, and Home Tee Hero simulator courses access, and that you get those benefits on all of your Garmin devices is awesome!

I still think the overall ecosystem is one of the strongest selling points for any of the Garmin products, including the R10, as you can see in the video above.

Using the R10 on the Driving Range

If you’re like most golfers, the first thing you’ll do with the R10 is head to the range.

And like I said, the good news is that setup is incredibly easy. If you’ve paired the device before, you simply turn it on, open the Garmin Golf app, hit “Start Training’ and you’re good to go.

Once you’re dialed in, you can select your club and choose from five different display modes, depending on how much data you want to see.

The default view gives you a 3D shot tracer and three customizable stats.

If you want to record your swing with an external camera, the Video Mode automatically saves clips of every shot, which you can review and annotate later.

There are also options to dive deep into stats like launch angle, spin rate, and shot dispersion. And you have the option to keep things super simple by displaying three key numbers in an easy-to-read format.

Personally, I don’t always love to be overwhelmed with advanced data. But knowing that every shot is automatically saved and that I can review my dispersion patterns over time is a huge plus.

For the range sessions, the included phone mount is a simple but underrated feature. It keeps everything easily visible, which is something competing devices don’t offer.

I do wish the R10 had Apple Watch integration, but it’s not a dealbreaker since I can still access everything quickly on my phone.

Garmin R10 Performance and Accuracy vs. the Competition

At launch, the R10 stood out for offering more data points than its competitors at that time. And even today, it remains one of the most metrics-rich sub-$1K launch monitors.

The major caveat? Most of these data points are calculated rather than directly measured. Still, in my experience, the R10 was impressively accurate both relative to its price and to its competitors.

Again, when the R10 first came out, the accuracy for the price was totally groundbreaking.

And even though we now have other options, the R10 still hangs in there and goes toe-to-toe in accuracy with anything in the affordable launch monitor category.

One of my favorite features remains the shot history and dispersion tracking. Every shot is saved, and being able to visually track improvement is a huge advantage.

When compared to similar launch monitors, the R10 still delivers great value, but the competition has caught up.

The Rapsodo MLM2PRO offers built-in cameras for swing and impact video and a far more polished app experience.

The Voice Caddie SC4 Pro eliminates the need for a phone or tablet with its built-in display, plus it offers other attractive features like subscription-free E6 Connect access and built-in swing speed training.

And Square Golf offers a compact, high-accuracy photometric system for those who need an indoor-friendly option, also without subscription fees.

Things are advancing quickly in this space, and I think we’re seeing a combination of the R10 standing the test of time but also starting to show its age in certain aspects.

Simulator Features: R10 vs. Competitors

One of the biggest draws of the R10 is its simulator compatibility. Out of the box, the R10 includes access to five E6 Connect courses, along with compatibility with:

• E6 Connect
• E6 Apex
• GSPro
• Awesome Golf
• The Golf Club 2019
• Creative Golf

Plus, Garmin’s native Home Tee Hero software gives you cartoon or video-game-like graphics for more than 43,000 simulated golf courses from all around the world.

But to get Home Tee Hero or to use the R10 with those third-party options, you have to pay the $99 annual Garmin Golf membership.

That’s a reasonable rate, especially as I said if you’re all-in on the Garmin ecosystem.

But there are now more affordable and more flexible options.

The Voice Caddie SC4 Pro also includes five E6 Connect courses, but it doesn’t require an additional subscription.

And the Rapsodo MLM2PRO includes its own comparable virtual courses, but you can now unlock an MLM2PRO for life for a one-time $499 payment.

The Square allows users to pay per round of simulated golf with a credit-based system, eliminating the need for ongoing subscriptions. And Square doesn’t charge you extra to use their device with third-party software like GSPro.

So while the R10 is still a strong simulator option for the price, we’re now seeing packages that probably make more sense for a lot of users.

Using Home Tee Hero on the Garmin R10

Garmin’s own native simulator golf software, Home Tee Hero, can’t compete detail and graphics-wise with other options, but it’s not supposed to.

Home Tee Hero is more of a cartoon-like experience. The holes are generally shaped like the real thing, but the detail is lacking and the overall feel is more broad stroke.

Garmin did update their Home Tee Hero to add much greater detail and better graphics, but as of now, it’s limited to their new higher-end R50 launch monitor model.

But even with the older version on the R10, Home Tee Hero is still a ton of fun.

You can select literally any golf course in the world and play it out on the driving range or in your simulator studio.

And you know what? Even though it’s not the most advanced software relative to what’s come out since its debut, it’s still really enjoyable.

To be able to play your home course or another course you’re familiar with and see the same shot distances and forced carries as in real life is a lot of fun.

When the R10 first came out, I gushed about the Home Tee Hero experience. Because, once again, we’d never seen anything like it.

I can’t go so over-the-top in 2025 because there are other options now, including Rapsodo’s Courses solution, which is very similar in presentation and execution to Home Tee Hero.

Even if it’s starting to show its age, I still think Home Tee Hero is worthwhile and continues to add value to owning the R10.

Approach R10 User Experience: Where It Shines, Where It Comes up Short

In 2025, the R10’s user experience is a mix of industry-leading convenience and some noticeable areas where it’s beginning to lag behind.

I still like its simplicity. If you’re someone who values easy setup and hassle-free operation, the R10 delivers.

Another major win for the R10 is its shot tracking and data storage. Every session is saved in the Garmin Golf app. As we’ll discuss in a minute, when you look at a competitor like Square, that doesn’t store shot data at all, the R10 compares favorably.

And as noted, the tie-in to the data organization in the larger Garmin ecosystem and things like their golf watches, shot-tracking sensors, and smart rangefinders, makes the R10 experience somewhat timeless.

But as I’ve said, I think Garmin is overdue for an app experience update. I’d like to think it’s coming, but I felt the same way 4 years ago when the R10 came out, so….we’ll see.

Another frustration is that the R10 still lacks smartwatch integration. Garmin, of all companies, should be making full use of its own golf watches. But users still can’t view live shot data on their wrist.

Garmin R10 vs. Rapsodo MLM2PRO

The $699.99 Rapsodo MLM2PRO is likely the most direct competitor to the R10, which sells for $100 less at $599.99. And, because it’s been around longer, we often see the R10 go on sale for as low as $499.99.

Both of these launch monitors rely on Doppler radar to gather data, though the MLM2PRO also incorporates a dual-camera system for more features and enhanced accuracy.

I have to say that Rapsodo’s app experience is better designed and more intuitive. They’ve also worked continuously to improve it, whereas Garmin seems content to just let their R10 app experience go unchanged.

That said, Garmin’s overall ecosystem that includes so many various products is much more robust than Rapsodo’s.

While the R10 retails for less, the one-time $499 lifetime membership with the MLM2PRO makes it less expensive for users who plan to own one of these devices for several years.

Another factor is ease-of-use. Because of its small size and the included phone mount, the R10 remains one of my favorites for convenience.

To me, if accuracy and a better app experience matter most, the MLM2PRO is the better option.

If price, the Garmin ecosystem compatibility, and simplicity are bigger priorities, stick with the R10.

Garmin R10 vs. Voice Caddie SC4 Pro

Voice Caddie recently introduced big upgrades to what was their SC4 model, now relaunching it as the improved SC4 Pro version.

And in doing so, they’ve made it an even stronger competitor to the R10.

Now with an overhauled app experience, more E6 courses included with purchase, and new swing speed training, the SC4 Pro is starting to provide a better value proposition for less money than the R10.

The SC4 Pro has a built-in display; something no other sub-$1,000 simulator capable device can boast.

And, along with the Square, it’s an affordable launch monitor that doesn’t include an annual subscription. That’s another advantage it’s got over the R10.

The new SC4 Pro model includes four additional data metrics that the original didn’t have: spin axis, side spin, backspin, and dispersion. That puts it closer in line with what the R10 delivers.

While I’d rate accuracy between these two devices as similar, I will give the nod to the R10 in terms of overall simulator software compatibility.

It’s great that both of these products come with E6 Connect courses. But beyond that, the Voice Caddie isn’t compatible with anything other than E6, whereas the R10 can work with a range of options.

If you want a screen and no subscriptions, the SC4 Pro is a great pick. If you want better simulator options, go with the R10.

Garmin R10 vs. Square Golf Launch Monitor

The Square is the newest competitor, offering the first optical-based launch monitor system under $1,000.

Because it’s the first-ever of its kind, it’s getting a lot of hype and attention similar to (but nowhere near the fever pitch of) when the R10 came out.

Like the SC4 Pro, there is no annual subscription required with the Square. Instead, they have a credit system where you can pay for simulator golf by the hole. It’s probably a money saver over time for most people, though I don’t like the mental reminder of knowing I’m paying a little bit more every time I want to play even a hole of simulated golf.

The R10, of course, requires the $99-a-year Garmin membership to use its best features. That’s actually a fair value when you look around, but there are a lot of consumers that are going to prefer the no-subscription option of the Square.

Being a camera-based unit that sits next to the golf ball, the Square is definitely a better option for indoor users who are tight on space. The R10, sitting behind the ball, will require a lot more room depth.

One of my biggest knocks on the Square is that there’s no option to store shot data for later review. So that’s a big win for the R10 in this comparison.

I think that if you’re using a launch monitor in a tight space, the Square is ideal. But if you want long-term tracking and app integration, the R10 wins.

Who Should Buy the R10 in 2025?

There’s no question that there are more solid launch monitor options now in 2025, than there were when the R10 launched.

And many of those will be a better fit for most golfers. But not everyone. The R10 still has it’s place.

I think casual golfers who want a simple, portable launch monitor that’s really flexible when it comes to playing simulator golf are still going to want to consider the R10.

And people who want an easy-to-use device to bring to the range are still going to find the R10 to be convenient.

Plus, the whole process of using this launch monitor is seamless. Yes, the app experience is dated, but it works flawlessly.

And as I keep saying, I think the real winners with the R10 in 2025 are the Garmin power users. If you’re in the Garmin camp, it’s always going to make sense to consider the Garmin version of whatever product class you’re looking at.

Final Thoughts on the Garmin R10 Personal Launch Monitor

When I first reviewed the R10, I was absolutely blown away.

Everyone was!

This product started a whole thing—affordable-but-stiill-accurate launch monitors—that is such a big part of the golf technology space in 2025.

But, like it always does, competition came along. Innovations and refinements continued.

The R10 paved the way, but its success also fueled competition, leading to new alternatives that, for many, may be even better choices in the affordable launch monitor category.

Still, the R10 has its place in 2025.

There’s so much information out there, much of it conflicting, that it’s hard to cut through the noise to get to the essence of what you should really be considering if you’re going to buy one of these devices.

There is no one-size-fits-all best.

There’s only what’s best for you.

But if you’ve never owned a launch monitor, how are you supposed to know what “best” even means in this context?

10 Questions to Answer Before Buying a Golf Launch Monitor (or Simulator)

Yeah, shopping for a launch monitor can be a ton of fun. But it can also be really daunting and confusing.

I’ve narrowed it down to what I think are the 10 key questions you need to answer before you buy a golf launch monitor. If you satisfy each one of these criteria, you’re definitely going to have a launch monitor that’s right for you. So, keep reading.

1. Why Do You Want One?

Seriously. It may sound like an obvious question, but not enough people stop to consider it.

So, really, why do you want a golf launch monitor? Like, what are you planning to do with it?

There are no wrong answers, but you need to resolve this question. Are you buying this to get better? To have fun? To play golf in the offseason? Is it to play simulator golf with your buddies?

Of course, it’s almost certainly a combination of all of those things. But it’s important that you identify the primary driving reason you want a launch monitor, as different devices lend themselves to certain use cases better than others.

2. Where Are You Going to Use a Launch Monitor?

We talked about the why. Next is the where.

So, are you planning to use this in your house? Or out in the yard with a hitting net? Or are you looking for something that you can take out to the range for practice sessions? Maybe you want a launch monitor that’s flexible enough to do all of those things.

You want to get really specific in thinking through where you’re planning to use your launch monitor.

For example, if you’re going to use this out on the range, what type of range is it? Will you be hitting only off of natural grass? Because there are certain launch monitors that do better at reading shots hit off of real turf. You don’t want to buy a device and then realize later that it’s limited to only mat use – or worse, is indoor only.

Is the driving range one of those multiple-story facilities with lots of metal surrounding it? If so, a Doppler radar device is most likely going to have interference issues in that environment.

So having a very specific answer to your “where” question is going to make all of the rest of these questions a lot easier to answer.

3. How Much Space Do You Have?

Piggybacking off of the “why” and the “where” questions, do you plan to use your launch monitor indoors?

If so, you need to understand that different devices have different space requirements.

Say you’re considering the Bushnell Launch Pro. That’s an optical device that uses high-speed cameras to collect your shot data. So because of that, it requires a lot less space than if you’re using a Doppler radar-based system, which has to be placed several feet behind the ball and needs enough space in front of the ball to accurately track what that ball is doing.

If you’ve got tight quarters and you don’t have 7 or 8 feet of space behind the ball plus another 7 or 8 feet of space available in front of the ball, then a lot of those Doppler radar-based options are not going to be the right fit and are only going to lead to frustration.

Or maybe you’ve got plenty of space. In that case, a Doppler radar device might be perfect. They provide a lot of flexibility, features, and bang for the buck.

All that to say, space is a huge consideration. You need the right type of device for where you’re going to be using it most.

Oh, and one thing, don’t forget to measure your ceiling height. Nothing would be more frustrating than to buy a launch monitor, get it all set up, and then put a hole in your ceiling because you didn’t plan properly.

Trust me, I’ve been there.

4. Which Technology Do You Prefer?

Assuming space isn’t a dictating factor, is there a technology that you prefer?

There are two main types of golf launch monitor technology: Doppler radar and optical cameras. Some devices use a combination of both.

As I mentioned, a Doppler radar device is something you’re going to place behind the ball, and it’s going to need more space than an optical camera device.

An optical device is going to be placed right next to the golf ball. So for that type of launch monitor, you only need enough room behind you to swing your golf club freely, and you only need about 8 feet in front of you.

So, generally speaking, an optical device is going to require about half as much space as a radar device.

But if you’re trying to spend less than $1,000 or $1,500, the only good optical solution is probably the Square Golf Launch Monitor. So budget, which we’ll discuss below, may be a deciding factor as to which type of technology you go with.

Now, it’s not like optical is always superior to radar. For instance, kind of the gold standard of launch monitors is Trackman, which costs upwards of $30,000 or $40,000, and it is a Doppler radar launch monitor.

Another leader in the space is the $20,000 Foresight QuadMAX, which is an optical launch monitor.

The point is that there are very good, very high-end, very accurate devices available in either the optical or radar camps. It really comes down to what is going to be right for you, your needs, your space, your budget.

But one thing you need to consider is, who will be using this launch monitor?

If you go with an optical device, which sits across from where you’re hitting, that’s really only going to be the right choice if you plan to play with all right- or all left-handed players.

Because, otherwise, you’re going to have to move the launch monitor every time the opposite-handed player takes their turn. Playing a round of simulator golf with a group of people really isn’t going to be a great experience if you’re having to constantly change your setup.

If that’s something you envision doing often, you’re probably better off going with a Doppler radar launch monitor that sits behind you and can very easily accommodate both types of golfers.

The other alternative is if you’re planning to set up a higher-end, dedicated simulator studio, you can use an overhead device. These are optical launch monitors that hang above the hitting area, so they can easily cater to both right- and left-handed golfers.

So if you’re looking for ultimate convenience, an overhead device is the way to go. But they’re also very expensive. At minimum, you’re looking at a spend of about $5,000, which is a much higher minimum than you’d find with either a Doppler or optical unit.

And an overhead device won’t afford you the flexibility of using your launch monitor anywhere beyond in that dedicated space.

5. What’s Your Budget?

This one might be the most important question to answer and the biggest differentiator in helping you decide what options are available to you.

As you might have realized from looking around at launch monitors, these things can cost anywhere from a couple hundred dollars all the way up to 20, 30, 40, 50 thousand dollars, or even more.

In many cases, it’s not just the cost of the launch monitor that you need to consider. This is where we start to see our previous questions funneling down into this one.

For instance, maybe you just want a launch monitor to take out in your backyard. Cool. For under $500, you can get a device that’s going to be reasonably accurate and make practice more fun.

But guess what? You’re still going to need a net to hit into. And you’re going to need a mat to hit off of. All of that needs to factor into your budget.

Another consideration is special golf balls. In many cases, if you want accurate spin data, you need specially marked balls, and they’re kind of expensive. Titleist RCT balls, for instance, cost $70 a dozen.

So, how much should you plan to spend on a golf launch monitor?

If you’re just looking for something that you can take out to the range and have some fun with, you can do it for around $500.

If you’re looking for a nice backyard setup with a net and a mat, you can probably get it done for under $1,000. But I’d recommend budgeting for between $1,000 and $2,000 to make sure you’re getting everything that you need.

If you’re planning to build a simulator studio at home, I think the absolute minimum I’d plan on is about $2,000, but that’s for a fairly janky setup. That might be like if you were using a TV that you already own and didn’t need to buy a projector.

All of the accessories needed to do a sim studio right can add up very quickly and make that cost much more expensive.

If you’re trying to achieve something that’s close to a professional setup, something that really feels like a proper simulator studio, you should probably expect to spend at least $7,500. That’s taking into account all of the things—the launch monitor, the mat, the projector, the impact screen, the special golf balls.

The good news is now there are very good “sim in a box” type packages you can get with all of the most popular launch monitors, that will make this pretty easy.

So while you can do an indoor setup on a budget, just make sure you’re factoring in all of the things you’ll need and how professional you want your setup to look and feel.

As for the launch monitors themselves in a pseudo-professional-type setup, if you’re looking for a basic Doppler radar device, I’d expect to spend a minimum of $500 to $1,000.

That’s going to get you in the range of launch monitors like the Voice Caddie SC4 Pro, the Garmin Approach R10, and the Rapsodo MLM2PRO.

On the optical side in the budget range, you’re pretty much limited to the Square Golf Launch Monitor.

If you have a little bit more money to spend, the FlightScope Mevo+ is my overall best recommendation. If you use our coupon code (BREAKINGEIGHTYPLUS) and if they have any current sales going, you’re going to be able to get that between $1,800-$1,900. And then there are going to be some add-ons if you want extra features and data.

The Mevo+ is my favorite middle-of-the-road device that can do just about everything at a great price point. But, it being a radar device, you need to make sure you have enough space. The Mevo+ is going to need about 15 feet, all-in, for it to record accurate data.

Other than with the Square, if you’re looking for an optical launch monitor, you should plan to spend at least $2,000.

If you can still find one, the outgoing Bushnell Launch Pro ball data only model retails for right around two grand.

It’s being replaced with the Bushnell LPi. It’s similar, but the major differences are that there is no screen, it’s indoor only, but it does come with club data. It will retail for $2,799.

The SkyTrak+ retails for $3,000, but you can often find it for around $2,500.

Then there’s the Uneekor Eye Mini Lite for $2,749.

So, for a good optical device, at minimum you’re probably going to be in that $2,000 to $3,000 range.

For an overhead device, plan to spend $5,000 or quite a bit more.

6. Are You OK with a Subscription?

There’s another budget consideration for you, and that is everyone’s favorite topic: subscriptions.

Most of these golf launch monitors are going to require a subscription, at least if you want to use all of the features they’re capable of or if you want to use them to play third-party simulator software.

As frustrating as that may be, that’s the nature of the game.

Subscription costs can range from a fairly nominal hundred bucks a year up to $500 a year for the FSX software with the subscription-based Foresight Sports or Bushnell launch monitors.

There are subscription-free Foresight launch monitors, but for the GC3S or Bushnell LPi, if you want to use pretty much any software, whether on an iPad or gaming PC, you’re going to have to spend $500 a year.

(The Foresight GC3 doesn’t have a subscription, but does cost thousands more.)

So, as you’re thinking about which launch monitor is right for you, make sure you take the time to research all of the various subscription rates. That’s going to have a big impact on your year-over-year budgeting. The actual cost of ownership over five years may be significantly more than you initially thought.

Now, if you’re just totally opposed to paying a subscription, you do have some options.

One is the Voice Caddie SC4 Pro for around $500.

Another is the Rapsodo MLM2PRO, which is $699 with a subscription fee of $199, but they recently made it so that for $500, you can unlock it for life. So for $1,200 all-in, you can get the Rapsodo MLM2PRO, which is a pretty good deal.

The FlightScope Mevo+ is another device without a subscription. And for all the features that it offers, that’s really one of its biggest selling points.

The Square is another subscription-free device. But you do have to buy credits for every hole of simulator golf you want to play. These are affordable though, and it comes with enough to play 55 full rounds.

When you get to the higher end, there are options from Foresight Sports like the GC3, GCQuad, and QuadMAX.

So, if you don’t want a subscription fee at all, those are the devices I’d take a look at.

7. How Accurate Do You Want It to Be?

Obviously, everyone is looking for the best accuracy. But how much are you willing to pay for improved accuracy?

As you might imagine, when you have launch monitors ranging in price from $200 to $50,000, there are going to be different levels of accuracy.

A lot of the budget launch monitors can do a fairly decent job of getting reasonably close. And for a lot of people, that’s close enough to get a general idea of some of your numbers, which legitimately can help you better understand what’s going on with your golf swing.

Just keep in mind that with a lot of those cheaper devices, the data metrics aren’t actually measured. Instead, they’re calculated using an algorithm.

So devices like the MLM2PRO, the R10, the SC4 Pro, they’re going to have four to six metrics that they’re actually going to measure, and then the rest are going to be calculated. So, essentially, it’s their best guess at what those numbers should be.

As I said, under the right conditions, all of those devices actually do a fairly good job with those guesses. But you should know that they are in fact algorithm-generated guesses.

A general rule of thumb is: The more you’re willing to pay, the more accurate the launch monitor is going to be and the more metrics that it’s going to directly measure as opposed to calculate.

Getting back to our first question, why do you want a golf launch monitor?

Are you just looking to have some fun and want simulator golf to be relatively realistic? Then you don’t need a device that’s perfectly accurate.

On the other hand, if you’re a teaching professional, club fitter, or competitive player, then accuracy is going to be very important. And you’re going to need to spend more money on your device.

In my experience, I’ve found that most people don’t need the absolute supreme level of accuracy.

Every device I’ve mentioned so far, when set up properly, is going to be reasonably accurate.

And that “set up properly” caveat is key. I’ve gotten dozens of emails for literally every one of these devices saying that it’s not accurate or it doesn’t work.

And for all of the same products, I’ve also received dozens of emails from people saying how great the product is, how dead-on accurate it is, how happy they are with their purchase.

The difference between those two experiences, especially with these less-expensive units, comes down to making sure you’re using them in the proper conditions and are taking the time to set them up correctly.

8. What Statistics Are Most Important to You?

This question is related to most of the other questions, including why you want a launch monitor, what kind of budget you have, and how accurate you need it to be.

Do you only really care about learning how far the ball is going with each of your clubs? Great. You can spend quite a bit less than the person who really needs club path data and accurate spin numbers and angle of attack and all of those advanced sorts of metrics.

When you’re shopping for a golf launch monitor, look carefully at what data it includes. Also, pay attention to whether those metrics are actually measured or if they are calculated.

Here’s an example of where people often get surprised. The SkyTrak+ is one of the most popular launch monitors on the market. But guess what? As of March 2025, It doesn’t include angle of attack. And a lot of SkyTrak+ owners don’t figure that out until after they’ve bought the launch monitor.

For a $3,000 device, and for as important as that metric is for a lot of people, not having angle of attack on the SkyTrak+ has led to some frustration.

Many devices also differentiate between ball-only data and club data. So if you want things like carry distance, total distance, spin numbers, and apex, you’re going to be able to get those for less than if you also want club data.

If on the other hand, you want the whole D-Plane suite where you’re getting face-to-path, face-to-target, club path, etc., you’re going to need to spend a little bit more.

For instance, with the FlightScope Mevo+, you have the option to pay for the Pro Package, which is what unlocks all of that advanced club data.

With a unit like the new indoor-only Bushnell LPi, you pay $2,799 and for the first year, you get both ball and club data included. But after that, you have to pay that $500 a year subscription if you want to keep the club data.

It’s important with any of these launch monitors that you fully understand exactly what you’re getting and that it satisfies what you need.

If you don’t care about club statistics, there’s a good chance that you can save some money.

9. What Device Will You Use It On?

Now we’re talking about computer compatibility.

There are some launch monitors with built-in displays that don’t require you to interface with a phone, tablet, or PC. You can just turn on the device and get all of your shot data right on the unit’s display.

The SC4 Pro is one example on the budget side. As for more expensive models, you’ve got the Foresight Sports launch monitors and the Uneekor Eye Mini.

All of those options have built-in screens, which means you can get your numbers with nothing more than the device itself.

But chances are, if you’re spending all of this money, you’re hoping to get the most out of it. And to do that, you’re going to need to interface with an app or a computer program that’s designed to go with the launch monitor.

Most of these devices that I’ve mentioned will have phone apps that you can use to track all of your data and progress over time.

Some of these devices will also have a mobile simulator option. Usually, this means access to something like E6 Connect, where you can play a selection of simulated golf courses on your iPhone or iPad. For this type of setup, you don’t need any additional fancy equipment to play real simulator golf.

But if you’re looking to go all the way and you’re trying to get that true, more professional simulator setup, then there’s a good chance you’re going to need a gaming PC to run the required software.

Of course, that’s going to require you to spend quite a bit more money.

So getting a handle on how different launch monitors work with different simulator software choices and the system requirements that come with those pairings is a really important consideration for your budget as well as what you’re going to be able to do with your launch monitor.

10. What Software Do You Want to Use?

Is there any specific software you are hoping to use?

That’s going to be a key question to answer before you make your launch monitor decision.

Not all of these devices are compatible with the same software packages.

Do all of your friends have GSPro, and do you want to be able to compete against them in online tournaments? Then obviously you’re going to need to make sure your launch monitor is compatible with GSPro.

Do you like the idea of just being able to use your phone to connect to something like E6 Connect?

Or maybe you like the convenience of a little less-realistic simulator solution like Garmin’s Home Tee Hero or Rapsodo’s Courses feature, where you can play nearly simulator golf on more than 42,000 different courses.

Or maybe you don’t really care about playing simulator golf. But you want to make sure the native app that you use is going to provide a really enjoyable and useful practice experience.

All of these are important considerations. They really do play into how much you’re going to enjoy using the launch monitor you choose.

So make sure you do a little bit of research on the software options you’ll have with each device. That just might make the difference between loving or hating a golf launch monitor.

Not only is the Square the best optical launch monitor under $1,000, it’s also the best (and maybe the only) under $2,000 as well.

At $699 the new Square packs a ton of value in a very small package. It even comes with a separate swing stick that allows you to play even if you’re limited on ceiling height.

While its software is lacking some key features and the build quality is mediocre at best, the reality is that this device is going to be the right fit for a lot of more casual golfers looking to play sim golf as affordably as possible.

Best User Interface: SkyTrak+

Most of the devices in this list can provide great home simulator experiences.

But in my testing, the SkyTrak+ might provide the most enjoyable overall user experience if you’re building a home simulator.

For starters, while it has Doppler built in, the SkyTrak+ primarily uses cameras to track data. This means it sits next to the ball, rather than behind it – taking up much less space than the Mevo Plus or MLM2Pro.

The user-interace is also the most modern and enjoyable to use out of any of these devices as well.

Accuracy is close to the Bushnell Launch Pro, which is the most accurate device on the list.

And to top it off it comes with both a mobile and PC license for E6 Connect simulator software. And for a little bit more a year, you can use their native simulator – which is excellent.

The downsides are that you can’t use it on grass outdoors, and doesn’t feel quite as “pro” as the Mevo Plus or Bushnell. But if you want to set up a home simulator, have limited space, and want a device that simply works, and works well? The SkyTrak+ is an excellent choice.

The combination of Doppler radar and two cameras makes it the most accurate launch monitor in this price range. Not only does the built-in camera help track the ball for accuracy, but the second camera will record your impact at 240fps allowing you to see exactly what the ball and clubface are doing.

Rapsodo has improved the user-experience over the previous MLM in every way. It’s more fun, provides better results, and despite being more expensive – we’ve found it to truly be worth the upgrade.

It does a lot of the things that impressed us so much with the Garmin R10, but does them a little bit better, without having to pay too much of a premium to do it.

And after directly comparing distances to a Trackman? It’s surprisingly accurate.

Of all the launch monitors on this list, this definitely leans the most into “professional” territory. 

The Bushnell Launch Pro is built on the GC3 Platform, and performs identically to that. 

The Launch Pro uses a high-tech camera system rather than Doppler to give you data. This makes it one of the most accurate units of any launch monitor I’ve tested.

Even better, Bushnell has completely changed their pricing structure, and it’s now more affordable than ever before. You can get a ball-data enabled unit for right around $2k, and with that you get a free year of their Gold membership.

The downside? After that, it’s $500/year, and you’ll need to have it if you want to use any simulator features.

If you’re looking for a semi-permanent simulator setup, or you want a professional-level device that’s a little more budget-friendly? 

This is the launch monitor for you.

Just keep in mind, it’s not as easy to setup as some of the others, and if you want to use it as a simulator beyond just your iPad? You’ll need a gaming PC in order to do it.

Also worth noting, Bushnell is phasing this product out in favor of the new LPi. I’ve left it on this list for the time being because I think it represents a great value for a professional level device. I also don’t love the offering of the LPi, and think this will be a better and more versatile fit for most people.

It performs similarly in features and accuracy to the Launch Pro, but I’ve found its e-ink screen to be easier to read, and the fact it provides 10 metrics rather than the 6 on the Bushnell to be preferable.

When it comes to the sub-$500 launch monitor market the Mevo and the Rapsodo MLM are the two I hear about the most.

I give the edge to FlightScope for simplicity and accuracy.

But in terms of features? The Rapsodo is the winner.

And considering Rapsodo recently dropped the MSRP from $499 to $299? This becomes the no-brainer pick for entry-level launch monitor.

For one, it has lateral data, and will show you a shot tracer view of every ball you hit.

Just the lateral data alone may be enough for some people to choose it over the Mevo. It also has a robust social experience with games you can play against other Rapsodo users. 

I haven’t found the metrics to be quite as reliable as other devices, but it’s usually still in the right ballpark. It’s also nice that the design allows the phone to sit upright, so you can see the data easily.

To be clear, for around $500, the Garmin Approach R10 is fantastic. And when it came out in 2021, there was nothing under $1,000 that could touch it.

But now in 2025? We have the Rapsodo MLM2Pro which while slightly more expensive, gives better numbers. And we also have the Swing Caddie SC4, which has more features, and you can get for less than the R10.

But this doesn’t change the fact the R10 is great. This is especially true if you’re already in the Garmin eco-system and use the CT10 sensors or a Garmin golf watch.

If this is the case, I’d go with the R10 over the other two simply for the convenience of having all of your data in one place.

What is a Golf Launch Monitor?

First off, you may have stumbled upon this article and found yourself thinking “what the heck is a launch monitor?”

Simply put, a golf launch monitor is a Doppler radar or camera-based device that measures various metrics about your golf shots. This can include carry distance, swing speed, ball speed, spin rate, and many more.

You set the launch monitor behind or to the side of your ball on a range, garage, or simulator – and either in a compatible app or on the device itself, it gives you all of the info you could want to know about a golf swing.

What metrics a launch monitor provides, how accurate the data is, and what additional features the device has will vary wildly depending on the price point.

Are There Specific Features or Specs You Should Be Looking For?

Every single golfer is going to look for something slightly different in a launch monitor.

Are you a scratch golfer who is grinding to dial in his wedges down to the nearest yard? Then accuracy is going to be really important to you.

Are you a 15 handicap who gets bored on the range and you’re just looking for a way to make practice more enjoyable? You’re going to want a launch monitor that’s easy to use, and also has some fun bonus features.

Are you setting up a simulator in your garage for off-season play and practice? You’ll want to make sure it’s compatible with your simulator software of choice.

To make matters more complicated, prices for launch monitors run from $200 to $30,000 or more.

So before deciding which device you want, it’s really important to understand what you’re looking for, as well as what your budget is.

When considering a golf launch monitor here are some of the things you should be considering:

• Accuracy – How close do you really need the numbers to be? Within a yard every time? Or are you ok with numbers that are in the right ballpark?
• Portability – Are you setting your device up in the garage and then not touching it? Or will you be taking it out to the range on a regular basis?
• Price – What features do you need, and is it really worth the extra money to jump from a device in the $500 range to spending $2,000 or more? Also, take note of whether or not there is a recurring subscription fee to use the device.
• Ease of use – You want a device you’ll use, and if you’re someone who won’t use something that is less user-friendly, this is worth considering.
• Simulator Compatibility – Is your primary purpose to use this as a simulator? Make sure it’s compatible. If this is the case, check out our ultimate guide to building a golf simulator for home. • Fun – It sounds weird, but some launch monitors are simply more fun to use than others. Either through their user experience or extra features, this is one of my biggest considerations personally.

Something Everyone Should Know Before Buying Any of These Products

Having now spent dozens of hours testing launch monitors, and talking to hundreds of readers about their experiences with portable launch monitors, I wanted to add a quick disclaimer here.

When it comes to any launch monitor, much of its accuracy is going to come down to proper setup.

There are a lot of variables at play here:

• Lighting
• Indoors/Outdoors
• Where the device is positioned
• Weather
• And so on…

Spend some time to test and dial in your launch monitor. ALL of the devices here are capable of achieving great results relative to their price point. 

But in most cases, they also can give you pretty inaccurate results if they’re not set up properly.

For literally every single device on this list I’ve heard from multiple people that it’s “great and accurate enough for their needs,” or “it’s horribly inaccurate.”

Now, especially on the lower end, you can expect some more variable results. But in most cases, if things seem wildly off, it likely has something to do with your setup and environment. So just keep this in mind as you’re deciding whether or not a launch monitor is right for you or not.

The idea of a home golf simulator used to be the stuff of science fiction. Now, it’s becoming an increasingly common reality for more and more golfers.

Why?

First, it’s because today’s golf launch monitors are incredibly accurate and capable of producing shot data so good that it can be used to play very realistic simulator golf.

And second, it’s because the affordability of these products has gotten to the point where you now have multiple options for legitimately great golf launch monitors that start at less than $1,000.

That wasn’t true even just four years ago.

So, if you’re like most golfers, you’ve probably started to dream about your own simulator setup.

But if you have, you may have become overwhelmed by all of the variables involved. There are a lot of questions that go into it. Things like:

• How much space do I need?
• How much do I need to spend on a golf launch monitor?
• What kind of enclosure or hitting bay do I need?
• Do I need a projector?
• What kind of screen do I need?
• What kind of hitting mat do I need?
• Do I need a dedicated computer for my golf simulator setup?
• How hard is it to set up a golf simulator?
• How much will all of this cost?

It’s a lot to consider. And if you start poking around the internet, you’re likely to confuse yourself even further.

But I’m going to show you that there’s a turnkey solution that addresses just about everything and takes all of the guesswork out of planning your dream simulator setup.

That’s what we’re breaking down today. I’m going to show you how you can get almost everything you need for a home golf simulator with just one click. And I’m even going to give you my recommendations for best golf simulator setups by price. I’ll also discuss what’s not included in these turnkey solutions.

Before we go any further, the main thing I want to impress upon you is this: You can have a golf simulator in your home. All you need is the budget and the space.

I know that it may seem like there’s a ton that goes into this. But that’s the beauty of this post. I’m going to show you how you can do all of this without pulling your hair out in frustration and confusion. And I’m going to give you options for all kinds of budgets.

What Is A Golf Simulator?

As you likely already know or assume, a golf simulator is a setup that allows you to simulate an actual round of golf.

You use real clubs to hit real golf balls.

You can even play on simulated versions of real golf courses that include all of the yardages, hazards, green undulations, and elevation changes of the real-life location. You can hit shots on a variety of virtual driving ranges or play different games and challenges and even compete online with other sim golfers.

Let’s walk through the core components that make up a golf simulator.

What Do I Need for a Golf Simulator Studio?

The main component of a golf simulator is a golf launch monitor. This is the device that reads the golf shots to capture data like how far the ball carried and rolled out and in which direction it was traveling and curving. Different golf launch monitors are capable of recording different data metrics, and some are more accurate than others. Think of the golf launch monitor as the brains of your simulator setup.

Then you have your simulator software. This works in tandem with the golf launch monitor. In essence, the golf launch monitor talks to the simulator software, telling it everything it knows about the golf shot that you just hit. The software then interprets that data and overlays it onto a simulated image of whatever environment you’re playing in.

Say you are playing a simulated version of Pebble Beach’s iconic Par 3 number 7. You would hit your approximately 100-yard tee shot, and the golf launch monitor would read your swing and contact to determine where the ball was headed. With that information, the simulator software would show your ball flying through the air towards the Pacific Ocean and (hopefully) landing on the green before rolling out towards the hole.

In order to run your simulator software, you of course need some kind of computer. Some golf launch monitors and sim software packages work with mobile devices like a phone or tablet. Others require a more robust computer with a powerful processor.

Remember when I said that the turnkey solutions I’m going to share include almost everything you need to achieve a simulator setup? Well, the one main thing that’s missing from these packages is the computer.

You may already own a computer that will work for your simulator setup. Or you may choose a golf launch monitor and software package that works perfectly fine with the cell phone you’re already using. Some software is going to require the horsepower of a dedicated gaming computer.

For these reasons, we’re going to stay away from recommending any specific computers in this post. Once you choose your sim studio package, you’ll get a better understanding of what you need for a computer.

But for what it’s worth, I personally use: 

• Acer Predator Helios 300
• 16GB Ram
• 1TB SSD.
• Intel Core i7
• GeForce RTX 3070

This is the model I have, with a little bit more RAM – and is a pretty good deal for around $1k.

So we’ve talked about the golf launch monitor, the simulator software, and the computer. Now, if you want a dream simulator setup that allows you to watch your golf shots flying in front of you just like out on the actual golf course, you’ll need a projector and a screen. Your computer and software will send a signal to the projector. And it will in turn cast an image of your simulated experience onto the same surface into which you’re hitting the golf ball. Both the projector and screen are included in the packages I’ll recommend.

Then you’re going to need some kind of enclosure to corral the golf ball after it hits the screen and to protect your surroundings from wayward shots. All of that is also included in the below turnkey simulator packages.

And of course, you’re going to need a hitting mat off of which you’ll hit your shots. You guessed it. That’s also included.

You also have the more affordable option of building a sim studio without a projector, impact screen or enclosure. You could instead pair a golf launch monitor with a hitting net. You won’t see the ball flying in front of you for the ultimate realistic simulator golf experience, but you can instead watch that action on a computer, tablet, or phone set to the side. If you go this route, you’ve got the chance to play simulator golf at home for just $1,000.

How Much Space Do I Need for an Indoor Golf Simulator Setup?

To hit golf shots indoors with complete comfort and confidence and to be able to accommodate both left- and right-handed golfers as well as tall golfers all with one setup, we recommend a space that is at least:

• 10 feet high
• 15 feet wide (if you’re playing with both righties and lefties)
• 16 feet deep (camera-based golf launch monitor requires less room)

Now, you certainly can get away with less room than this. Camera-based golf launch monitors, for example, sit next to the golfer rather than behind them the way that radar-based units do. That means that if you choose a camera-based device like the SkyTrak+, you don’t need a full 16 feet of room depth.

Then there’s the matter of golfer height and swing plane. A tall golfer with a steep swing is going to need higher ceilings than a shorter golfer with a shallower swing. A lot of golfers have put together successful indoor simulator setups with 9-foot-or-even-shorter ceilings. It really depends on your situation.

Just be careful not to put a hole in your ceiling – I speak from experience here.

Those space recommendations are by no means set in stone. Depending on your individual variables and which package you choose, you may very well be able to have a perfectly functional simulator setup with considerably less space.

So I told you how incredible a golf launch monitor the Bushnell Launch Pro is.

But you know what I didn’t mention? If you want to play simulator golf with a Launch Pro, you’re going to have to pay a $499 annual subscription.

The way around that subscription cost is with the Foresight Sports GC3, which is the exact same launch monitor as the Bushnell Launch Pro. I know it’s confusing. Read this if you want the details.

The key difference is that the Foresight Sports GC3 is a one-time purchase. No keeping track of and continually paying subscriptions. You get everything you could want right out of the box.

Like the Launch Pro, the GC3 is also available as a Ball Only model or Ball and Club Data model.

Now I know I mentioned that the Ball and Club Data model gives you as much information as you could want, and it’s true. But for some people, that extra club data is overkill.

Why?

Because it’s the most accurate launch monitor I own.

But as most people know, the Bushnell Launch Pro is simply a rebranded Foresight GC3 unit.

Up until recently, I’d never used a GC3, so I couldn’t accurately tell you if one was better than the other.

But now that I’ve got my hands on a GC3 and have put it through its paces, I’ve got lots of thoughts.

In this Foresight GC3 review I’m going to cover everything you could want to know about this device:

• How accurate is the GC3?
• How is the user experience?
• What are the differences between the GC3 and Launch Pro?
• Should you buy the GC3, Launch Pro, or something else entirely?

We’re going to cover all of these questions and more.

Keep in mind this review is a little unique. Because most people considering a GC3 are also likely considering a Launch Pro (they’re the same), I’m going to spend some extra time comparing the two directly so that you understand all the pros and cons between both of them, so you can make sure you make the best decision for yourself.

January 2025 Update: All New Devices

Before we jump into the full review, I wanted to make sure you knew that Foresight has changed their lineup as of January 2025.

The good news is that this device the GC3 is still for sale, and largely unchanged. In fact, now if you buy the GC3, you’re getting a Bushnell Pro X3 Link rangefinder to go along with it. This is actually a nice upgrade, and makes the GC3 even more appealing!

On the lower end, however they’ve rolled out a new product called the GC3s. It’s essentially the exact same device, it just has a $500/year subscription instead of all in pricing.

And on the lower end, they’ve gotten rid of the Bushnell Launch Pro in favor of a fairly stripped down replacement, the Bushnell LPi.

I’ll have reviews of all these devices in the coming months, but in the meantime  here is where you can find all the details about the Foresight changes.

First Impressions of the Foresight GC3 Launch Monitor

One thing that I noticed when unpacking and doing my initial review of the Bushnell Launch Pro is the fact that the branding feels a little muddled.

It’s a Foresight product, branded as Bushnell product.

But you’re still using Foresight software.

The two brand names going back and forth was always a little confusing to me.

So it’s been nice in my initial unboxing and setup of the GC3 to have one product with a consistent brand, voice etc.

The Foresight GC3 is packaged like a high-end product, and it feels every bit of its starting price of $5,999 when you open it up.

From the extra padding in the shipping packaging to the high-quality box it comes in – everything about it is well done.

If you’re used to more consumer-level launch monitors like the MLM2Pro, Approach R10, or even the Mevo Plus – this thing is a shock to the system.

It’s bigger, heavier, and feels more expensive than all those – which is obviously true for the Launch Pro as well, since they’re well, the same.

While not “throw it in your bag” portable, the design is very well thought-out with an integrated handle on top of it.

In the box, you’ll find:

• Foresight GC3 Unit
• Power brick and cord
• USB-C cord for attaching to a laptop
• Warranty/registration card and quick start book.
• Alignment stick

While the alignment stick is useful for the GC3 alignment mode, it’s also a subtle affirmation that this is a device meant for people serious about improving their game.

Setting Up the Foresight GC3

I’m not gonna lie, I was kind of dreading the initial setup of the GC3.

My setup experience with the Launch Pro was less than ideal, and I was bracing for the worst with the GC3.

My fears were unfounded however, as the GC3 setup was about as smooth as any launch monitor setup I’ve had.

Once you turn it on, you’ll connect it to your WiFi network.

From there, it will display a QR code, which you’ll scan to setup or login to your Foresight Account.

Within seconds the GC3 unit was added to my account, and it showed that the device was Unlocked and that I should have full access to FSX Play, FSX Pro, and FSX 2020.

We’ll talk more about all of that in just a minute.

You’ll need to input your activation code the first time you launch any of those pieces of software, but once you do, you’re good to go.

When the GC3 is connected to the same network as my computer, it instantly recognizes it and the connection with the Foresight apps is seamless. Alternatively, connecting via USB also provided immediate recognition. 

This experience was so seamless compared to the Launch Pro.

Why was it so different?

I think it’s the difference between having a device that’s fully unlocked from the beginning vs. one that has a subscription.

Not only that, with the Launch Pro subscription there previously were different tiers (there’s just one now), and there’s a trial.

It’s extra complexity, and I’ve continued to have issues getting my Launch Pro to accurately recognize my current subscription status. Again, we’ll talk more about that below, but suffice it to say, I’m super impressed with the GC3 setup process.

Using the Foresight GC3 on It’s Own

One of the great things about the GC3 when compared to many other launch monitor options is the fact it’s got a built-in screen.

I love this.

It adds so much versatility to how you use it.

It allows you to bust it out an hour before a round on the range without the hassle of pairing it to a computer or mobile device.

Just look at how many pros have GCQuad units out on the range during tournaments.

Same goes if you just want to hit into a net in your garage or backyard.

But if you want to go all out and turn it into a world-class simulator option, you can do that too.

But how does it work in real life?

Overall, using the GC3 on its own works well – with a couple of annoyances.

Unlike other Doppler-based devices where you place the unit 6-8 feet behind the ball, you place this 2 feet in front of it.

This is so nice. 

It doesn’t take up as much space, it makes alignment and setup easier, and it allows you to see the screen directly in front of you.

The GC3 will ask you to place the ball in the hitting area.

The area is generally pretty large, with the sweet spot being about 2 feet away and at 6-8 inches behind the cameras. 

When you drop a ball you’ll see a dot on the screen representing where the ball is within (or outside of) the hitting area.

Once it sees the ball in the zone, it will say “Ready” and you’re free to hit.

The GC3 is very fast and gives you your data in less than 2 seconds after hitting.

By default the metrics that it shows on its first screen are:

• Ball Speed
• Launch Angle
• Total Spin
• Side Spin
• Spin Axis
• Carry Distance

Its directly measured spin data is one of the major things that set it apart from the cheaper consumer-level launch monitors.

But here is where I have one of my biggest critiques of the GC3 (which is the same on the Bushnell Launch Pro).

After the shot data is displayed, it very quickly goes back to the hitting zone screen and stops displaying the data.

More often than not, the display changes before I’m ready for it to. This causes me to have to go down to the unit and swipe to get back to the main metrics screen.

I’ve also found that it will often cycle to the club data screen as well, and if you don’t have a package that includes club data, then it will just show blank numbers.

You can turn this off in settings, but it’s something to be aware of.

It’s a relatively minor critique, but after hours using both the GC3 and Launch Pro, it’s something that’s been a continued frustration.

That said, if you’re using any of the Foresight software options, then this is less of an issue as you can simply look at the screen.

FSX Pro vs. FSX 2020 vs. FSX Play

Chances are, if you’re dropping at minimum $6k on a launch monitor, you’re planning to use your GC3 to setup your a golf simulator (unless you’re a golf pro…)

So what are your options for doing so?

With the unlocked  Foresight GC3 you get access to three different pieces of Foresight software plus a lifetime account to Awesome Golf.

• FSX Pro – This is the Foresight mobile app. It will allow you to record and track all of your metrics on an iPad or phone, but does not come with any simulator access.
• FSX 2020 – This is the previous generation simulator software for Foresight. It allows you to play real-life courses, and do other games and challenges
• FSX Play – This is the newest simulator offering from Foresight. The graphics are significantly improved over FSX 2020, but is a little bit more limited in some of its modes and features.
• Awesome Golf – Well-regarded 3rd party simulator software that doesn’t have anywhere near the graphics of Foresight or GSPro, but makes up for it with some incredibly fun game modes.

Unlike many other less expensive launch monitors, neither the GC3 nor Launch Pro comes with any mobile simulator access. 

So you won’t be able to get free e6 Connect access on your iPad like you can with the SkyTrak+, Mevo Plus, MLM2Pro and others.

In order to use the GC3 as a simulator you’re going to need a dedicated gaming PC in order to run either FSX 2020 or FSX Play.

This is a little bit of a bummer, but again if you’re serious about setting up a simulator, a PC is going to provide a vastly improved experience over anything iOS.

Getting Data on Mobile Using FSX Pro

There’s definitely something to the name “FSX Pro” as this does feel like a “professional level” launch monitor data program.

However, this comes at the expense of usability for the average person.

There’s a little bit of a learning curve with FSX Pro, and if you’re not used to using a launch monitor, you could find yourself a little overwhelmed with the user interface.

Personally, I’ve found the FlightScope Mevo Plus and the SkyTrak + mobile software to be more user-friendly and enjoyable to use. 

But with more time and familiarity the FSX Pro app should give you all of the data you could ever want about your shots and your swing.

Using the Foresight GC3 as a Golf Simulator Using FSX Play

As I alluded to above, if I’m using a mobile device for my tracking, I prefer the software of some other launch monitors.

However, when it comes to golf simulator software the Foresight GC3 blows away any other launch monitor I’ve used.

I’ve primarily used e6 Connect with the SkyTrak+ and Mevo Plus, which is…good. But I’ve never been blown away by e6.

A big reason for this is I’ve primarily used mobile versions of it. Now that I have a proper PC, I’m excited to dig in more and see what it can really do.

But, now having played a couple rounds with the new FSX Play app? I’m wildly impressed.

When you load up FSX Play the user-interface is fantastic. Everything is very clear and easy to use, whether you want to head to Paris for some driving range practice, or you want to play a full simulated round.

The courses that are included with the basic FSX Play package are pretty solid.

That said, there’s a significant number of courses available to purchase individually.

These are generally $150 each, which is steep. 

But after playing Pebble Beach within the app? It’s worth spending $150 on it.

Seriously if you’re in the depths of Winter at home, to have a few of your buddies over to play Pebble when it looks this good? Worth it.

The app experience is both the most user-friendly and most beautiful golf simulator setup I’ve used in a consumer-level system.

It’s very easy to change your clubs and get all of your metrics while you’re playing. You can easily choose your playing conditions, and select specific holes if you’re not looking to play a full round.

There’s even a drop feature to allow you to more accurately take drops after pumping one OB. Pebble #6, I’m looking at you…

I have a laptop gaming PC running it, and here are my specs:

• Acer Predator Helios 300
• 16GB Ram
• 1TB SSD.
• Intel Core i7
• GeForce RTX 3070

This is the model I have, with a little bit more RAM.

The quality even in “Medium” graphics mode is fantastic. It looks noticeably better in “Ultra” mode, but not drastically so.

In Ultra, it generally runs well with only a little slow down and dropped frames when it was doing hole flyovers. But otherwise, it runs very smoothly.

How Does the GC3 Data Compare to the Launch Pro?

The Launch Pro and GC3 are essentially the exact same hardware, but I’d never tested them side by side until now.

Over the years after testing over a dozen launch monitors, I’ve found results to vary pretty wildly from one system to another depending on all kinds of environmental and product factors.

So when putting the GC3 and Launch Pro side by side, I was preparing myself to have the numbers be a little off from each other.

Nope.

The metrics GC3 and Launch Pro were extremely close to one another on just about every shot, as you can see here:

I have found (and another reader doing similar testing verified this) that the Launch Pro consistently has ball speeds give or take 1 mph faster than the GC3. It’s a minor difference that won’t have a major effect on most people, but is worth noting.

So if you’re thinking about buying one over the other and are questioning whether or not one is better or more accurate? Don’t. For all practical purposes, in my experience, the data is the same.

Note: I have heard that a limited number of GC3 units have a roll/pitch bug that they’re working on, which can cause the numbers to deviate slightly from Launch Pro. But I haven’t had this issue at all.

The GC3 is the exact same as the Bushnell Launch Pro. Meaning its among the most accurate launch monitors you can get under $10k. Whether you get Bushnell or Foresight just comes down to how you want to pay for it.

Differences Between Foresight GC3 Packages

While Bushnell has been changing their pricing and membership tiers on the Launch Pro every few months for 2 years, up until recently, the Foresight GC3 had always been pretty straightforward.

It was $7,499, unlocked, and it included lifetime access to all of the FSX software.

However, they’ve recently made a few small changes that make getting into the GC3 a little more accessible.

Now there are two options for buying the Foresight GC3: Ball Only and Ball and Club Data.

It’s exactly how it sounds.

The Ball Only GC3 is now available for $5,999 and comes unlocked with all the stuff we’ve mentioned.ee

The Ball and Club Data is $7,499 and it includes all of the club data metrics, including:

• Clubhead Speed
• Smash Factor
• Angle of Attack
• Club Path

This model is exactly the same as the full-price GC3 has been for the past year or two.

Some people will be annoyed that you have to pay a $1,500 upgrade to get club data when the hardware is the same unit.

Those people are wrong.

This is the same price it’s always been, except now there’s a less expensive entry point for people who don’t need the Club data package.

As I’ve talked about with the Mevo Plus, I’m a fan of ala carte pricing if it gives people the ability to get into a product for less money, and upgrade down the line as desired.

Should You Buy the GC3 or Launch Pro?

If you’ve narrowed down your buying decision between the GC3 and Launch Pro, then awesome – you’ve done a lot of the hard work.

But we’re not out of the woods yet, because now is where things get a little tricky.

The only significant difference between the Launch Pro and GC3 is how the pricing works.

The Foresight GC3 is a flat fee whereas the Bushnell Launch Pro has a subscription model.

The cheapest GC3 is the “Ball Only” configuration which doesn’t include any clubhead data, and it costs $5,999.

Bushnell has been constantly changing their pricing, but as it sits right now, you can get the “Ball Only” Launch Pro for $1,999.

That’s a significant difference.

Where Bushnell gets you is that for a FSX 2020/FSX Play license, you’ll need to pony up $499/year for their Gold Subscription for access.

That’s a huge subscription fee, but you can buy the Launch Pro and get eight years of the Gold package before the cost lines up equally to the Launch Pro.

As I mentioned in my Launch Pro Review, I’m a fan of the “season pass” mentality. In that I’d rather pay once and not think about it again, than keep paying on a regular basis.

So I love the idea of going with the GC3 for that reason, as well as the easier setup process.

But when you can get in for so much less than the GC3, it’s more difficult to recommend going the Foresight route.

If you take that extra $3,500 you’ll save up front and invest it with an 8% return over 8 years, you’ll have made nearly $3k in interest – or close to enough to pay the difference.

There is a “but” here though…

Using 3rd Party Software with the Launch Pro or GC3

There’s one aspect of all these pricing changes that have a lot of Launch Pro users upset.

And that is that now in order to use any third-party software, you have to pay for the Gold Package at $499/year.

So if you only use say, GSPro, you’re going to have to pay $499/year for the Gold Package, plus the additional $250/year for GSPro.

That gets to be a hefty annual fee.

So if you’re trying to minimize such substantial annual payments and maybe you can find a way to write off the GC3 on your taxes (what, you’re not a golf blogger??), then this is one area where the Foresight GC3 may make more financial sense.

GC3 vs. Mevo Plus vs. SkyTrak+

I’ve spent a ton of time talking about the GC3 vs Launch Pro.

But the other comparison many people will be making is whether or not to go the Foresight route at all, and instead go with the SkyTrak Plus or Mevo Plus.

Both of those units are excellent as well, and it depends on your needs.

The reality is, when comparing the GC3 to these, they are in different categories price-wise.

During one of the frequent FlightScope sales you can get a Mevo Plus, with Pro Package and Impact Detection for about $3k – and there are no subscription fees.

It’s accurate, portable, and about half the price of the Ball Only GC3.

The SkyTrak Plus is also half the price of the Ball Only GC3, has a more consumer-friendly mobile experience, and very reasonable subscription fees.

The Foresight GC3 however has what I think is by far the best simulator experience with FSX Play, has the built-in screen, and is a little bit more accurate than either of these units.

The GC3 is really a professional level device, and the other Skytrak+ and Mevo+, while fantastic, feel slightly more “Prosumer”

Final Thoughts on the Foresight GC3 Launch Monitor

Simply put, the Foresight GC3 is a phenomenal launch monitor. It’s among the best on the market, and the recently upgraded FSX Play software makes simulator rounds a blast to play.

Granted, you’ll likely have to pony up $150/course to play the courses you really want, but in the case of some bucket list courses, it’s worth the expense.

If all things were equal, I’d buy the GC3 over the Launch Pro.

The problem is, all things aren’t equal.

The cost disparity between the unlocked GC3 and the Launch Pro’s new lower “Gold” tier price of $499 is just a bit too wide.

If it were say a $2,000 difference, I’d probably say just go for the GC3 and avoid the subscriptions. But as it sits, that’s a tough pill to swallow.

That said, if you’re using the GC3 in a professional setting, are able to write off the full cost of it, or just hate subscriptions and want to pay one price and be done – then you won’t be disappointed with this unit.

I whole-heartedly recommend the Foresight GC3 and have had a fantastic experience with it.

It was accurate, had a great feature set, and frankly, I personally preferred using it more than the more popular Bushnell Launch Pro.

So when they announced at the 2024 PGA Show that they were releasing the Eye Mini Lite, I got really excited.

The concept? Take the same tracking system as the Eye Mini, but remove the built-in screen and a few of the extra features – and then sell it for a much more affordable price.

I’ve finally got my hands on a device, and have been able to put it through its paces.

The consensus? It’s very good. Like, very, very good.

But it’s only for a person looking for a very specific thing.

What is that? Let’s find out in this full Uneekor Eye Mini Lite Review.

First Impressions of the Uneekor Eye Mini Lite

The original Eye Mini is a show-stopper right out of the box. It comes with the beefiest and best-looking carrying case of any launch monitor I’ve tested.

The Eye Mini Lite doesn’t quite have that same panache in terms of case and packaging. But fortunately, the unit itself looks fantastic.

It’s built like a tank with matte black metal construction, and I think it’s one of the best looking launch monitors out there.

The design has the dual cameras recessed, which makes me less concerned about a shanked ball ruining my unit.

In my testing I had more than one ball bounce off the screen and hit the device – not even a scratch.

The term “Lite” in the name is a bit of a misnomer because this device is still pretty beefy and fairly heavy.

This generally is a good thing, because this isn’t what should be described as “portable” launch monitor.

And this is one of the reasons why I mention it’s great for a very specific person.

Unlike the Eye Mini, Launch Pro, Mevo+ or many other units – this isn’t a device you’ll be moving from your home simulator to the range, to the backyard, and so on.

This is meant to be a dedicated indoor launch monitor.

As such it only runs off a gaming PC, there’s no ability to get data from your phone or iPad, there’s no wireless connectivity, and it needs to be plugged into power at all times.

But overall, the unit itself looks great, feels great, and is very clearly well-built.

What’s in the Box?

Upon opening the box you’ll find:

• Uneekor Eye Mini Lite Device
• Ethernet cord
• Power Brick
• Club stickers
• Setup Card

Noticeably absent is any form of carrying case.

Now, considering this isn’t meant to be a portable unit, and the fact that it’s significantly less expensive than the original Eye Mini – this shouldn’t be a huge surprise. 

But it’s still a $2,700+ product – so it would have been nice to see some sort of case.

Worth noting, however, is that its main optical competitors at this price the SkyTrak+ and Bushnell Launch Pro (soon to be Bushnell LPi), also don’t come with any kind of case.

Setting Up the Uneekor Eye Mini Lite

In my experience, setting up Uneekor devices is always a little bit more technical than with other brands.

I had a few hiccups getting my PC to recognize my Uneekor Eye Mini when I was testing it – but once I toggled the right setting, it was great.

Unfortunately, with the Eye Mini Lite, I ran into some similar issues – but even after 2-3 hours of fiddling and following the (excellent) support person’s advice, nothing seemed to work.

This led to me tabling the unit. It sat in my office for 3 months while I worked on other projects.

I finally came back around to the Eye Mini Lite a few weeks ago to see if some recent software updates changed anything.

Fortunately, they did.

After updating the Uneekor Launcher and View software on my PC, it immediately recognized my device, and I was off to the races.

I’m not sure what caused my initial issues, but my guess, is you won’t have this problem. I’ve also spoken with 2 other people who have Eye Mini Lites, and they didn’t have any of the setup issues I had.

That said, even when it works perfectly, the launcher and settings just feel a bit more technical than other units.

When you compare it to say the SkyTrak+ or Mevo+, it’s just more involved. In part because you don’t have the luxury of using it with an iPad – which always greatly simplifies setup.

When you plug in the Eye Mini Lite, the logo lights up different colors depending on where you are in the process. It’s a cool effect, and definitely makes the device feel even more high-end.

Using the View Software

I find myself struggling to remind myself that this is not meant to be a portable unit.

So a lot of the comparisons I want to make to say the SkyTrak+ or the outgoing Launch Pro – aren’t really fair.

The thing I keep coming back to is how much I’d like the ability to use the View iPad software with the Eye Mini Lite.

But you can’t, and realistically the buyer for this won’t want it or need it – because this is meant to be the brains behind a dedicated simulator.

Not a “do it all” launch monitor.

Ok, I’m done with that rant on lack of mobility – now onto some good news.

The View PC software is excellent.

This is truly a professional-level piece of software that will let you control and customize just about everything you could want.

It will take you a session or two, to get familiar with all your options, but once you do? It performs wonderfully.

Want to group shots? Easy. 

Want to tag clubs so that you can see which one performs best for you? Done.

Prefer an “at-the-range” shot tracer? It’s great.

Want to see club metrics after every shot? Oh, and you want a slow-motion impact replay as well?

You can do that too.

I love how configurable the primary screens are. So regardless of what data you want to see, there’s a way to set it up to your liking.

There are a variety of AI tools that will use a combination of cameras and data to analyze your swing in depth. I didn’t have all the necessary components required to test this, but it definitely looks impressive.

How Accurate is the Uneekor Eye Mini Lite?

This is one area where the Eye Mini Lite really shines. Across the board, accuracy was very impressive.

The logo lights up green when it’s ready to hit, and while the hitting area isn’t huge, I never had any issues getting it to find the ball easily.

In my testing, I didn’t have any missed shots by the device.

In order to get accurate club data, as with most other devices in this price range – you’ll need stickers on your club in order to get accurate club data.

I did have the occasional shot where the unit didn’t pick up club data, despite having stickers on the clubs.

It wasn’t frequent, but it happened enough to warrant a mention.

When setup next to a Trackman unit, the numbers really surprised me.

The Eye Mini Lite held it’s own next to the Trackman which costs over 10 times as much.

Spin numbers were almost always within 200 rpms, and most of the time under 100rpms different.

Ball speed and club speed numbers were all within 1mph of each other.

And carry distances never varied more than 3 yards with irons and wedges – and usually were less than 2 yards apart.

Variance with the driver picked up a little bit, but still was rarely more than 3-5 yards off.

Total distances were definitely further apart, but this shouldn’t be a concern. Every launch monitor uses different algorithms and calculations for total distance, so it’s not surprising to see them vary significantly.

The bottom line is that I don’t believe accuracy should be a major concern if you’re thinking about buying this unit.

Using the Uneekor Eye Mini Lite as a Simulator

Considering the Eye Mini Lite was designed solely to be the brains behind your simulator, you’d expect it to work really well.

And the good news is that it does!

Just as with the View software, when using the device as a simulator it’s rock solid.

It’s compatible with a ton of third party options like GSPro, E6 Connect, Awesome Golf, The Golf Club 2019 – and more.

There are two downsides here though.

The first, is that if you want to use any of that third-party software, you’ll need at least the “Pro” Uneekor subscription, which is $199/year.

Not the most egregious subscription in the world, especially when you compare it to Foresight’s $500/year. But if you want to use GSpro, you’ll have to pay for this, and then the $250/year GSPro subscription on top of that.

The second downside to the Eye Mini Lite as a simulator is that their first-party “Refine” simulator software isn’t as good as competing products.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not bad. 

But the graphics are just middle of the road, and more importantly, it has very few courses that you’d actually want to play.

The silver lining is that it does look like they’re going to be releasing something called “GameDay” soon. This would appear to be higher-end sim software. So hopefully it is, and it can compete with the likes of FSX Play – which I think is best in class in terms of graphics, courses, and experience.

What is the Uneekor Subscription?

As you now know, in order to get the most out of your Eye Mini Lite, you’ll likely need to get one of their subscription packages.

The good news is that without the subscription, you still get access to the PC version of their View software.

So without any additional money each year, you get a fantastic launch monitor and practice tool with lots of accurate data points. Considering you don’t get any app access with Foresight/Bushnell, this alone is a big deal.

But if you want access to any simulator golf, you’ll need the $199 Pro Package.

This package gives you 5 user profiles instead of the standard 1.  So if you have more than one golfer in your household, you’ll want to pick this up.

Fortunately, I think the sweet spot is that Pro package.

There’s a $399/year “Champions” package, that really only gets you more users, and some extra Refine simulator courses. I think this package is best for those using the Eye Mini Lite in a more commercial or higher-use environment (as you get 50 profiles), and 20 courses vs. the 5 you get with Pro.

But if it were me, I’d skip Refine completely and opt for GSPro.

Uneekor Eye Mini Lite vs. Bushnell LPi

With Bushnell just recently announcing the release of the LPi Launch Monitor, it’s very clear they’re going directly after the Eye Mini Lite.

They both share all the same highlights:

• Indoor only device
• A stripped-down version of a more expensive launch monitor
• No screen
• Annual subscription

This is going to be a tricky decision for a lot of people.

The Eye Mini Lite is $50 less at $2,749 vs. $2,799. For practice, it doesn’t require a subscription.

And if you want GSpro, it’s $300/year cheaper than the comparable Bushnell product.

But if you want first-party simulator access, FSX Play is light years better than Refine, and I prefer it to GSPro.

And while it doesn’t come with a Bushnell Pro X3 Link like the more expensive GC3s, you’d assume it would have that technology built in if you want to buy the rangefinder separately.

So, it’s a tough call.

On the surface, I think the Uneekor is probably the better deal if comparing apples to apples, but it really comes down to what you’re looking for.

Final Thoughts on the Uneekor Eye Mini Lite

Once I got it working with my PC, the Uneekor Eye Mini Lite really impressed me.

It’s easy to get lost in what it doesn’t have when compared to many launch monitors out there:

• No screen
• No wireless connectivity
• No mobile/iPad software access
• Not able to use it outside

But if you’re building a simulator at home, there’s a good chance none of that stuff really matters anyway.

And when you’ve got it set up? It’s super accurate, fast, reliable, and the subscription isn’t nearly as egregious as its main competitor in Bushnell.

Keep in mind that your all-in cost is going to be significantly higher than the $2,749 price point. You’re going to need a gaming PC, indoor hitting mat, a net or screen – and likely a TV or projector.

So it’s pretty safe to plan for a proper build using the Eye Mini Lite to be double the cost of the unit itself. 

But if you know what you’re getting into, this is absolutely one of the best golf simulators on the market, and it comes at a very reasonable price for what you get.

What is this, you wonder, and how is it different from these other identical-looking launch monitors?

The whole thing becomes confusing as hell.

So what are each of these devices and how do they compare to each other?

And more importantly, which one, if any, is right for you?

January 2025 Update: All New Devices

Before we jump into this comparison, I wanted to make sure you knew that Foresight has changed their lineup as of January 2025.

The good news is that the GC3 is still for sale, and largely unchanged. In fact, now if you buy the GC3, you’re getting a Bushnell Pro X3 Link rangefinder to go along with it. This is actually a nice upgrade, and makes the GC3 even more appealing.

Last year, the GCQuad also got an upgrade in the form of the GCQuad Max.

On the lower end, Foresight has just rolled out a new product called the GC3s. It’s essentially the exact same device as the GC3, but it has a $500/year subscription instead of all-in pricing.

It does come with a new Bushnell rangefinder, however.

And on the lower end, they’ve gotten rid of the Bushnell Launch Pro in favor of a fairly stripped-down replacement, the Bushnell LPi.

I’ll have reviews of all these devices in the coming months, but in the meantime  here is where you can find all the details the new Foresight GC3s and Bushnell LPi.

So while all of the comparisons in this post are true, some of these products are changing or being discontinued.

Foresight GC3 vs. Bushnell Launch Pro: What are the Differences?

OK, let’s put the GCQuad on the back burner for a minute. We’ll get to that below.

First, we’ve got to unravel this tangled mess of confusion between the Foresight Sports GC3 and the Bushnell Launch Pro. Obviously the whole GC3 vs. Launch Pro thing raises questions.

Are you ready for this? The Bushnell Launch Pro and Foresight Sports GC3 are the exact same thing.

Same exact device. Except the GC3 is marked “Foresight Sports” while the Launch Pro says “Bushnell Golf/Foresight Sports.”

Both the GC3 and Launch Pro also have the exact same performance.

Each of these units are capable of the same launch monitor data and the same simulator features. Each uses a series of three precision cameras to track your ball and club data. Each unit sits to the side of your golf ball, rather than measuring from behind like some other launch monitors, meaning that both units offer space-saving potential for indoor use. Each unit can accurately track putting when used as a simulator, which not every golf launch monitor can do.

And both the Launch Pro and GC3 are exactly the same in terms of awesomeness.

Seriously, each of these products is generally regarded as among the very best and most accurate golf launch monitors available. I can confirm that with firsthand experience. I’ve tested a whole bunch of launch monitors, and my Bushnell Launch Pro is unquestionably the most accurate device that I own.

But we still haven’t answered the question. If the GC3 and Launch Pro look the same and do the same things, then what’s the point of having two identical products?

It all has to do with the pricing models and the features that each price tier unlocks. That is literally the only difference. And yet it still gets a little confusing. Try to stay with us, and then we’ll tie it all together at the end with a recommendation for which launch monitor might be right for you.

Bushnell Launch Pro Pricing

The Bushnell Launch Pro costs $3,499.99. Out of the box, you get the following ball data metrics:

• Carry distance
• Ball speed
• Launch angle
• Side angle
• Total spin
• Back spin
• Side spin
• Spin axis

But the data you receive is for a single shot, presented on the unit’s LCD screen with no storage options.

To unlock more features, you’ve got to pony up more for higher subscription levels. Your first year after purchase comes with a free Basic software subscription. After that, it costs $249 annually. The Basic package not only allows data storage but also provides additional metrics, including:

• Total distance
• Clubhead speed
• Smash factor
• Club path
• Angle of attack
• Descent angle
• Peak height
• Offline distance
• Barometer adjustment

To use your Launch Pro as a golf simulator, you’ll need to spring for the Gold subscription plan.

At $699 per year, the Gold package gives you everything the Basic subscription can do plus 3D ball flight, up to 10 saved sessions and videos and 10 different simulator courses for up to eight players. Here are the simulator courses included with the Launch Pro Gold subscription:

So, when it comes to the Foresight GC3 vs. Launch Pro we know that they’re the same. The only difference, other than the branding on the device itself, is the price tiers. Just like with the Launch Pro, you’ve got three options with the GC3.

First up, for a one-time $5,999 purchase price, is the GC3 Ball Enabled Bundle. With this option, you get only ball data, meaning none of the club data like smash factor, clubhead speed, etc. In other words, the GC3 Ball Enabled Bundle gives you the same data as what you get out of the box with the Launch Pro. However, with the GC3, you also get the following simulator software:

• FSX Play
• FSX 2020
• FSX Pro
• 10 golf courses (the same ones included with the Launch Pro Gold subscription)

Bushnell vs. Foresight

You might be wondering how it ever got to the point that we have two identical products (except for their pricing structures) with two different manufacturer names. Well, in 2021, Bushnell’s parent company, Vista Outdoor, purchased Foresight Sports in a blockbuster, headline-grabbing acquisition.

Foresight had already been successfully marketing and selling their GC3 launch monitor. So, rather than mess with a good thing, Bushnell left the Foresight Sports launch monitor and its pricing model alone and simply added the Bushell Launch Pro as a way to offer this same industry-leading technology in a different pricing package.

Since then, they’ve adjusted the pricing models for both the Launch Pro and GC3 at least twice, keeping us all on our toes.

Bottom line: This was simply a case of positioning one product in multiple ways to appeal to a wider customer base. And I think they’ve done just that. 

Would it maybe be simpler to understand if this was one product with one name and just different purchase tier options? Probably. But the end result is the same. We’ve got choices. And that’s not a bad thing for the golf consumer, even if it does leave some of us with a bit of option overload.

Foresight Sports GCQuad: The One Time 4 is Better than 3 on the Golf Course

So, we’ve unpacked the whole GC3 vs. Launch Pro situation. But there’s more to consider. And that’s the Foresight GCQuad. As you might have guessed, this adds a fourth camera to the three that you get with the GC3 and Launch Pro. With a quadrascopic four-camera system, the GCQuad provides even better accuracy and life-like representation of your shots.

But it ain’t cheap.

The base-level GCQuad package costs $14,500 and doesn’t include any of the aforementioned club data. Instead, it’s just ball data. Now you do get simulator functionality and 10 golf courses, but they are the 10 lesser-known courses. Not the big dogs like Pebble, St Andrews and Spyglass.

Then, for $19,999, you get the Fully-Loaded GCQuad Bundle. And it does include a number of metrics and features not available with any other option, including:

• Loft/Lie
• Face angle
• Impact location
• Closure rate
• Essential Putting Analysis (you can now get insight into every part of your game, including putting)

Interestingly, or disappointingly, even the $20K Quad option only gets you 10 golf courses. And they aren’t even the most desirable ones! Seems like a serious miss there to me.

Now, either way you buy your GCQuad, you also get:

• An 18” x 14” hitting zone (compared to the 7” x 10” with the GC3 and Launch Pro)
• An interchangeable lithium-ion battery
• An enhanced Premium Reflective Memory Display (makes it more viewable outdoors)
• Bluetooth connectivity

The unit itself is 2.5 pounds heavier, an inch wider and a half-inch taller than the GC3/Launch Pro.

GC3 vs. Launch Pro vs. GCQuad: Which Foresight Launch Monitor is Best for You?

Clearly, there’s a lot to digest here. I know that it may still feel a little overwhelming, but I hope that we’ve simplified things at least a little bit.

Here’s my general take:

First of all, like with all golf tech products, what’s right for one person isn’t necessarily right for another. That’s a given.

I’ll say this: If you’re a high-level competitive player or regular teaching pro, then the GCQuad is the best you can do. It’s going to give you the absolute best accuracy and graphics. It’s a bummer about the golf-course limitations, but maybe something will change down the road. Regardless, if you’re at the highest level, or if you’ve got a very large budget and simply want the ultimate, I’d get the GCQuad, cry once, and be done with it, knowing you have the best.

But if you’re like almost everyone else, it’s a matter of choosing which of the Launch Pro or GC3 subscriptions makes the most sense. To recap those:

You’ve got the launch monitor-only capability with the out-of-the-box Launch Pro for $3,499.99.

• Who is this for? For the person that wants the most accurate pro-sumer launch monitor and who isn’t too concerned about playing simulator golf. Likely, this makes a lot of sense for outdoor-only users.

Then, for another $249 per year (first year free), you can add the Basic Launch Pro subscription and get club data but still no simulator features.

• Who is this for? For the golfer who wants more data but still doesn’t care about sim.

For $699 a year with the Launch Pro Gold package, you can get all of the data plus simulator functionality with 10 golf courses.

• Who is this for? For the person who wants everything we’ve mentioned so far but maybe doesn’t plan to keep the unit for more than five years. Because if they do, I think they are better off with:

The option to fully unlock the Launch Pro with a one-time fee of $3,499.

• Who is this for? For the person who buys the Launch Pro and then decides down the road that they want everything it can do. Rather than pay $699 a year over and over, you’d be money ahead after five years if you opted for this choice rather than the Gold package.

Then there’s the option to buy the one-time $5,999 GC3 Ball Enabled Bundle. You won’t get club data, but you do get simulator access to 10 courses.

• Who is this for? Probably for the person that values sim more than data. If that’s you and you don’t want to spring for the extra 10 courses, this is probably your cheapest way to use this unit as a simulator. At least if you’re going to keep it for several years. If you were only going to keep it for a few years, it’d be more economical to buy the Launch Pro and pay for the Gold subscription, plus you’d get club data. But again, after five years, you’d spend more money than if you had bought the GC3 Ball Enabled Bundle.

Then we’ve got the GC3 Essentials Bundle for a one-time cost of $7,499. This one adds all of the club data plus the 10-course simulator access.

• Who is this for? Honestly, I don’t know. Why would you pay for this package when you could buy a Launch Pro and fully unlock it for a total of $6,998.99? Let me know in the comments below if I’m missing something. If not, this just seems like a trap that should be avoided.

And then there’s the GC3 Players Plus Bundle for a one-time purchase price of $8,999. You get all the ball and club data plus 20 simulator golf courses.

• Who is this for? For the golfer who wants to play simulated rounds at classics like Pebble Beach and the Old Course. This is how you do that.

And finally, there’s the GCQuad for either $14,500 (no club data but 10 courses) or $19,999 (all the data plus the 10 courses).

• Who is this for? As we’ve already discussed, ballers only.

There you have it. Even when we try and make it as simple as possible, it really isn’t all that simple. But if you take your time in combing through all that we’ve spelled out, I think it will become obvious to you which choice makes the most sense for you.

Here’s something that really is simple and obvious: By whatever name you want to call it, this launch monitor/simulator is killer! You buy this baby in whatever iteration, and you’ll be way, way ahead in terms of accuracy, dependability and fun.

Foresight (and subsequently Bushnell, who is owned by Foresight) has just completely changed their lineup of launch monitors.

And, I’m not so sure everyone is going to be happy.

What is the Foresight GC3s? What about the Bushnell LPi? 

And why do you get a rangefinder when you buy the GC3 or GC3s?

I’m going to answer all of these questions and more, and help you figure out if one of these devices is the best launch monitor for you.

Quick Recap: What is the New Foresight GC3s?

If you’re just looking for the main points, here you go:

Foresight just released the brand new (kind of) GC3s for $3,799 and a $500/year subscription, with the first year being free.

This “new” launch monitor as I understand it has mostly the same guts as the existing GC3 (full review of that here). But it has added their “Link” technology.

When you buy a GC3s, you’ll also get a Bushnell Pro X3 Link rangefinder (cool). This brand new model I imagine will be identical to previous X3 models from the last 2 years, but it will include the brand new Link feature. More on that in a minute.

Here’s my take on the most recent Bushnell Pro X3+ – last year’s version of this rangefinder.

Foresight is still selling its GC3 Launch Monitor for $6,999, but it’s also received the Link software upgrade. And like the GC3s, it will come with a Bushnell Pro X3 Link rangefinder.

What Happened to the Bushnell Launch Pro?

Right now Foresight is hyping the new GC3s, which at $3,799 places it about $700 cheaper than the Uneekor Eye Mini, which I’m sure wasn’t a fluke.

But the thing that isn’t getting talked about as much, is the new Bushnell LPi launch monitor.

The new LPi is currently listed as coming soon, so it’s not available quite yet, but it’s seemingly going to replace the existing Bushnell Launch Pro models.

It comes in at $2,799, ditches the screen entirely, and has club data included. But perhaps the biggest change here is that it’s being described as indoor only, and is clearly aimed at those looking for a mid-tier simulator option.

The price here is identical to the Uneekor Eye Mini Lite.

This all represents a huge shakeup in the Foresight ecosystem, and will definitely have ripples across the rest of the consumer launch monitor industry as well.

Should you get excited about the new LPi? I’m not quite so sure, we’ll come back to that in a second.

Link Technology: Is it Truly a Gamechanger?

The major technology upgrade here is the Link system between the GC3(s) and the new iteration of the Pro X3 rangefinder.

Foresight isn’t the first company to integrate launch monitor data into a rangefinder. Precision Pro has actually been doing this with their smart rangefinders since the release of their R1 (RIP) over 3 years ago.

But considering they don’t have a launch monitor of their own, and the integration was less than perfect, I’ve been waiting to see who would take over this niche.

Now we know.

The integration between the GC3s and Pro X3 Link is actually very cool.

The rangefinder has a virtual caddie feature that will give you two club recommendations based on the combination of hole and your personal club data.

On top of that, its “plays like” distance will factor in slope, current conditions, and all of your personal shot data. This theoretically will give it the most accurate “slope” numbers in golf.

It will know things like your personal trajectory, and where your misses are with each club.

I’m excited to get my units for review to see if it actually lives up to expectations.

What Does This Mean for Existing GC3 and Launch Pro Users?

But what if you just took advantage of one of those stellar sales on a $1,749 Ball-only Bushnell Launch Pro?

Or worse, what if you spent a whopping $$6,999 or more for a fully unlocked GC3? 

Will you get access to any of these new features?

I’m waiting to hear back on this.

My guess? 

GC3 users will get a firmware update that enables the Link technology, and they’ll be able to buy a Pro X3 Link rangefinder separately.

And Launch Pro users? Despite the fact it’s the exact same device, if I had to guess, I’d bet they’re not getting this upgrade.

But we’ll see, and I’ll update this as soon as I know.

Is Any of This Good for the Consumer? My Take.

There’s a lot to unpack here, and some of it is exciting, and some of it is frankly, pretty disappointing for consumers.

As a whole, this move effectively makes getting into the Foresight ecosystem considerably more expensive.

Right now the Bushnell Launch Pro is listed for $1,999 retail, but has been on sale for $1,749 for months.

Update: Literally in the 2 hours since I originally wrote this, and going back to edit, it appears the Ball Only Launch Pro has jumped back up to $1,999.

Now you’re looking at an extra $1,000 for a device that doesn’t have a screen and isn’t able to be used outdoors. It does however have club data, and to get the Launch Pro with club data included, the retail is currently $3,499 and often discounted to $3,000.

So if this is important to you, the new device will cost you a bit less – but you’re losing that extra flexibility of the touch screen and outdoor use.

So I think all of that is a bummer.

And if you’ve been in the market for a (relatively) affordable optical launch monitor, there’s a case to be made for running out and buying a Ball Only Launch Pro right now while you still can.

However, the GC3 is a much better deal on the high end.

For the same price as it was currently, you’re now getting the Link upgrade, an included rangefinder, and lifetime access to the Foresight suite of software with no subscription.

The GC3s is more of a mixed bag.

On the surface, you’re paying $700 more than what you’ve recently been able to get a Ball/Club Data Launch Pro, and you still have the $ 500/year subscription.

But you’re also getting the latest version of the best high-end golf rangefinder on the market in the Pro X3 Link.

Throw in the new Link technology, and what you’d expect would be many years of support for the product – and all of a sudden it doesn’t look as bad.

It’s still $700 cheaper than a Uneekor Eye Mini, and includes the rangefinder – even if the subscription is a little bit more expensive.

All that to say, it seems like a pretty reasonable deal if it fits the goals you have for your game and simulator needs.

Final Thoughts on the New Foresight Launch Monitors

I’m bummed to see the low end of the Foresight lineup essentially get cut off. I thought the Launch Pro was a great entry point for a lot of people, and among the most accurate (if not the most) devices for the money.

I think the $500/year subscription for a $3,799 is going to be a painful pill to swallow for some people, and there will be some backlash.

But I think if you look at everything you get for that price? You’re actually getting a ton for your money.

FSX Play is arguably my favorite sim software. I’ve historically never been a fan of their iPad software FSX Pro, but my guess is there will be some changes to incorporate the new Link features – so I’m excited to give it another chance.

Considering you can now pick up that device for $389, it’s easily one of the best launch monitor values out there at any price point.

But it has one fatal flaw: the app is terrible.

There have been some minor improvements since it was released, but the MySwingCaddie app is just not very good. It’s not very intuitive, the data isn’t great, and both Garmin and Rapsodo do a much better job if you’re willing to spend a little more money.

But all of that has changed recently as Voice Caddie (Swing Caddie?) has recently released the SC4 Pro.

This updated product features the same hardware, but there’s a new app, and with the help of some new machine learning upgrades – the SC4 Pro has added some new metrics as well.

But are the changes really an upgrade? Is the experience of using the SC4 Pro actually better than the original?

We’re going to look at all of that and more in this Voice Caddie SC4 Pro review.

Ready? Let’s do this thing.

What’s Different Between the SC4 and SC4 Pro?

Ok, before we do anything else, let’s look at the differences between the two units.

The hardware and Doppler Radar systems are exactly the same.

But using their proprietary ProMetrics engine, the new SC4 Pro now provides metrics for spin axis, side spin, back spin, and dispersion.

To take advantage of these new metrics, there’s a new app called Voice Caddie S which features a 3D range – and hopefully, a much better experience than the original MyVoiceCaddie app. More on that in a minute.

What about price?

The current retail price of the SC4 Pro is $599. The original retailed for $549. 

You might be thinking “But the title of your post said this was the best launch monitor under $500?”

Yep.

Breaking Eighty readers get a special price on the SC4, which brings it down to $499. You can also still pick up the original for $389 – but as you’ll see in this review, I don’t recommend doing that when you can get a significantly better version for just a little bit more.

First Impressions of the SC4 Pro

One thing that is still confusing is whether this is a “Voice Caddie” product or a “Swing Caddie” product.

They’re the same company. Online it seems to list the SC4 Pro as coming from Voice Caddie, but it still has a Swing Caddie logo on it.

I wish they’d just pick one name and stick with it across all their products.

The unboxing experience of the SC4 Pro is largely the same as the original model.

It’s well done and looks good. There’s nothing overly special that will blow you away, but you wouldn’t expect there to be at this price.

In the box you’ll find:

• SC4 Pro Unit
• Remote
• USB-C charging cord
• e6 Connect Activation Card
• Instructions

One thing worth noting is that the SC4 Pro doesn’t come with a carrying case. If you’d like one, you can add it for an extra $50.

If this were a more expensive product, this would bother me. But considering this device is already an excellent value, I like that they chose to keep the price lower, and then give options for add-ons for people that want them.

For what it’s worth, the carrying case is sturdy, well-built, and can also help with the alignment and setup of the device.

The device is charged via USB-C, and that works great. I wasn’t able to find what the battery life is rated for, but I’m going on 3+ hours of use without charging it, and it still is showing some charge left – so I don’t think this will be an issue for most people.

Setting Up the SC4 Pro

Speaking of setup, let’s talk about it.

On the surface, the setup is very simple. Turn on the device, put it 5 feet behind you, and away you go.

I appreciate the fact that you only need 5 feet of space behind you to use the SC4 Pro. Devices like the Rapsodo MLM2PRO and FlightScope Mevo+ require 7-8 feet for the most accurate results, so only needing 5 makes setup noticeably easier.

While the previous SC4 really was that simple to setup, you’ll want to be a little more precise with the new SC4 Pro. Now that there is increased lateral data, it’s even more important to make sure it’s setup and aligned properly.

If you’re on grass or have a large mat, this is pretty easily done. But if you’re on a mat that sits up a couple inches from the ground, you may find yourself getting less accurate readings unless you compensate for that.

The SC4 Alignment Stand

Voice Caddie sells an alignment stand that will allow you to raise and lower the device to get it even with the ball.

This works pretty well, but it’s certainly not the most seamless experience. The bolts it uses are fairly long. So much so that they partially block the view of the screen while you’re using them. With the bolts screwed in, the stand also becomes too big to fit in the bag it comes with – so to keep it portable, you have to unscrew each one every time you use it.

It’s cumbersome and inelegant at best. There’s a bubble level on the top that will help you make sure the device is level – and that actually works really well.

During setup, the unit will also help you with feedback regarding the leveling. Once you get it to “0” you’re good to go – and doing that with the included alignment stand was pretty easy.

If you place the unit just on the ground off the back of a mat, it will still give you metrics, but if the numbers seem to be off – this is probably why.

As an alternative, you can also place the unit on the carrying case if you decide to purchase that.

How Easy Is It to Connect the SC4 Pro to the App?

Connecting the SC4 to the app is just as easy as you’d hope. You download the app to your device, create an account, and then turn the SC4 Pro on.

Connect it via Bluetooth, enter in the pairing number, and you’re ready to rock.

Any subsequent use should auto-connect, and I’ve found this to work well.

One thing that surprised me is that if you’re connected to the app, you can’t get any metrics on the unit itself.

It simply reads “SIM”.

Considering one of the big selling points of this device is the built-in screen, I found this to be an odd choice.

Especially if you want to track your data, but don’t want to be checking your phone or iPad after every shot.

The VoiceCaddie S App: Talk About an Upgrade

I’m not going to lie, I didn’t have high hopes for this new app. I was so disappointed with the previous one, that I really didn’t expect there to be a major leap forward with the new one.

Boy was I wrong.

For a $500 launch monitor, the new VoiceCaddie S app is phenomenal. 

You have 3 modes when you sign in:

• Practice
• Swing Speed
• Statistics

Let’s take a look at what they each do.

Practice: This is Where You’ll Live with the SC4 Pro

The Practice mode in the app is their 3D range.

Within a single shot, I was blown away by this app and the range.

In part, because it represented such a strong upgrade already from the previous app.

But more so because of how high quality and complete it felt for such an inexpensive product with no subscription fee.

You’re able to configure a variety of views, configure exactly which metrics you want to see, and how you want to see them.

You can set target distances to give yourself something to aim at.

You can adjust the viewing angle, see shot lists, star notable shots – and it’s all very easy and intuitive.

The shot tracer is clear and works really well (we’ll talk more about unit accuracy in a minute).

It feels like a very good consumer-level 3D range solution that does most of what you’re going to want it to quickly and easily.

Now, you’re not going to get the same level of customization, accuracy, and data of say the Mevo Plus which is 3-5x the price depending on which version you get.

You’re also not getting the built-in camera or some of the extra modes that you get with the Rapsodo MLM2PRO – which if you get the lifetime subscription, comes in at over double the price of this.

But it works great for practice, and I found myself loving it – especially with an iPad setup on a tripod.

If you do buy this and plan to use this feature (or frankly with any launch monitor), I recommend you pick one up.

Swing Speed: Who Needs a Ball?

The second mode is a swing speed training mode.

This allows you to swing in front of the unit without a ball, and it will assess your swing speed.

There’s nothing fancy about this mode, but it does a wonderful job of telling you exactly what you need to see in big, clear graphics and text.

It will also show you your daily best, daily average, and best ever.

I particularly love the daily average, as this is what will allow you to track your speed gains over time.

There are plenty of devices that can do this, but pairing this with a Super Speed or similar product is a nice little extra benefit on top of everything else you get.

Statistics: A Nice Improvement

The third mode is the statistics page.

Here you can see all the data from your previous sessions.

This is definitely the weakest section of the app. The data is in there, and it’s better than the previous app – but it’s not as detailed or customizable as other systems.

The experience is much better if you’re using it on an iPad. When using an iPhone, everything in this section is pretty small and not mobile-optimized. So I do recommend using an iPad across the board with this device over your phone.

One thing I do appreciate about this though is that all your data syncs across devices. So if you use an iPad during your practice session, you’re able to load that same data on your phone later on.

How is the SC4 Pro Without the App?

One of the benefits of this unit over most other competitors in this price range is that there’s a built-in screen. So if you don’t want to worry about pairing it and using an app, you can just set it down, turn it on, make sure it’s aligned and swing away.

The screen is fairly bright and the metrics are generally easy to read.

It does still feel like a miss that you can’t use the screen while paired to the app, but I’ll stop dwelling on that.

In order to make the most out of your experience without the app, you’ll want to use the included remote.

It makes it easy to adjust volume, switch your current club, change modes, and so on.

The remote generally works really well.

I did find in one of my sessions the unit was facing directly into the sun, and that seemed to cause some issues in getting it to read the button pushes. But that’s the only time I’ve encountered anything like that.

How Accurate is the Voice Caddie SC4 Pro?

Alright onto the section you’ve likely been waiting for: how accurate is it?

The answer?

Reasonably.

With long to mid irons, I’ve found the SC4 to work remarkably well both indoors and outdoors.

The shot tracer has been fairly accurate on the majority of my shots. Distances were right in the zone of where they should have been – and spin rates were solid as well.

Even testing short punch shots and chips with these clubs, it did a great job at recognizing both the lower trajectory and getting distances correct.

Where I’ve run into a few more issues is with wedges and driver.

With my gap wedge, I found the distances to be accurate, but I had a handful of weird directional issues – where the shot tracer simply didn’t get it right.

This happened about 20% of the time.

Not the end of the world, but there were more accuracy issues noticed with wedges – and in my experience (so far), this is the area where the SC4 Pro struggles the most.

Driver has been mostly solid, but has had the occasional issue.

Distances do seem to be a bit more variable than with other clubs. I had some mishit shots that it said went clearly further than it did, and I had some very good ones, that registered as less than they were.

This is similar to my experience with the original SC4, and it’s a little bit worse when hitting indoors into a net – which is to be expected.

As with the wedges, the driver felt noticeably off about 25% of the time.

The rest of the time it was at least in the right ballpark.

Spin rates usually were usually within a few hundred RPMs of the launch pro, but occasionally would get pretty big differences of 2,000 to 3,000 rpms.

I’m hoping this trend generally holds true for indoor testing. If I can get similar results, then this would make the SC4 Pro a big success.

It’s important to keep price in mind with these numbers. At $500 you’re not going to get Trackman level accuracy and consistency.

As long as you’re not expecting that, you’ll be in good shape. 

That said, for the money, the SC4 Pro if anything has exceeded my performance expectations, even if it’s not spot on 100% of the time.

E6 Connect

One of the biggest selling points of this product is the fact that at $499 it’s among the cheapest launch monitors that allow you to do full-on simulation.

The $389 original SC4 can also do this, and if you can find a Garmin R10 on sale, it does it as well.

I haven’t tested the SC4 Pro with e6 yet, but based on the performance I had using their app – I expect it will represent a very nice upgrade in accuracy and experience over the original.

To be clear, it’s a mobile-only license, so you’ll only be able to use it on your phone or iPad.

One nice upgrade is that while the original SC4 only came with one e6 course, the new SC4 Pro comes with 5 (despite the included card only saying it comes with one.)

Those courses are:

• Aviara Golf Club
• Bandon Dunes
• The Sanctuary
• Stone Canyon
• Wade Hampton

Final Thoughts on the SC4 Pro

The bottom line is that the Voice Caddie SC4 Pro is in my opinion, the best personal launch monitor that you can get routinely for under $500.

The new app and 3D range is a massive upgrade over its predecessor and is a joy to use. Accuracy is on par with anything else in the price range.

That said, it does require taking a little bit more time to set it up properly when compared to say the Garmin R10. And while the available alignment stand does the job, it’s more cumbersome than it should be.

My experience so far has been extremely positive with this unit. The Rapsodo MLM2PRO has more modes and is a little bit more consistently accurate due to its dual camera system – but it’s also significantly more expensive when you factor in the subscription (and it doesn’t have a built-in screen).

The R10 is closer in price and certainly has some advantages as well (Home Tee Hero, Garmin Eco System, calculated club data.) But just looking at the practice experience, I prefer the 3D range of the SC4 Pro over the Garmin.

And the Mevo Plus performs better in terms of accuracy, modes, customizability etc. But it needs more space, is equally cumbersome to setup, and is significantly more expensive.

All that to say, if you’re in the market for a budget launch monitor that has simulator capabilities? The SC4 Pro is going to be an excellent option.

It offers so much, that nearly 4 years later, it’s still one of the best products in its class.

But after the success of the R10, rumors started swirling that Garmin was working on a much more high-end sibling. 

I’ve heard rumblings for years, but no one seemed to know if 1) this product actually existed or 2) what it would actually bring to the table.

Well, I’ve got good news, we don’t have to wonder anymore, as the Garmin Approach R50 is now out in the wild.

But what’s even better? I got a surprise email 4 days ago that said “There’s an R50 on it’s way to you, you’ll have it tomorrow.”

So today? I get to share my hands-on first impressions of the brand new Garmin Approach R50 launch monitor – and oh man, there’s a lot to share.

To be clear, this is not a full in-depth review. I’ll release that within the next week after I’ve had more time with the unit. In this post I’ll tell you all about what the R50 is, its features, as well as my initial impressions after a few hours of using it.

What is the Garmin Approach R50?

Before we get too far into the details of the product, let’s talk about what it actually is.

The Garmin Approach R50 is a photometric launch monitor and simulator all in one.

That’s right, it’s the first launch monitor to also feature simulator capabilities in one standalone unit.

It provides 15 different ball and club data points that are accurately measured from its 3 high-speed cameras on the built-in 10″ screen.

It’s compatible with the Garmin Golf App, but it will run an updated version of Garmin’s Home Tee Hero software directly on the unit itself. You can then use an HDMI cord to connect to an external device like a TV or projector – more on that in a bit though.

First Impressions of the Garmin Approach R50

Upon receiving the R50 and taking it out of the box, I had two very obvious initial thoughts.

The first, this thing is big. 

It’s easily the largest of all the photometric launch monitors I’ve tested, and is roughly 50% bigger than the Bushnell Launch Pro.

The good news is that despite the size, it doesn’t feel that big when using it. It actually isn’t much heavier than the Launch Pro, and the way it’s designed with a built-in handle behind the screen actually makes it very easy to pick up and move around. 

This brings me to my second major first impression: the case.

The R50 comes with a seriously impressive carrying case.

It’s a very welcome feature in that it makes the size of the unit even less of an issue since it’s so easy to transport.

The only other launch monitor I’ve used that comes with a case as robust as this is the Uneekor Eye Mini. And considering the premium price point of the R50, it’s a welcome addition.

There are three ports in the back: USB-C , HDMI, and power.

Otherwise, my initial thoughts upon taking it out of the box is that it’s a really sleek-looking unit. The all-black design looks good, and the screen dwarfs anything else on the market in both size and quality.

That said, since it’s a touch screen, it does seem to be a bit of a fingerprint magnet.

How is the Setup on the R50?

Most of the latest golf launch monitors are pretty straightforward to setup, but the R50 may be the easiest of all of them.

Everything about the R50 setup process has been unbelievably smooth.

Connecting it to WiFi is made very easy by the large screen with a full keyboard.

Once connected, you either create or login to an existing Garmin Golf account.

This has worked flawlessly for me, and it imported my personalized bag and club info directly onto the R50.

The Touch Screen and User Interface

One of the biggest surprises for me so far is how responsive the touch screen is. In a world where we’re used to iPhone-like responsiveness, I’ve found other products can feel a little slow or laggy in comparison.

Not the R50. Navigating through the menus and screens feels great. For a product that relies so heavily on its screen, it had better work well. And fortunately, it works great.

Better yet, the user interface is excellent.

It’s very easy to navigate, customize, and use both the simulator and practice features.

It also has a great screen for showing you if the ball is in the hitting zone or not. In real time it will show you exactly where the ball is registering, and once it’s in the right spot both a green box on the screen will appear, and a green light at the base of the unit will show that it’s ready for use.

Once you’re logged in, there are three primary modes you can use:

• Practice 
• Home Tee Hero
• Third-Party

Let’s look at each real quickly.

Practice

The Practice mode is exactly what you’d expect. 

There are four virtual ranges for you to choose from, and you’re able to customize the screen in a variety of ways depending on what you want to see.

So if you want half the screen to show your shot tracer range, and the other to show all your club data – you can do that.

Want a full list of metrics and the Impact Camera? No problem.

Want to see the range on your projector screen, and all the metrics on the R50 itself? Done.

It really allows you to get the exact data you want to see very easily.

A lot of the graphics and interface feel similar, but upgraded, to what you see in the Garmin Golf App when using the Approach R10.

Play (Home Tee Hero)

This is where the “built-in simulator” capabilities come into play.

You can play over 42,000 courses directly on the Approach R50 through Garmin Home Tee Hero.

This is an updated version to what you’re able to get on in the Garmin App using the R10.

You can select basically any course you can possibly imagine, set your desired parameters, and play true simulated rounds of golf.

You can easily download any courses you want as well if you plan to take to an outdoor range and won’t have WiFi available.

In my experience, I’ve found that it can be pretty cumbersome to use modes like this on other devices where you have to use a phone or iPad to set it up – especially if you don’t have a dedicated indoor setup.

But with having such a large screen, I’ve found myself really enjoying playing these simulated rounds without any additional projector or screen. The screen on the R50 is big enough, and positioned well enough, to make it enjoyable to use this mode directly on the unit.

It also just simplifies everything when you don’t have to connect to an app – which I’ve enjoyed.

In order to use Home Tee Hero, you will need a Garmin Golf Subscription, which is $9.99/month or $99/year.

Not ideal, but also in the world of launch monitor subscriptions, this one is pretty affordable.

Connect (Third Party Simulator Access)

And in case Home Tee Hero isn’t enough of a “true simulator” for you, then it will also be compatible with GSPro, e6, and Awesome Golf.

You will need to use a separate device like an iPad or PC to use third-party solutions, so you can’t use these on the built-in screen.

When you buy an R50 you’ll get 5 e6 Connect mobile courses for free.

One of the best features of the R50 is that you don’t need a subscription to use third-party solutions. So for instance, with the Launch Pro, if you wanted to use GSPro, you would need their $500/year Gold Membership just to use any third-party simulator on the uniut. Then with GSPro costing $250/year, you’re looking at $750 a year just to use GSPro on that device.

With the R50 you don’t have to pay anything other than the GSPro, Awesome Golf, or e6 annual fee – which is great to see.

What Metrics Does the R50 Provide?

The R50 provides 15 different ball and club metrics, that are directly measured by the device as opposed to calculated using an algorithm as is the case with the less expensive R10.

The metrics you get with the R50 are:

• Carry Distance
• Total Distance
• Backspin
• Sidespin
• Spin Axis
• Attack Angle
• Launch Angle
• Launch Direction
• Apex Height
• Club Path
• Club Face
• Face to Path
• Club Speed
• Ball Speed
• Smash Factor

And as mentioned, fortunately, it’s very easy to customize the data points to see exactly which metrics are important to you.

As of now, there’s no compatibility with Garmin Golf watches, which is something I’d love to see in the future.

How Much Does the Garmin Approach R50 Cost?

The Garmin Approach R50 has a retail price of $4,999.

If you’d like access to the Home Tee Hero features, you will need to have a Garmin Golf Membership which is $9.99/month or $99/year.

How Easy is it To Connect to an External Device?

I can’t recall another launch monitor I’ve used that has an HDMI input.

With the R50 this is the primary way you’ll connect it to an external monitor, since it’s both the computer and the launch monitor.

Connecting it couldn’t be easier. Literally, you plug in an HDMI cord to the R50 and an external TV or projector.

That’s it. It comes up and starts working right away. 

And the user interface makes it very easy to select what you want on the R50 and what you want on the monitor.

So if you want all your data metrics on the R50, and want the simulated round on the monitor for instance? That’s incredibly easy to setup.

Final Thoughts on the Garmin Approach R50 and What’s to Come

Overall, I’ve been incredibly impressed by what I’ve seen of the R50 so far.

Having such a high-quality built-in screen really enhances the usability and the flexibility of the device.

Even if it didn’t have Home Tee Hero built in, it’d be one of my favorite launch monitors to use. So having that? It’s icing on the cake.

However, at $5k it’s not a cheap device – so it won’t be for everyone.

Within the next week, I’ll be updating this post to be a proper full review. 

In it, I’ll look at the accuracy of the unit, how it compares directly to other competing products, and any features in particular that I love, or that seem to be missing.

But my first impressions after just a few hours of use, are that the R50 has been worth the wait. This is truly one of the most unique and enjoyable golf launch monitors to use, and I have no doubt it will be wildly successful for the company.
