Not because they aren’t good. They clearly know what they’re doing, and they’ve got the tour presence to prove it.

But I don’t know, I’ve just never gravitated towards their look and design. And I haven’t always found as much out of the performance as I would have liked for my personal taste.

But the FootJoy HyperFlex are different. Totally different.

I took these shoes on my recent golf trip to Vietnam, and I came away genuinely impressed. The HyperFlex blends classic FootJoy DNA with some modern performance touches in a way that works better than I anticipated.

This is a shoe that surprised me – in a good way.

Let me tell you about it.

First Impressions of the FootJoy HyperFlex Golf Shoes

So the styling with these shoes is unmistakably FootJoy. Right out of the box, there’s that familiarity. Clean lines, minimal branding, no gimmicks. But there’s also a slightly modern edge to this pair of shoes that helps it stand out from some of their more old-school offerings.

Compared to trend-forward brands like Payntr or G/FORE, the HyperFlex definitely leans more traditional. But that doesn’t mean it’s boring. It just has a more refined aesthetic. So even though it’s a modern shoe and an athletic design, these shoes still stick closer to classic than what other brands are doing.

One thing that caught me off guard was that I assumed from looking at the shoes that the upper was made from a breathable mesh material. But in-hand, it’s actually a TPU material that mimics the look of mesh while adding structure and waterproof performance.

Speaking of which…

Waterproofing and Build Quality

The HyperFlex comes with a two-year waterproof warranty, and after wearing these in the tropical rainforests of Vietnam, I have absolutely no doubt it can back that up.

The upper doesn’t feel flimsy or permeable. It has a synthetic, plastic-like structure that still manages to feel comfortable and supportive. This feels like a shoe that was built to perform.

I also noticed a little more heel and ankle support than I expected. The collar comes up just a touch higher than most spiked golf shoes I’ve worn, and there’s a snugness in the heel that creates a locked-in feel. I think most golfers will really enjoy that enhanced stability.

And the overall durability? Everything about the materials and construction suggests these shoes are going to last. FootJoy knows how to make a reliable golf shoe. That’s one of the advantages of going with a proven brand as opposed to a more boutique alternative.

On-Course Performance

Alright, after walking a few rounds in the FootJoy HyperFlex shoes, the word that comes to mind again and again is “stable.”

There’s excellent lateral support, and you can really feel the stability in your golf swing as you transition your weight.

The outsole features FootJoy’s OptiFlex design, which allows for flex in key points of the sole while still maintaining structure where it’s needed. You feel grounded but not restricted.

The spikes are a little deceptive. Out of the box, they look and feel plasticky and almost like a rubber-type texture. But in practice, they grip really well. I didn’t have any issues, even on my most aggressive swings or walking on slippery surfaces.

That said, I’m curious to see how they hold up long-term. The rubbery texture doesn’t scream “ultra-durable,” but time will tell.

Comfort and Fit

Comfort is always subjective, but for me, the HyperFlex felt great from day one. There’s no break-in period to speak of. They felt ready to go right out of the box.

The midsole features FootJoy’s StratoFoam cushioning, which is designed to absorb shock while returning energy with each step. Marketing language aside, I will say that these have felt supportive and comfortable for the entire round each time I’ve worn them.

One thing to note: The heel feels slightly raised. It’s a subtle sensation, but you might notice it if you’re used to a flatter insole. I adjusted quickly, but it did catch me off guard at first. And if this is something you might think will bother you, consider a zero-drop shoe from someone like TRUE.

Fit-wise, the shoe runs true to size, but the toe box is slightly on the narrow side. If you have a wider foot, you might want to try them on before pulling the trigger.

Style and Value

Look, I know it might be a stretch to call $180 a good value for a pair of golf shoes.

But have you looked around today’s golf shoe market? This HyperFlex price is actually not bad at all.

With premium models from G/FORE, Payntr, and Ecco pushing well into the $200-plus range, the HyperFlex delivers high-end performance at a slightly more palatable price point. You’re getting a tour-level shoe from one of the most respected brands in the game.

Is it a budget option? No. But is it a strong value relative to its competition? No question.

How the FootJoy HyperFlex Compares to Other Options

I haven’t worn every pair of golf shoes out there, but… I’ve worn quite a few of them. Here are some of my thoughts on how the HyperFlex stacks up against other shoes I’ve tested that might be likely direct competitors.

Compared to the Ecco S-Three or the New Biom H5, the HyperFlex is less plush but more structured and supportive. If comfort is your top priority, you might prefer the Eccos. But if you’re looking for more stability, the HyperFlex noses ahead.

Compared to the Payntr Trainer X 001, the Payntr is lighter and more athletic feeling. But the HyperFlex wins on support and waterproofing.

Compared to my list of best all-day golf shoes, I don’t think the HyperFlex belongs in that grouping, even if there are some pricing similarities. But the HyperFlex are much more of a dedicated golf shoe than the type of shoe you’re likely to want to wear off the course.

That said, these FootJoys are going to deliver more stability and all-weather performance than the most of the shoes on that all–day list.

Who Should Buy the FootJoy HyperFlex?

The HyperFlex isn’t for everyone. But for the right golfer, I think it’s going to be a big hit.

If you:

• Prefer a structured shoe with excellent support
• Play in wet or unpredictable weather regularly
• Appreciate classic styling with modern touches
• Don’t require a ton of width in the toe box

… then this shoe could be a great fit for you.

If you’re more drawn to ultra-lightweight, sneaker-style shoes, or if you have a very wide foot, or if you want shoes from a brand that isn’t quite as mainstream, there are definitely better options out there for you.

Final Thoughts on the FootJoy HyperFlex Golf Shoes

These shoes surprised me. They really did. I really wasn’t expecting to love a pair of FootJoys. Like them, sure. But this brand just has never really been one I’ve gravitated towards.

But these shoes are different. In fact, the HyperFlex are my favorite FootJoy golf shoes ever. They’re more comfortable than I expected. More stable than I expected. And frankly, more stylish than I expected.

FootJoy took a lot of the things they do well — quality materials, waterproofing, dependable fit — and paired them with just enough modern flair to appeal to a broader group of golfers.

It’s not the flashiest shoe on the market. But it just might be one of the most well-rounded. And, as noted, when you look at the competition, the price is reasonable.

For golfers looking for a reliable, high-performance shoe that doesn’t scream for attention but quietly delivers, the HyperFlex deserves a spot on your short list.

All of Payntr’s shoes are built with the goal to give the golfer as much of an advantage as they possibly can through the performance of their shoes.

I’ve always liked the styling of their models, but it doesn’t take long to notice that many of them do have a similar look to them – which is kind of smart when you think about it. As a new company, you have limited resources. By streamlining the design elements of their shoes, and then focusing on iterations that will appeal to different golfing needs (spikeless, spiked, training etc.) – you’re able to maximize your results.

And it’s worked. Payntr has quickly developed a loyal following – myself included.

But at the end of 2024, they blew up their playbook with the release of the Eighty Seven SC.

This collaboration with Jason Day still has all of the hallmark technology and performance that Payntr is known for.  The difference? An all-new design, that I think is one of the most beautiful golf shoes on the market.

Does it live up to expectations? Let’s find out.

First Impressions of the Payntr Eighty Seven SC

You might be wondering, where does the name come from? Jason was born in 1987 – hence the name Eighty Seven SC (or Signature Collection).

Out of the box, these shoes look even better than they do in the pictures.

They have a sleek, athletic silhouette with just enough edge to stand out without screaming “Look at me.” It’s modern, yet timeless.

Many G/FORE shoes for instance will be too fashion-forward for some. Ecco might be a little too, say, European for some. Footjoy, a little too traditional.

The Eighty Seven SC hits the perfect balance of fashion, function, and uniqueness that make it one of my favorite shoe releases of the last few years.

But for as good-looking as it is, it doesn’t mean much if it doesn’t perform.

So does it?

How Do They Perform? And Does All This Tech Actually Work?

When it comes to performance golf shoes, there’s a fine line between gimmicky tech and real, game-changing innovation. The Payntr Eighty Seven SC? It’s all substance. This shoe is absolutely loaded with features that actually do something, and after wearing them for multiple rounds, I can confidently say that all the tech Payntr crammed in here serves a purpose. 

But honestly, I’ve worn enough Payntr shoes to know this would be the case.

Stability & Lockdown: Your Feet Aren’t Going Anywhere

One of the biggest compliments I can give the Eighty Seven SC is how locked-in your foot feels without sacrificing comfort. A lot of golf shoes either squeeze too tight or feel too loose, but Payntr nailed the balance here.

I will say that they felt a little bit stiffer during my first round than other Payntr shoes. Still comfortable, but they needed to be broken in a bit more than say the 004 RS – their original spikeless model.

I did notice that pretty quickly I developed a toebox crease with these shoes. So if you’re a sneakerhead who likes everything pristine – this may bother you.

Just keep in mind, that you don’t want golf shoes too stiff or you’ll sacrifice comfort and wearability. Personally I have no issues here, but figured it was worth mentioning.

Traction is everything when it comes to performance golf shoes, and Payntr’s tech here is next level. Whether you’re playing in dry, fast conditions or dealing with dewy fairways in the early morning, the Eighty Seven SC has you covered.

Which is pretty obvious to see, just by looking at the sole:

What sets this apart from your standard shoe is how Payntr engineered the traction to work in three dimensions. Both when pushing off in your backswing or planting hard through impact, you can feel the grip and the shoes wanting to stay connected to the ground.

Payntr also included a Carbitex carbon fiber propulsion plate in the midsole which they say helps you harness ground reaction forces—basically, the energy your feet create when you press into the turf. Does this translate to tangible power gains? That’s hard to measure, but it definitely contributes to the solid feeling you get while swinging. 

Cushioning & Energy Return: Comfort That Lasts All 18

Golf shoes that are too soft can make you feel unstable, while shoes that are too firm can leave your feet aching after a few holes. The Eighty Seven SC hits a really nice balance between cushioning and responsiveness.

One of the hallmarks of their shoes is the Nitrogen footbed & midsole. This dual-layer foam system continues ot impress me just as it has in their other models.

Basically the “PMXNitro+” Midsole helps you harness energy return in the shoes. So over the course of your round every step takes just a little less work on your part.

It sounds like a bullet point on their sales page (and it is), but you really do feel the benefit of this after walking a full 18.

The shoes are also fully waterproof, and while I haven’t used them in inclement weather, I have no doubt they’ll perform well.

Final Thoughts on the Payntr Eighty Seven SC

I think this is the shoe that’s going to take Payntr from being more of a niche brand, to one that is a major player in the world of golf footwear.

When I posted about these shoes on Instagram, 91% of over 200 who responded to a survey, said they loved the way they looked.

We’re all looking for something a little bit different when it comes to stability, looks, traction, and price.

But hopefully by the end of this post, you’ll have a solid idea of what the best shoe is for you. 

I’ve personally worn and tested every single one of these shoes over at least 2 18 18-hole rounds (and most many more than that).

I tried to cover a wide array of fits, styles, and price points to help you truly find the best golf shoes for your needs.

But remember, I’m just one dude. There are hundreds of different styles out there from dozens of brands. If something you love isn’t on this list, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not worth it. I just only include products here I’ve personally reviewed and can vouch for.

Despite originally coming out 4 years ago, Ecco continues to sell the Biom C4 – and for good reason. These are the most comfortable golf shoes I’ve ever worn.

Ever.

They’re even more cushioned than the excellent Biom H4.

The GORE-TEX Yak leather upper is very soft and totally waterproof.

The styling won’t be for everyone, but if you want a very comfortable, high-quality spikeless shoe – this is one of the best options on the market. Over the last 4 years I’ve played more rounds in these than any other one shoe.

But the star of the show here is the stability. The tapered ankle locks you in and provides awesome lateral support. With so many golfers choosing to go with spikeless shoes, when you put these on you’re reminded why so many pros still play with Tour shoes.

No issues whatsoever with waterproofing. You’ll keep your feet dry for the lifespan of this shoe.

It really is tough to go wrong with FootJoy (with the exception of the Fury, honestly, we didn’t love em).

Like the Ecco’s these are a bit pricey for some people at $200. But you most certainly are going to have a durable, high-performing golf shoe that’s going to likely last as long or longer than anything else you might buy.

Best Vacation Shoe: TRUE Linkswear Knit II

If you’re going on vacation and are playing a round or two of cart golf, but don’t want to haul an extra pair of golf shoes? These are for you.

They’re incredibly lightweight and are fantastic for wearing around town, at a resort, to the beach – wherever.

Lightest Golf Shoe: Adidas ZG23

There’s a reason Adidas has put so much weight behind their ZG23 golf shoes over the past year: they’re great shoes.

If you don’t factor in “all day” style shoes, the ZG23 are among the lightest golf shoes on the market.

This makes them a joy to walk in, and it’s remarkable how stable and planted you feel given the fact they weigh so little.

They have both all-season and summer options, so depending on how much waterproofness you’re looking for, there’s a model that should work.

Best Boa Golf Shoe: The Ecco Biom G5

It’s no secret I think Ecco makes some of, if not the best golf shoes on the market. That said, they’re expensive, so they won’t be for everyone.

Recently I tested out the Ecco Biom G5. It’s the first spiked model of Eccos I’ve worn, and honestly? They’re just as good as I thought they’d be.

What to Look for When Buying Golf Shoes

The main criteria to apply when shopping for golf shoes is almost identical to that of any other shoe-buying experience. 

Basically, it comes down to:

• Price
• Comfort
• Durability
• Style
• Performance

You want a shoe that you can afford, that’s going to allow you to comfortably walk potentially hundreds of rounds without breaking down and that’s going to give you the look you want. 

On top of that, you need a shoe that’s going to provide great traction in varying conditions and, ideally. keep your feet dry. 

If you can find a shoe that does each of these things well – and you can – you’re going to be able to forget about your feet. They’ll be set. 

A couple other factors to consider:

#1) Spiked or Spikeless?

Spikeless or hybrid golf shoes are becoming more and more popular. And traction-wise, they’re getting better and better.

Generally, the big advantages of spikeless shoes are look and comfort. You can find some very stylish, casual golf shoes that don’t look too much different from what you might otherwise wear out to dinner. 

And they’re pretty much just as comfortable as whatever other non-golf street shoes you have in your closet.

Spiked shoes, on the other hand, are still the best for ultimate traction, especially on wet or hilly courses. 

You’ll want to be sure you understand what you’re getting waterproof-wise. Many spikeless or street golf shoes won’t be designed to provide the same waterproofing you’re more likely to find with spiked shoes.

For many golfers, the decision comes down to comfort and style vs. traction and stability. You can find spiked shoes that look good and are comfortable, but there are more options available for those factors with spikeless models. 

And you can certainly find spikeless shoes that have very good traction and stability and are waterproof, but the ultimate in those categories is typically best found with spikes.

#2) A Word About Price

Everyone’s got their own budget. I get and respect that. But if at all possible, I’d encourage you to reach just a little bit with your spending on shoes.

Seriously, if you consider how many miles you’ll potentially walk with a single pair of golf shoes, it really is worth it to step up to the highest level that you can afford.

A quality shoe might last you three or more seasons. So the difference between say a $100 pair of shoes and a $150 pair of shoes becomes relatively negligible spread over a few years.

I’m not saying you should make an irresponsible decision and spend money you don’t have, but if you can step it up just a bit, especially if you’re following this guide, I can almost guarantee you’ll be happy that you did.

That said, the best shoe for you may be one that’s less expensive. For instance, some of the ones you’ll see here are excellent and under $100.

So consider your needs, and choose a shoe accordingly!

A couple years ago I reviewed the TRUE OG Feel, which was one of the first barefoot-style golf shoes on the market.

If you’re looking for that type of shoe? It’s fantastic.

At the time I called it the “Nike Free of Golf.”

The problem? For a lot of people, there won’t be enough support and cushioning to walk a full 18 holes without starting to feel a little soreness – especially for people not used to a barefoot shoe.

TRUE recognized this and essentially said “how do we create a zero-drop, barefoot golf shoe, that’s still comfortable enough for the average person?”

What is a Zero Drop Shoe?

The first thing we should touch on, is what is a “zero drop” shoe?

Essentially that means that your heel and your toe are at the exact same height. So zero drop shoes mimic the experience of standing on the ground barefoot.

The elevated heel of a traditional shoe, while usually more cushioned and more comfortable, can cause physical issues to your body over time.

The goal of the OG Cush is to provide the benefits of a zero-drop, barefoot shoe, while still being super comfortable.

First Impressions: Yep, this is Comfy

The shoes come in the traditional TRUE shoe bag, which is a nice differentiator from other brands who use regular shoe boxes.

I got them in a white colorway that looks really good.

There’s subtle contrast with leather around the heel, and the white and red pull tab on the back adds a nice little pop of color.

As with the vast majority of TRUE shoes, these are “All Day” style shoes, which means you’ll be able to wear them both on the course and off.

As a casual dude that like clothes and shoes that can perform double duty, I love this is trend in golf.

I’d rather have fewer things I can get more use out of, than have all of my golf stuff be dedicated just for golf.

But that’s just me.

But do they work as golf shoes?

The OG Feel is a great shoe, and is generally comfortable. But I did find that after walking 18 holes, especially if there’s some elevation change, I’d be feeling it at the end of the day.

With the Cush on the other hand, I haven’t had any of those issues.

You immediately feel the extra padding when you put the shoes on, especially on the inside around your ankles. It’s more plush, and definitely ups the comfort level.

They also upped the level of padding in the midsole, which I think is the primary addition that helps keep this shoe comfortable over longer periods of time.

While it’s not the most stable or traction-heavy shoe, it’s certainly good enough for most people under most circumstances.

I’ve now played 3 summer rounds of 18 holes, and haven’t run into any issues where they didn’t perform great as golf shoes.

On a wet course, or in the off-season, these wouldn’t be my go-to shoes, considering there’s not a ton of water resistance. But if you generally play in dry weather, these could totally be your primary pair.

I’m a size 12 and these fit true to size. As with many of their OG shoes, the toe box is on the wider side, so if you’re some one who likes a little extra room – these could be a good fit.

Final Thoughts on the TRUE Linkswear OG Cush

TRUE continues to do a good job of making all day style shoes that each serve a little bit of a different purpose.

For years, they felt too in your face for my personal style. And still, there are a lot of G/FORE stlyes that are just too bold for me.

But some of the products that have a little more restraint? They’re just the right balance of flair, fit, and comfort to have become one of my favorite brands in golf.

And when one of your favorite brands launches an entirely new shoe?

That’s something to get excited about.

G/FORE has just released the new G/18 golf shoe.

At $250, they aren’t cheap, and they provide something different than other G/FORE models.

So should you buy it? How does it compare to brand staples like the MG4+ and Gallivanter?

We’re going to cover all that in more in this G/FORE G/18 shoe review.

First Impressions of the G/18

Something I love about G/FORE is they do a better job than most brands of totally differentiating each shoe model.

This starts with the box.

Every box is different, and is done in a way that fits with the style of the shoe.

Considering G/FORE golf shoes are among the more expensive shoes out there, regardless of which ones you choose, this small attention to detail goes a long way.

Out of the box, this continues.

The G/18 feels like a high-end shoe, and the construction is up there with the best I’ve seen on a shoe.

The shoes are bigger than I expected them to be, and definitely have a bit of a fashion-forward vibe.

I best comparison point within the G/FORE range is going to be the MG4+, which is one of the best all-around shoes on the market. They’re super comfortable, waterproof, and have decent styling.

At first glance, the G/18 looks to be just as waterproof, havs bolder styling, and maybe even better traction.

But we’ll get to that in a second.

There are some great visual touches like the “Play” and “Nice” that are emblazoned across the right and left toe box.

The raised G/FORE logo on the back of the shoe also looks really nice and is one more element that makes these shoes feel worthy of their price point.

Overall, my first impression of these was very positive. They look cool, have many of the G/FORE hallmarks you’ve come to expect (Hello, massaging nubs!), and are well-built.

But are they comfortable? Do they hold up for competitive rounds despite being spikeless?

They Perform as Good as they Look

Putting on the shoes one of the first things I noticed is the fit feels slightly roomier than the MG4+, and significantly more so than the leather Gallivanters, or even the crossover Gallivan2r shoes.

You particularly notice it in the toe box. So if you have wider feet, or like to have a little extra room, these are a pair to consider. Even with that space, they seem to fit true to size, as my size 12s fit great.

The massage-rubbed insoles are as comfortable as ever. Seriously, it may seem weird if you’ve never worn them – but they’re fantastic.

The soles are super beefy for a spikeless shoe.

The most notable feature you notice is that the spiky textured sole wraps all the way around to the toe box. It’s a cool design element that also adds extra durability to that part of the shoe. It’s vaguely reminiscent of Adidas Code Chaos models.

I’ve now walked two rounds in the G/18, and they’re wonderfully comfortable. They haven’t needed any time to break in, and feel sporty while still providing plenty of support and traction.

I’ve never felt like the MG4+ was lacking in either of those departments, but I feel like the G/18 goes one step above. Obviously not quite Gallivanter G/Lock status, but very good.

Downsides of the G/18

I honestly don’t really have many complaints about this shoe.

If I were nitpicking the clear gum material used on part of the sole will be tough to clean and will start to yellow pretty quickly. But it’s the bottom of a golf shoe – so I don’t think most people will take issue with this.

Styling won’t be for everyone, and at $250, the price won’t be either.

But if you’re ok with those things? Then there’s a lot to love with the G/18.

So Should You Buy Them?

The Ecco Biom C4 had been my pick for “best overall golf shoe” for years. And it’s still among my favorites. It’s certainly the most comfortable pair of golf shoes I’ve ever owned.

But I’d be lying if I said they are overly attractive.

I’ve personally been gravitating to G/FORE, Payntr, or TRUE for most of my rounds these days – with G/FORE taking the bulk of them.

As I think some of those brands add just enough fashion to function to make them more appealing to me all around.

And the G/18 shoes are among the best at marrying all of those elements

If you’re looking for an “all day” golf shoe – this isn’t it. Go for the TRUE Lux Hybrid or G/FORE MG4x2 for that.

But if you want a unique, attractive, and comfortable golf shoe that doesn’t sacrifice on performance? The G/18 is one of the best out there. Between this and the MG4+, I’d personally lean toward the G/18, as I like the styling better.

But the good news? There’s no wrong answer. Every shoe I’ve mentioned in this review is worthy of a purchase, and if you do decide to invest in the G/18 I think you’ll be very happy.

Over the years of reviewing golf products, I’ve always kind of admired G/FORE from afar.

Being a very fashion-forward brand, some of their products have always just been a little too in-your-face for me.

I’m not the guy that’s going to be wearing a bright purple golf glove, or super loud prints on my polos.

Even the racing stripes on these G/FORE shorts I reviewed a while back, felt like too much for me.

But if you start looking at G/FORE’s offerings, you’ll notice that it isn’t all flashy.

They have products in every category that are more subtle, yet still stylish.

And as I dug in more? I began to really like what I saw.

So for my first proper G/FORE review in years, I decided to go with one of their staples: the G/FORE MG4+ golf shoe.

I always thought the shoe looked great, but in my head, G/FORE was always a little more fashion than function.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

First Impressions of the G/FORE MG4+ Golf Shoe

I’m a little behind the ball on these, as they were first released in 2020, but they’ve been updated each season and I’m glad I gave them a look.

One thing you notice straight away is that G/FORE takes their presentation seriously. 

I received three pairs of G/FORE shoes to review and each one had a different box, with different branding and extra touches.

For shoes that retail over $200 this is nice to see. And opening the box regardless of whether it was the MG4+, the MG4X2, or the uber-stylish Gallivanters – they all had the feeling of occasion.

Taking the G/FORE MG4+ out of the box, I was immediately impressed with the build quality. The upper is sturdy yet flexible, and is made of a waterproof outer that is very easy to clean.

It doesn’t read as the most breathable shoe, but after playing a round on the hottest day of the year so far, I didn’t find breathability to be an issue at all (more on that below).

The “auxetic lattice” mid-sole is similar to what you’d find on an Adidas Boost shoe, and I love the lattice look. It adds just enough flair to make the shoe stand out, without being over the top.

The 3D molded heal cup sports a nice G/Fore logo, and feels very supportive. 

The shoes come with an extra set of laces, which is a small thing, but a nice touch.

So they aren’t shy about chiming in with their own opinions on how something works or looks (sorry, Sqairz).

Wearing the MG4+ out for the first time, I had 3 people comment on them within the first 15 minutes.

G/FORE is obviously a huge golf brand, but at least where I’m from, you don’t see a ton of them on the course.

So when you see a pair, they stand out.

And these, despite being relatively subtle in comparison to some of their other models (I’m looking at you MG4x2), just look good.

I like them even more in person than I do in photos.

And the best part? They’re among the most comfortable golf shoes I’ve ever worn.

The triple-density foam footbed has “massaging nubs” which I was a bit skeptical of when I first looked at them.

These are common among many G/FORE models, but this was my first time wearing a pair.

I kind of expected it to be more of an aesthetic thing, but you really do feel the “massaging effect” when you start walking around.

I expected this to dissipate during the round and even expected it might get uncomfortable or cause a blister.

Nothing like that happened. After a 6 mile walk, my feet felt as fresh and comfortable as ever.

It was a record-hot April day, nearly approaching 90 degrees in Portland when I tested these out. And my feet stayed dry and comfortable for the entire afternoon. 

The sole honestly doesn’t look like it would provide an insane amount of traction. It’s not quite as hard as say the Ecco Biom C4, but I’ve had zero issues at all with traction – even on a course that’s still wet in spots.

A lot of brands are coming out with shoes these days that could double as trainers or off-course shoes as well. TRUE Linkswear does a great job of that with the All-Day Knit series and Future Staples. With G/FORE the MG4X2 are the shoes designed for that, but honestly, you could wear the MG4+ out with friends and no one would notice.

They’re also stylish enough that you might even get a few compliments in the process.

I’m a size 12, and these fit true to size for me.

Final Thoughts on the G/FORE MG4+

I honestly wasn’t expecting to like the G/FORE MG4+ shoes as much as I have. It’s got me excited to get out for more rounds with the other G/FORE shoes I’ve got in my office.

I review a lot of shoes for Breaking Eighty, but my default response when throwing shoes on for a round is to grab the Ecco C4.

I think those might be slightly more stable for an all-conditions golf shoe, but the MG4+ will absolutely be making it into the regular rotation. The massaging footbed was unique and more comfortable than expected, they’re waterproof, and frankly, are better looking than the “acquired taste” of the Eccos.

At $225 these are expensive golf shoes. But after spending time with them they look, feel, and perform like high-end golf shoes. So while I think it might be a little more reasonable to see these coming in sub $200, I also don’t think many people will be disappointed should they choose to spend the money.

Long story short, these shoes may be the gateway drug that has me digging into G/FORE a lot more in the coming months.

June 2024 – Long-Term Update: These Continue to Be Among My Favorite Golf Shoes

It’s been a little over a year since I did my initial G/FORE MG4+ review, and I still love these shoes as much – or more – as I did then.

They’re some of the best all-around golf shoes I’ve owned. They perform great in wet weather despite being spikeless shoes, and the massaging nubs continue to be one of my favorite features of any golf shoe out there.

Since I received these I’ve taken trips to play Oakmont, Merion, and Bandon Dunes. I brought these along with me for those bucket list golf course experiences, which says a lot about how much faith I have in them.

Highly recommend.

BUT, as of June 2024, G/FORE has rolled out the G/18. Which is kinda like a more fashion-foeard version of the MG4+.

And guess what?

It’s really good. So if you’ve been in the market for these, I’d check out my G/18 review as well, as they are definitely a good alternative option.

First Impressions of the Ecco S-Three Golf Shoes

Opening up the box to see the S-Three shoes I couldn’t help but think they looked a little familiar.

Ecco shoes have a distinct style, and these fit right into the mold.

For some, this will be a good (great) thing, and for others – maybe not. Ecco styling is a little polarizing, so if you haven’t loved previous shoes of theirs, these may not sway your opinion.

That said, they are a little more subdued than the Biom C4 shoes, and personally I like the look of them.

Material and build quality wise these are Ecco all the way. Extremely high-quality leather, durable soles – the S-Three both looks and feels like a high-end shoe.

How Do They Perform on the Course (and off?)

We’re in a world where “all day” golf shoes are increasingly becoming a thing.

Considering Ecco was the forerunner to the spikeless golf shoe market, I would have expected them to maybe jump into this trend a little bit harder.

I know there are absolutely people who would consider the S-Three all-day style shoes, and wear them off the course.

But for me? These feel more like golf shoes than anything else. Maybe it’s the styling or robust build quality – but this is one pair I just don’t see myself wearing day to day.

So then, how do they hold up on the golf course?

Generally speaking, great.

As with most Ecco spikeless models they are super comfortable right out of the gate.

One thing I did notice walking down the first fairway during my first round with them, was that the toebox on my left foot kept heavily creasing and kind of making a “pop” sound every time I walked.

Perhaps my sizing on this shoe was off, but I’ve had close to 10 pairs of size 46 (12) Eccos and it’s always been a spot-on fit.

It’s not a huge deal, but it is something I noticed.

Then I played golf, and I didn’t think about the shoes again until the 15th hole when one of my playing partners asked how I liked them.

“You know, I haven’t thought about them for a second since the first hole. I think that might be the best compliment I can give them.”

If you’re thinking about your golf shoes, something is probably wrong.

Unless it’s a unique pair like the G/FORE Gallivanters that inspire extra confidence every time you look down at them.

But generally, you just want them to work. You want them to be comfortable, stable, and blend into the background – which is exactly what the S-Three does.

However, I did notice that toebox again as soon as I started thinking about them.

But after two full rounds, these are perfectly solid golf shoes.

S-Three vs. BIom C4 vs. Biom H4: Which Should You Buy?

All three of these shoes are relatively similar.

The Biom C4 are the most comfortable.

The Biom H4 has the best durability and stability.

The S-Three is kind of a combination of both.

If you’re planning to use these shoes in all weather conditions and you want something that’s going to hold up? I’d probably go with the H4.

Alternatively, if you want something that feels like you’re walking on clouds, but still has solid support for a spikeless shoe – the C4 is the one for you.

But if you want something that’s right in between, and especially if you’re looking for an Ecco shoe you can wear off the course – then I’d go with the S-Three (even if I wouldn’t personally rock these out to dinner.)

My favorite of these are the C4, but honestly, they’re all very good.

And they’re close enough that, if you find a deal on one, or prefer the looks/styling of one model over the other – just go with the one you like.

Worth noting, the retail price on these is $220, but I’ve seen them closer to $165 recently at Golf Galaxy, so definitely shop around. At that price, these feel like a much better deal.

Ecco consistently makes excellent golf shoes, and the S-Three is no different.

I’ve had a handful of pairs that have been fine when jogging or in the gym, but none of those recently have actually gotten me excited.

To take it a step further, I haven’t had a pair that I’ve wanted to wear casually. So many of the latest running shoes have kind of felt like “dad shoes” or just haven’t fit my particular style.

When I heard that Payntr golf was coming out with a pair of training shoes, my initial thought was “oh that’s cool,” but I didn’t think much about it.

So I had a feeling that their new Trainer X 001 would perform well, but my experience with them has caught me off guard.

How so? Are they any good, and worth the high price tag of $180?

First Impressions of the Payntr Trainer X 001 Shoes

When I took these out of the box for the first time, my initial thought was “man, these look really good.”

One thing about Payntr golf shoes, is all of their models have a similar design language and aesthetic.

They’ve carried this over to the Trainers, which is a good thing.

And I actually like the way the Trainers look even more than I do the golf shoes.

They’re visually interesting, without being over the top.

The woven uppers look very high-end, but they’re not so technical looking as to keep you from wanting to wear them out and about.

Speaking of wearing them out and about, I’ve now worn them for 2 days, and had 3 people comment on them:

“Those shoes look great, what are they?”

“I really like those shoes.”

“What brand is that? They look good on you.”

These have honestly been the first training style shoe I’ve had in a long time that I’ve been excited about wearing on weekends around town.

Are the Payntr Trainers Comfortable?

This past weekend I wore these shoes nonstop over 2 very busy days.

From the beginning, they’ve been incredibly comfortable.

No break-in period or anything, you put them on, and they feel great.

But these shoes weren’t made just for wearing around town.

There’s a serious amount of tech that has gone into them to make them some of the most comfortable and best-performing training shoes on the market.

As is typical with Payntr, a lot of this comes in the form of very fancy bullet points.

Here are a few:

• Engineered woven jacquard upper weaves TPU thread for lateral support with nylon thread for lightweight flexibility. 
• Carbitex MonoFlex PROPULSION PLATE is stiff in one direction providing under foot protection and enhances stability. It is highly flexible in the opposite direction, flexing with your natural gait to maximize the efficiency of your movements. MonoFlex works to protect your feet and minimize over-bending to reduce fatigue.
• PMXGripLite rubber outsole with lightweight durability compound and tread design for multi-directional, multi-surface traction.
• PMXNitro foam midsole & footbed provides maximum energy return & ultimate under foot comfort

Got all of that?

The nitrogen-infused midsole is one of the latest features that’s been featured in some of Payntr’s newest golf shoes, and it feels great.

When running or even walking, the shoes feel slightly springy – like they’re doing more of the work for you than a traditional shoe.

In my experience, all of this technical talk results in a training shoe that allows you to do whatever it is you’re trying to throw at it.

This Story Sums Up My Thoughts on the New Payntr Training Shoes

I think the following story best illustrates how I feel about this shoe.

As someone who reviews shoes for a living, I have a lot of shoes. 

Frankly, if a pair gets stained or dirty, my reaction is usually just “oh well, I’ve got plenty more.”

Yesterday, my daughter had some chocolate that had started to melt. For some reason only a 3-year-old would understand, she took a big glob of it and wiped it all over the toe box of these shoes.

And since they have a fancy weaving, I looked at this and thought two things:

1. There’s no way this is going to come out
2. Immediate frustration, because I’d finally found a pair of training shoes that I love, which I could wear in just about any situation

The good news is that with a bit of soap and water, the chocolate came out quickly.

Sidenote, as this is one of the big downsides of this shoe. Especially in white, these easily show dirt. So getting some scotch guard or sneaker cleaner is a good idea.

All that to say, the more I wear these shoes, the more I want to wear these shoes – and I think this is the best compliment I can give them.

At $180, they aren’t cheap. But a lesson I’ve learned over the years is that you’re far better off buying nice things you love, than cheaper things that you bought just because they were cheap – not because you really liked them.

If you’re hesitant on these because you’ve never heard of Payntr, or because it’s their first foray into training shoes? Don’t be. 

Because if these shoes are any indication, this is just the beginning of a very special product line that’s going to make waves in the industry.

It’s always exciting when I pick up a new pair of Ecco golf shoes, because I know they’ll be with me for a long time.

6 years ago I got my first pair of Eccos – the Biom Hybrid 2s. They’ve seen well over 100 rounds, and I still wear them from time to time.

5 years ago it was the Ecco Cage Pro.

4 years ago, with the Biom Hybrid 3, I proclaimed it was the best golf shoe I’d ever owned.

I still play 25% of my rounds in that 4-year-old shoe – it’s that good.

I’m now 3 rounds into wearing the Ecco Biom C4, and you know what?

It’s phenomenal.

No seriously. It’s really, really good.

What makes it such a good golf shoe?

Let’s find out.

First Impressions of the Ecco Biom C4

Ecco shoes are always a little polarizing in the looks department. 

Some people love them, others not so much.

Personally, I’m somewhere in between. I like some of their models more than others, but was really pleased when they first showed off the C4, as I really like the way it looks. The color blocking is tastefully done and the pops of orange and blue on my “Concrete/Black” colorway is a nice touch.

As soon as you get them out of the box, you can feel the quality that Ecco brings. 

The leather is legitimately soft. Like it feels like it should be used for a handbag, rather than a pair of shoes. Ecco is always at the top when it comes to this.

This is my first pair of Ecco shoes that have vents in the soles, so that was one major thing that stood out to me. I like the way it looks, and we’ll talk about the performance below.

Overall, this is one of my favorite Eccos designs to date. I’ve already received some compliments about them on the course as well.

Ecco Biom C4 Performance

The Biom C4 is a little bit different than the last few pairs of Eccos I’ve owned. 

Ecco is the pioneer of spikeless golf shoes, and these obviously still fall into that camp. But more so than any Ecco shoe I’ve used, they feel more like traditional golf shoes – in a good way.

There’s a bit more stability, and traction was very good as well. It does this while maintaining the versatility of having a spikeless shoe.

On my recent trip to the Four Seasons Punta Mita, I was able to put on the shoes in the hotel room, hop in my shuttle to the course, play my round, come back, have lunch – all in these shoes.

It makes traveling with these shoes very handy.

One of the first things you notice about the shoe is the “exhaust grid,” as they call it. These vents allow air to flow under the sole, which is supposed to help keep your feet cool in hot conditions.

At the very least, it looks fancy, but given how comfortable these shoes are, I’m inclined to believe that it truly is functional as well. My feet have always stayed comfortable wearing them.

The MTN sole is the same found on the Biom H4 (this shoe is the true follow-up to the Biom Hybrid 3s I mentioned before. It features 3 zones to provide “stability, durability, and rotational support.”

And considering I have yet to slip once in these, the sole does a great job of inspiring confidence both walking the course and during your golf swing.

Are the Ecco Biom C4 Golf Shoes Comfortable?

To put it simply, these are the most comfortable golf shoes I’ve ever owned.

I expected them to lag a little bit behind my previous Biom 3s in the comfort department, due to being slightly beefier and more stable.

That’s absolutely not the case.

These things are an absolute joy to walk in.

The top of the shoe has some extra elasticity in the sock liner, which makes these shoes very easy to put on. I’ve loved the True Links Lux Sport as well – but I’ve found them to be a little bit harder to get my feet into.

It legit feels like I have pillows on my feet when walking the course in the C4s.

I’m honestly not sure what else to say about it, they’re unbelievably comfortable for a golf shoe – and they’ve stayed that way through my all of my rounds so far.

Ecco Biom C4 Durability 

One of my favorite things about these, and other Ecco shoes is the Gore-tex surrounds they have.

A lot of brands have their own names for their waterproof technology, but no name is more respected in this department than Gore-Tex.

Looking at the shoe, especially with it’s supple leather and air vents – you wouldn’t expect it to be overly waterproof.

Oh, but it is.

While I have yet to wear these during an exceedingly wet round, I have worn all of my other Eccos in wet weather, and they always leave me surprised with how dry my feet are afterward.

Ah, I should correct that. I used to always be surprised with how dry my feet were.  Now this is simply one of the joys to owning a pair of Eccos – you know you can count on fantastic water protection.

As for durability, the soles should last you a long time. They’ll wear down a bit if you do spend a lot of time walking on pavement off course with them – but it’s very durable. 

I have noticed that over time the leather and midsole can be prone to attracting dirt – perhaps more than other shoes.  But an occasional wet rag helps in this department.

To be honest, I think that’s my only real critique. 3 rounds in, the shoes already shoe minor signs of being worn and wearing in. A few small leather creases here, some smudges there.

If this is a concern for you, then I’d consider checking out the Ecco Biom H4 which is a bit more durable. The Biom G5 is as well, and is a good choice if you prefer spiked shoes.

But despite some of those surface level, everyday wear type things, this shoe will last you a very long time. 

Final Thoughts on the Ecco Biom C4 golf Shoes

I love this golf shoe. 

Occasionally I get products in to review that just leave me excited to go out and play golf. 

This is one of those products.

It looks good, it feels good, and it’s from a proven brand that year after year puts out extremely high-quality products.

If you’re looking for a premium golf shoe, and don’t mind paying the premium of price of $230, then you’ll be thrilled with the Biom C4.

Update March 2024: Still as good as ever

There have been so many great pairs of golf shoes that have come out over the last few years. G/FORE with their MG4+, Payntr with the X 005, TRUE with the Lux Hybrid, even the new Ecco S-Three – the list goes on.

I love and wear all of those shoes.

But still after all this time, the Ecco C4 continues to be the most comfortable pair of golf shoes I’ve ever owned. This past season I found myself wearing G/FORE more often, but the major reason for this is simply because my Ecco C4 shoes have over 100 rounds on them – and frankly have seen better days.

They’ve become my “off-season” shoes for playing in muddy or less desirable course conditions. And even as spikeless shoes, they’ve performed well in those conditions.

The looks still won’t be for everyone, but 3 years after their release, these are still among the best golf shoes ever made.

First Impressions of the G/FORE Gallivater G/LOCK Shoes

Before we go any further, we should establish what exactly is the Gallivanter G/LOCK?

It’s simple really, it’s a new for 2024 model that’s basically the original Gallivanter shoes with removable spikes and some new bold colorways.

My first impression of the Gallivanter G/LOCK shoes were “Yes!”

More of the same, in the best way possible.

The new G/LOCK versions of the Gallivanter are basically the exact same as the originals. They just trade out the built in spikes for removable Tour FlexPro spikes on the soles.

Out of the box, they look and feel just as high-end and well-built as the originals do.

I got mine in navy and the camo soles add a modern pop that fans of the G/FORE brand will likely dig.

It’s touches like this that set the Gallivanters apart from more traditional shoes like the Footjoy Dryjoys or Ecco Classic Hybrids.

The Pebbled leather elevates it over other G/FORE shoes, but the pops of color on the soles again, add a modern touch.

Overall, my first impressions are that these are wonderful.

G/FORE Gallivanter G/LOCK Performance

The thing that surprised me most about the original Gallivanters were how comfortable they are – because they don’t look comfortable. They look like pretty stiff classic tour shoes.

But fortunately, the fit is entirely modern.

While it will take a couple rounds to fully break in (unlike the new Gallivan2r shoes which are solid right out of the box), with each round they get more and more comfy.

While the original Gallivanters don’t have removable spikes, the spikes that are built in are surprisingly sharp and provide great traction.

The major downside is that those can wear down after a few dozen rounds leading to less traction and stability as time goes on.

With the G/LOCK shoes you get the best of both worlds. Traction on the same level as any tour shoes I’ve tested (the Tour FlexPro spikes are really good).

But then once they start to wear down, swap em out for a fresh set, and you’ve got a beautiful shoe that’s going to last year for years to come.

Another modern feature of these shoes is the massaging nubs on the insoles which are a G/FORE staple. This might seem weird if you’ve never worn them before, but once you do, you’ll appreciate how good they feel on your feet by the middle of the back nine.

Waterproofness is fantastic, and these shoes will keep you dry and stable in all but the worst of conditions.

Final Thoughts on the G/FORE Gallivanter G/LOCK

If you’re trying to decide which G/FORE shoes are for you, let me try and help.

The new G/LOCK shoes are wonderful, but they don’t necessarily feel that different to the original Gallivanters. So if it were me, I’d purchase whichever colorway I like best, and if it’s a toss-up, then go with the G/LOCK model for slightly better traction and longevity.

The new Gallivan2r shoes are great. But they’re more of a spikeless shoe, so traction isn’t quite on the same level, and the real pebbled leather of the G/LOCK shoes definitely feel more high end.

While the new G/FORE Gallivanter G/LOCK shoes aren’t as revolutionary feeling as the originals were, these still represent the best iteration of that shoe yet, and is a pair I’d highly recommend. Across the board, looks, comfort, and performance – this shoe has it all.
