What to Look for in a Fairway Wood?

What’s best for Rory is probably not going to be best for you.

• What loft do you need? Do you have trouble getting the ball up in the air? Is an easier-to-hit club more important than maximum distance? If this is you, consider a 5 wood or 7 wood rather than a 3 wood.
• Do you tend to slice the ball? Some fairway woods will be better than others in helping you compensate for swing flaws that lead to a severe slice or hook.
• What shaft type do you need? Choosing shafts can get overwhelming very quickly. But you should at least get an idea of whether you want steel or graphite, and what the stiffness should be. Graphite tends to be more forgiving, and stiff shafts should be reserved for better golfers with higher swing speeds.

Not because I don’t respect the Golden Bear. Quite the opposite. Jack Nicklaus is arguably the greatest to ever play the game, and his name deserves all the reverence it gets.

And it wasn’t because I don’t respect Stix. Again, totally opposite. They’ve legitimized what used to be the impossible prospect of a beginner set of golf clubs actually being of high enough quality to be taken seriously.

My hesitation came from a different place. I’d seen these clubs before.

Literally. I had.

Because when you strip away the fresh branding and iconic Golden Bear logo, what you’re left with is essentially a dressed-up version of the Stix Play Series, a set of clubs that Sean already reviewed here on Breaking Eighty.

So, when tasked with this review, I found myself wondering: What’s left to say? What can I offer that hasn’t already been covered, especially when we’re dealing with gear that, aside from some cosmetic tweaks, is basically the same under the hood?

Turns out, quite a bit.

Because this rebranding isn’t just about looks. It’s about positioning. And for the right golfer, that positioning might actually make all the difference.

Let me explain and maybe help you decide if the new Stix Nicklaus Collection is worth your consideration.

Rebranding the Beginner Experience

Let’s start with the obvious: The Nicklaus Collection is not a technological leap forward for Stix. It’s not a new generation of clubs. It is, functionally, the same DNA as the Play Series.

Meaning, with Stix, we’ve still got the OG Perform Series clubs that are generally for a more experienced golfer and include more customization options. And then we’ve got what used to be called the Play Series, a set tailored specifically for beginners, only now they’re calling it the Nicklaus Collection and have juiced up the look with a bunch of Golden Bear logos and Jack’s signature.

And that’s actually OK.

Because here’s the thing—Stix didn’t need to overhaul the Play Series. That line was already well-built, thoughtfully composed, and targeted at the true beginner and high-handicap player to great effect.

Sean has commented about the Play Series giving the new golfer literally everything they need to get into the game. And I agree. The Play Series blew away all of the other crap-by-comparison beginner sets.

Now, what Stix has done with the Nicklaus Collection is take that platform and wrap it in emotional appeal. Jack’s name brings heritage and confidence to a segment of golf gear that often feels like an afterthought. Beginner clubs tend to look cheap and feel worse. This set doesn’t.

So yes, this is a rebrand. But I think it’s a smart one. Because, for the right golfer, I think this set doesn’t just look better, it feels better. Not in your hands, necessarily (we’ll get to that), but in your head.

And for beginners, that matters.

On the other hand, there’s a type of beginner golfer for whom this whole change will be a total turnoff. For one thing, as time marches on, younger and likely beginner golfers are becoming more and more unfamiliar with the Nicklaus legend.

And the other thing is that with this rebrand, Stix has taken a set that was already “loud” visually and cranked the speaker to 11 with no shortage of in-your-face logos. So for shy golfers looking to avoid attention, they’re going to at least need to ditch the Nicklaus Collection-issued headcovers. But we’ll get to that.

What You Get with the Stix Nicklaus Collection

Before we get into how these clubs actually perform and a bit more about the overall Nicklaus-inspired aesthetic, let’s start with what comes in the bag. Because, yes, the bag is included. I’ll talk in a minute about the look and feel of that component.

The Nicklaus Collection is offered in three different configurations:

• Nicklaus Essentials Set (10 clubs) – $699
• Nicklaus Women’s Set (10 clubs) – $899
• Nicklaus Compete Set (14 clubs) – $1,499

For this review, I tested the Nicklaus Essentials Set, which includes:

• Driver
• 3 Wood
• 4 Hybrid
• 6-9 Irons
• Pitching Wedge
• 56-degree Wedge
• Putter

That’s 10 clubs designed to cover all the key distances and provide a full spectrum of gapping for newer players or anyone looking for a simplified setup.

Aesthetics: It’s Kind of a Lot of Golden Bear

I think to rock this bag and set of headcovers with confidence you’re going to have to love you some Jack Nicklaus. Because otherwise, man, the whole Golden Bear thing is going to be a bit much.

Let’s be real: Jack Nicklaus isn’t in the Stix design lab tweaking CG or bounce angles. His name is on this collection as a branding play, and Stix is definitely aiming to get the most of this licensing agreement. They definitely lean into the visual identity.

You get clean stainless steel irons with chrome-plated steel shafts (just like the Play Series) instead of the blacked-out look from the Perform Series. The driver, woods, and hybrid are the same sleek, modern profile.

But what’s different are the Nicklaus touches. The Golden Bear logo on the putter face, a signature and logo on each club shaft, the bear on each headcover and on both sides of the bag… Like, it’s a lot of Golden Bear.

I think some people are going to think it looks awesome, while others find it to be too much.

Personally, I’m most interested in the clubs themselves. If I’m playing this set, I might be opting for at least different headcovers and possibly an entirely different bag. But I’ve been playing golf for a long time, and I know what I like. A beginner may be completely fine with this and see it as a nice, organized look.

I’ll get into the club performance, but first, about the bag. It’s the same one you would have gotten with the Stix Play Series, only now with more gold and more bear. Which is to say that it’s a nice, functional bag. Since we first reviewed it with other Stix sets, we’ve found it to be better than we expected.

The zippers aren’t super robust. The pockets are minimal. The backpack shoulder straps aren’t incredibly well-padded. This isn’t a Vessel bag by any stretch. But it does the job. It’s lightweight and (assuming the aesthetics don’t bug you) a perfect first golf bag.

Out on the Course for a Club-by-Club Breakdown

Driver

Sean really liked the Play Series driver for its draw bias and found that it legitimately tamped down his wicked slice.

Me? I draw (often hook) the ball. And consequently, I’m not quite as psyched about this club. I did not hit it particularly well.

But for a beginner? It’s a 10.5-degree, simple, forgiving, confidence-inspiring-at-address driver. No adjustability here. No multi-material crown. No low-spin rocket launcher tech. Just a solid clubhead paired with a lightweight graphite shaft that does what it’s supposed to do: help you get the ball airborne and reasonably straight.

The distance is decent, launch is easy, and sound is more muted than metallic, which I prefer. You won’t be bragging about ball speed, but you won’t be dreading the tee shot either.

Fairway Woods and Hybrid

So you get a 3 wood and a 4 hybrid, which I think is a great combo for a beginner set. As you’d expect, the 3 wood is the tougher of the two to hit. But, relatively speaking, I actually found it pretty easy to get good results with a smooth, slower-tempo swing.

The 4 hybrid, in my opinion, is a star. Easy to launch, straight as anything, and versatile from the tee or turf.

If you’re a beginner, this might end up being your favorite club in the bag.

Irons (6-9, PW)

These stainless steel cavity backs are exactly what a newer golfer needs. Thick topline, generous sole width, and enough offset to help square the face. The steel shaft adds a nice bit of feedback and consistency you often don’t get in budget sets that go full graphite.

I actually really like these irons. No, they aren’t super buttery like a Mizuno. But they’re not clicky either. Good strikes feel stable, mishits don’t sting, and the distances are predictable.

Honestly, if these were your first irons when you got introduced to the game, you’d be playing clubs that are better than what Jack Nicklaus himself started with.

56-Degree Wedge

Basic but effective. There’s enough bounce to help you out of bunkers, and the wide sole keeps it friendly around the greens. Chances are, you won’t be opening it up for flop shots or trying to shape spinny pitches.

Putter

The same blade-style head from the original Stix lineup makes an appearance here, but with a few upgrades. The alignment aid is now a single, extended line (instead of the Stix logo), and the branding has been updated with Nicklaus details.

Performance-wise, it’s solid. The weight feels balanced, and it actually features a beautifully milled face. The roll is consistent.

Look, I’m not saying you’re going to throw your Scotty Cameron in the trash in favor of this thing. But, honestly, I could see even some seasoned golfers giving this putter a chance at winning a spot in their bag. It’s legit. Maybe even great, considering the price point.

Who These Clubs Are (and Aren’t) For

Let’s get this out of the way: the Nicklaus Collection is not for everyone.

That’s probably obvious. If you’re already carrying a single-digit handicap, working with a coach, or tweaking your swing path using a launch monitor, these probably aren’t the sticks for you. The Nicklaus set doesn’t have the workability or feedback an advanced player typically wants.

I see these clubs as right for the kind of golfer who’s buying a first or second set, doesn’t want to overthink gaps or shafts, plays a few times a month (or a few times a year), and just wants something that looks sharp, feels solid, and gets the ball in the air.

Because here’s the thing: If that’s you, you’re not going to find higher quality for a comparable price. You’re just not. Stix has got this beginner set thing on lockdown.

I’d also argue that there’s a pretty big sweet spot of potential buyers here. Parents buying for teenage kids. Partners buying a gift for a casual golfer. Retired folks getting back into the game. Golfers who are returning after a long layoff. I think a wide range of golfers would benefit from these.

I didn’t test the Nicklaus women’s version personally, but on paper, the same logic applies. What’s especially nice is that the women’s 10-club set includes two hybrids and two woods, which is exactly how most women’s sets should be built. More loft, more forgiveness, fewer long irons equals a smarter bag makeup.

Nicklaus vs. the Rest: Should You Buy ‘Em?

One of the biggest questions new golfers face is pretty simple: Where do I even start?

Do you go all-in with a set from a big brand like Callaway, TaylorMade, or Cobra, hoping to get that performance edge and long-term value?

Do you start scavenging through Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace trying to piece together something decent and affordable?

It’s a real decision. And, personally, I think the Stix Nicklaus set is the right answer for most beginners.

The problem with the big-brand boxed beginner sets is that, well, they often pretty much suck. Yes, you get a full setup, plus a bag and headcovers. But the quality is suspect. A lot of them have that very “starter kit” vibe.

Then you’ve got the used market route. For golf nerds, it can be a goldmine. If you’ve got time, patience, and enough knowledge to know what to look for, you can piece together an amazing set. But it’s not easy. It takes digging. It takes research. And if you’re new to the game, trying to figure out loft gaps, shaft flex, and lie angles? It’s overwhelming.

And that’s what makes the Nicklaus Collection a pretty compelling third option. It doesn’t pretend to be a tour-level setup. But it offers legitimate quality and performance. Seriously. If a beginner knew any better, they’d be stoked to be playing clubs this good.

As for the look, that might end up being polarizing. Maybe you’ll love it. Maybe you’ll hate it. My advice: Don’t let that be the deciding factor.

First of all, these aren’t clubs you’re meant to own forever. It’s temporary and a good proving set to see if you’re even going to stick with this golf thing.

Secondly, you can always swap out headcovers (or skip them altogether).

The bottom line is that the look shouldn’t be such a big deal that it stops you from getting in on a good thing.

And honestly, if the Golden Bear is a turn off? Go back to the traditional Stix Clubs.

Circling back to where we started. I said earlier that this rebranding isn’t about performance upgrades. It’s about positioning. And I think that matters.

When you’re new to the game, confidence is everything. Standing over the ball with clubs that feel legitimate is a bigger deal than people may realize. Add the name Nicklaus to that equation, and you’re suddenly part of something that feels a little more legit.

No, Jack didn’t design these clubs. But if his name on the bag helps a beginner feel like they belong on the course, that’s worth something. That’s the power of positioning. And, overall, I think Stix got it right.

Alright, so we’ve talked most forgiving irons. And we’ve talked longest irons. But what about when you want ’em both?

Well, let me tell you, when I tested PXG’s 0311XPs, I was blown away! Some golfers prefer to forgo driver or wood off the tee in favor of something they feel gives them more control. Today’s driving irons, or utility irons, give you that option. Typically designed to offer higher ball speeds and launch angles than traditional long irons, these clubs are usually available as either a 1 iron, 2 iron or 3 iron.

Takomo may be the best golf brand you’ve not yet heard about. But they are quickly turning heads as another direct-to-consumer option that’s offering quality clubs at affordable prices. And their irons in particular are sweet! This brand might not be a sleeper for long, but for now, they are an easy choice for most underrated.

We all dream of hitting bombs. Then reality sets in, and we’re generally relieved just to finally hit a fairway. So often, what starts as an optimistic dream turns to delusion and eventually frustration.

So, what’s the problem?

Well, for starters, we’re not all world-class athletes in our mid-20s or 30s with prodigious hand-eye coordination like the golfers we watch on TV.

The fact of the matter is that we’re all different. Our swings are our own and our physical (and mental) limitations are just as unique.

And yet still, even though golf club manufacturers have gotten much better at offering varieties to fit different needs, they are, on the whole, trying to sell us products as if we’re all exactly the same. These promises of more forgiveness, greater distance, and the like, tend to assume we all swing the club the same way.

Next thing you know, we’re trying to play the same driver as Rory McIlroy (TaylorMade Qi10), and we’re somehow disgusted when it just doesn’t seem to be working out.

The best chance for success in choosing a new driver is to find the tool that fits YOU, the individual. Forget this nonsense of trying to be a carbon copy of someone you can’t realistically replicate.

If I slice it and you hook it, should we be playing the same driver with the same settings?

If my swing speed is 90 miles per hour and you’re revving it up to 120, shouldn’t we use different clubs to keep the ball in play?

And what if I like a “thwack” while you prefer a “ting”? Shouldn’t we be hitting the driver that sounds the best to our individual ears and gives us the most confidence?

This list is about cutting through all that clutter to identify the best golf driver for YOU. These are 10 of the best products on the market, but there’s not one that fits every person. 

The point here is to make a case for which product is right for which type of golfer. Hopefully, you’ll find what resonates as the most important for your game.

Choosing the Correct Driver Shaft

The importance of selecting the right shaft can’t be overstated. 

Choosing the correct shaft flex, kick point and torque rating can tremendously affect your ball flight, spin and distance.

The same goes for choosing the correct club loft. To get the most distance and accuracy, you’ve got to find the loft that best fits your swing.

I’ve gained some serious yardage with the Callaway Elyte!

Granted, I’m rebuilding my swing and seeing some real progress and the fruits of those changes. But, still, in my testing, the numbers were undeniable. When I compared the Elyte with other drivers at the same testing session using the same swing, the results were clear: I hit it further with the Elyte.

I also think this is an extremely forgiving driver. It’s not enough to overcome a bad swing, of course, and I hit plenty of awful drives with the Elyte. But the driver feels great, and when I do hit one off-center, I’m often seeing results that aren’t as disastrous as maybe they felt like they could have been.

It’s not hard to get behind a Callaway as our best driver this year. They’ve made a lot of great cutting-edge drivers over the years.

But all of the manufacturers have their latest and greatest. So, while Callaway’s newest model is the driver that legitimately added both carry and roll-out distances for me without sacrificing accuracy, your best bet is to go get fit and figure out which brand is right for you.

Runner Up: TaylorMade Qi35 Max 

If I had to name a brand that I’ve gravitated to more than any other in testing drivers over time, it’d be TaylorMade. Their stuff is almost always in the running for best in my findings.

When setup correctly, TaylorMade drivers are always long, they’re always forgiving, and they always inspire confidence.

I reviewed last year’s Taylor Made Qi10 Max driver (similar to the one Rory uses) and ended up putting that one in my bag until I recently switched the Callaway Elyte. The Qi10 was kind of a trailblazer in that it was one of the first to hit the 10k MOI threshold that’s unlocked the next big breakthrough towards more forgiving drivers.

Now, with the Qi35 Max in 2025, TaylorMade has taken the 10k MOI approach even further in a way that increases forgiveness even more but that doesn’t sacrifice as much distance as previous 10k efforts.

So, we’re really getting to the sweet spot of what we all desperately want from a driver, something that’s going to go reasonably straight even off of slight mishits and something that’s going to go far when we do flush it.

In my review of the Tour Edge Exotics E725, I called it “voodoo magic.”

I’d never used a driver like it. Big banana slices that should have been way OB, were staying in bounds.

There’s a lot to consider when choosing a new driver.

For one, it’s almost certain to be the most expensive club in your golf bag. So, there’s your budget to take into account.

Best Hybrid Golf Club Value: Mizuno JPX923 Fli-Hi

This isn’t the longest club, it’s not necessarily the most forgiving and it’s not even the cheapest. But what makes it the best value is that it does everything exceptionally well, even if it doesn’t lead in any one category.

For starters, who doesn’t love having the name Mizuno in their bag? Hardcore golfers always seem to have an affinity for this brand and their renowned look and feel. So, if a particular brand gives you confidence, you could do much worse than seeing a Mizuno when you address the ball.

After all, they’re called the “scoring clubs” for a reason.

Today, we’re going to help you figure out the right wedges for your individual game.

These are our picks for the best golf wedges available in early 2025. As brands begin to release their new models later this year, we’ll update this post if any new candidates supplant the clubs on this list.

How To Choose the Best Golf Wedges

The first thing you need to determine is how many wedges you are going to carry? The rules of golf allow us to use up to 14 clubs for any given round. Most golfers, though certainly not all, will choose to carry at least two wedges. An off-the-rack set of irons, for example, typically includes a pitching wedge and a sand wedge.

But many golfers prefer to additionally carry a third and sometimes even fourth wedge. Deciding what’s right for you all comes down to envisioning the shots you intend to hit.

Are you the type of golfer who prefers to bump and run the ball along the ground? Maybe you’re the sort that handles a lot of your around-the-green work with your trusty 7 or 8 iron. In that case, you might be fine with a pitching wedge (typically between 44 and 48 degrees) for shots of a specific distance and a sand wedge (generally between 54 and 58 degrees) for shots out of the bunkers, leaving the rest of your chipping to a longer iron.

Conversely, you might like to have a full array of pitch shots available to you so that you can fly the ball in the air and land it softly on the green. You may find that the gap between how far you can hit your pitching wedge and sand wedge is too wide. In that scenario, a “gap” wedge of around 50 to 52 degrees could be incredibly useful.

And then there are those golfers who want to hit the super flop shot, where the ball goes exceedingly high in the air and has the best chance to stop on a dime upon landing on the green. Lob wedges, as they’re called, are often very difficult to hit well consistently for many amateurs. But if you’ve got the game to pull it off, this tool can become almost like a magic wand in helping you get up and down.

Understanding terms related to wedges can get really confusing if you aren’t a gearhead, so let’s try and simplify them:

• Loft – It’s likely that your set of irons will include a pitching wedge and sand wedge. Determine the lofts of those clubs and how far you hit each. Then look for a loft and resulting distance that’s in between those numbers. That’s your “gap” wedge. For lob shots, you’ll want a loft that’s higher than your sand wedge, likely something around 60 degrees.

• Shaft – This is a less critical component with wedges than with driver, fairway woods, hybrids and irons. That said, consistency in a set of golf clubs is always favorable. The general advice here is to match the shaft type and flex of your irons when choosing your wedges.

• Bounce – Bounce is the sole angle that’s created between the leading edge and trailing edge of your wedge. In effect, it helps to prevent the leading edge of the club from digging into the turf. Bounce angle is measured in degrees. A wedge with a higher bounce angle, say 14 degrees, will likely glide through the turf without digging in the way a lower-bounce wedge would. Sole width is another factor in bounce. As a rule of thumb, the steeper your swing, the more bounce you need. If you typically sweep the ball off the ground, you may need very little bounce.

It’s important to understand that, more than any of your irons, the grooves of your wedges need to be sharp. In order to get the ball to behave predictably and repeatedly when you hit a certain shot, the grip of those grooves has to be performing optimally. That’s why, for serious players, wedges are often replaced multiple times between full sets of irons.

Final Thoughts on Finding the Right Wedges for Your Game

If your short game is solid, you’ll always have a chance to post good scores. On any given hole, being able to get up and down can erase the damage you may have done off the tee or on your approach shot.

And because chipping and pitching require creativity, touch and feel just as much if not more than athleticism, you can be a great wedge player without being a great athlete. For all of the intimidation of a brutally long hole, a forced carry over water into the wind, or a short-sided chip shot, more often than not it’s the final few feet on the putting green that have the biggest impact on a golfer’s scorecard.

An otherwise skilled player can be rendered entirely noncompetitive if they can’t putt.

And conversely, a golfer who plods around the course hitting nothing but duffs and wormburners but who regularly catches fire with the flatstick can score far better than the eye test would ever predict.

There’s a reason there are enough cliche catch phrases having to do with putting to fill this entire post (don’t worry, we’ll spare you). It’s because putting is as important — or, depending on who you ask, more important — than any other part of the game.

Generally speaking, if you’re going to score your best, you’re going to have to putt your best.

And to putt your best, you’re going to need the best putter for your stroke.

So, why is the putter so often the last club that comes to mind when a golfer thinks of upgrading equipment? How many golfers do you know who have played the same putter for more than a decade even when it’s obvious that they’re not great putters? And how many of those same golfers buy a new driver every couple of years?

It seems that because the putter requires the smallest stroke, somehow many golfers don’t think there’s much of a difference between one model and another.

But that’s ridiculous. Manufacturers and designers are continuously refining their approach to making putters, leveraging technology advancements and tweaking weighting and dimensions to make improvements just as they are with all of the other clubs in the bag.

Best Putter Value: Stix Compete Putter

When I reviewed the full Stix golf clubs set, one of the very first things that impressed me was the putter. In fact, I drained a 5-footer for birdie the very first time I rolled the rock with this thing. It made such an impression on me that I kept the Stix putter in my daily bag even after I’d moved on from using the rest of their clubs. So, yeah, I really like this putter.

Recently though, they gave this putter an upgrade. Better grip, higher end fit and finish, and increased feel.

The result is the Stix Compete Putter, which comes in 3 different styles.

At $155, it’s a little bit more than the original, but is still less than half the price of many of the putters listed in this post.

If you’re looking for a high-end putter, without the high end price. This is definitely one to consider.

Also, the previous putter that came with the box set, can currently be had for just $64 – a total steal – but I doubt that will last long.

Most Underrated Putter: Inesis High M.O.I. Putter

There are now several direct-to-consumer golf club manufacturers that, by cutting out the middle retailer, can save consumers money. Not all of these brands are making quality clubs, but the Inesis High M.O.I. is a product that’s worth a look for golfers who want to save some money on a really forgiving putter.

M.O.I., or “moment of inertia” is an indicator of a putter’s forgiveness. A higher M.O.I., which in the case of the Inesis putter is achieved with perimeter weighting, helps the putter to stay on line throughout a pendulum-type stroke. It also stabilizes the face through impact, meaning straighter rolls and better distance control even on slight mishits.

This is another contender for the Most Forgiving Putter category, and like the TaylorMade Spider GTX and Odyssey 2-Ball Eleven Triple Track, the head is considerably larger than a traditional blade or even mallet. Best Toe Hang Putter: Cleveland HB SOFT Milled 4

If your putting stroke includes a bit of an arc, where you open and close the putter face during your stroke instead of bringing it straight back and through, you’ll likely benefit from some extra weight in the toe of the putter. And this toe hang option gives you a lot of bang for your buck.

The milling process on putter faces, which helps to provide great feedback and distance and speed control, often constitutes one of the biggest manufacturer costs. But Cleveland has developed a more affordable milling process that seems to be competing quite adequately with more expensive models.

What To Look For in a Golf Putter

First and foremost, putting is personal. It’s about touch and feel as much as it is about mechanics. That’s why the most athletic golfer isn’t always the best putter. And it’s why the putter is the game’s great equalizer.

When choosing the best putter for your game, it all comes down to what looks right to your eye and what feels right to your stroke. Here are some of the most important things to consider:

• Head. There are two basic types of putter head: blade and mallet. A blade, or what you might think of as a traditional style, is a simple, straight design. There is not too much to the clubhead beyond the face of the club. A mallet style putter, on the other hand, features a larger clubhead that may extend several inches beyond the putter face. Blades tend to be lighter and to many golfers look more natural. But some golfers prefer the added heft of a mallet, finding that it promotes a more consistent stroke that’s not as handsy or wristy. If you struggle with keeping the putter head steady in your stroke, a mallet may be best for you.

• Balance. Where the weight is positioned in a putter will have a major impact on how consistently you can contact the ball in the center of the putter face. A toe hang putter that has more weight placed in the toe of the club may favor golfers with more arc in their stroke. A face balanced putter’s center of gravity is directly below the axis of the shaft. This type of weight distribution generally favors a stroke that is more straight back and through.

• Alignment. Many putters feature some kind of means of helping you line up the putter face so that it’s pointing at the intended target. On a lot of putters, there’s a simple line in the center of the clubhead that helps you line up with the center of the ball so that a correct stroke will start the ball on target. Other putters include a line that is perpendicular to the target. Then there are those putters that use an open space or a series of circles to help alignment. And some putters don’t have any alignment aids.

• Face. There are two main putter face types: an all-metal face or one with an insert in the center that’s made of different material than the rest of the face. Even within these two main types, there is a tremendous range of materials and milling that promote different feels and sounds. The right face is the one that gives you the audible feedback that sounds right to your ears coupled with the right feeling that’s going to help you judge whether you’ve hit the ball with the correct amount of force.

• Length. Most putters off the rack are between 33 and 35 inches in length. But you of course can find them both shorter and longer. Even with anchoring no longer allowed, some golfers still prefer the counterweight feeling that a longer putter gives them. Others feel more in control with a shorter shaft that keeps their hands lower. Generally, you’ll want to choose a putter length that fits your posture, allowing you to keep your eyes over the ball while the sole of the putter lays flat on the ground.

• Grip size. Skinny, fat or somewhere in between — nowadays, you’ve got a full range of putter grip sizes from which to choose. To put it simply, the skinnier your grip, the more your smaller muscles like those in your fingers and wrists will be engaged. A thicker grip is intended to remove those fine-touch muscles so that the stroke is driven more with the shoulders. This decision is a little less critical because you can always change your grip if you think a different style might fit you better.

For each of the above criteria, there’s no one right answer. As we said, putting is personal. In the case of the full golf swing, say with the driver, there are laws of physics that will dictate the right fit for a specific swing speed and club path. Those things do come into play with putters, too. But on the whole, finding the right fit is much more about what looks, feels and sounds the best to each individual.

Now that we’ve stated the obvious — that putting is critical to shooting your best scores —  hopefully you’ll have a bit more insight into which one of these putters is best for your golf game.

But one thing to keep in mind? You may be better off buying a putting mat and actually practicing, than simply buying a new putter

And I’ve primarily been gaming them ever since.

A couple months ago, that changed when I went in and did a fitting for the new PXG 0311 Gen 7 irons.

The process was super smooth, and when compared to the O311p or new Black Ops, the results were clear, the best PXG Irons for my game were the Gen 7 0311xp.

But do they live up to expectations? 

I’ve now played 7 full rounds of golf with these new irons, and had numerous range sessions – so I have a pretty good sense of how they perform.

Are they the most forgiving irons ever? Let’s find out.

First Impressions of the PXG 0311xp Gen 7

Out of the box, I personally really like the way the 0311 Gen 7 irons look. 

The perimeter screws that PXG has been known for are gone, and in its place is a large titanium weight screw that I personally really like the look of. It certainly sets it apart from any other irons out there, and is also functional in the process.

I got fit for the 0311xp with the Mitsubishi MMT Taper 105 stiff shafts.

I think the Mitsubishi shafts look really good with these, and compliment the irons well.

Where I’m not as much of a fan of the look is seeing them in the bag. The XP model is definitely leaning a little bit more towards game-improvement when compared to the P models, and as such they have a wider sole than I’m used to seeing – which I don’t love the look of.

Fortunately, at address you don’t notice this as much. Looking down at them, the irons are slimmer than I expected and definitely help to evoke a sense of confidence when preparing for your shot.

While these won’t be for everyone from an aesthetic standpoint, I think more people than not will really enjoy the updated look of the Gen 7 irons.

How Do the 0311xp Irons Feel?

I’ve loved my Mizuno irons, but the reality is that my game has regressed a little bit as of late. When I’m playing well, those irons feel wonderful. But any mishits not only lose distance, they also slice. Any they certainly don’t fell good in the process.

After over half a dozen rounds with the PXG clubs, the biggest improvement I’ve noticed is forgiveness. Off the heel, off the toe – the ball still goes much further than it ever did when I misthit my Mizunos. And it stays straighter too.

This is no doubt in part due to the redesign which added internal tungsten weights to the interior, increasing MOI, and thus, forgiveness.

From a feel perspective, it’s a little bit more of a mixed bag.

The bad shots, don’t feel nearly as good as the bad shots with my old clubs.

Alternatively, the good shots don’t feel quite as buttery and solid either.

The clubs make a nice sound, but there’s a very slight hollow feeling you get, that I typically see in-game improvement clubs. Nothing dramatic at all, just a little hint of it. 

For what it’s worth PXG does not refer to these as game-improvement irons – that title is reserved for the new Black Ops line. They consider these “Players Distance” irons.

These feel like a good middle ground between the 0311p which is definitely going to provide more workability, control, and feel for the better player – at the expense of some of the forgiveness that these provide.

And that forgiveness? It’s hands down the best part of these clubs. I went out and shot an 86 at Torrey Pines, and more recently an 83 at Ghost Creek with far from my best stuff.

Some of that is a function of my new LAB putter which has been fantastic, but my iron play is more consistent than it has been previously.

The long irons in particular have gone far and straight. I can’t remember the last time I’ve consistently had so many 4 irons at or over 200 yards – it’s been very nice to see.

Speaking of Distance…

These are definitely longer than my old clubs.

I think there are 3 main reasons for this.

The first is the obvious answer that comes to mind when companies make dramatic distance gains: stronger lofts. And the loft on these is a little bit stronger than the stock numbers on my old clubs – so you’d expect to see some distance.

The second, is increased technology. My Mizuno clubs are going on 7 years old now. Year over year, technology improvements are often nothing more than marketing. But in 7 years, especially coming from a company as committed to technology as PXG, there are some big enhancements.

Notably with their “Quantum Core” tech which helps reduce core mass, and redistribute weight. As well as the new face design which is the thinnest PXG has ever made. Both these help with ball speed, distance, and forgiveness.

The third reason is the shafts being a little bit lighter than my old ones, at 105g vs 110. That small weight reduction has improved my clubhead speed by 1-2mph on average, and that alone is enough to help add noticeable distance.

Combine it all, and these irons are long. While I was down in Georgia playing the new Richland course at Reynolds, I had multiple people comment “are you sure you know your iron distances?” after blasting shots over the green.

To which I’d reply “No, I definitely don’t. At least not yet!”

Control and Feel

For all the gains in distance, I do feel like they’ve come at the expense of control and accuracy.

When I’m dialed with my Mizunos, I play like I’m a mid-single digit from the fairway.

With the 0311xp, I haven’t quite found that same level of control. Forgiveness, yes. Distance, yes.

But especially with my short irons and wedges, I don’t feel like I’ve been quite as dialed, which has led to approaches being further from the pin than I’d like, or in many cases, being just off the green entirely.

Obviously part of that just comes down to me being an average golfer. But there’s a reason better players play irons that provide better control.

That said, getting these to launch high and spin is incredibly easy. The number of approaches on the green I’ve hit where you see a ball mark, and the ball is 3 feet in front of it is at an all-time high.

My slice has also been tempered a bit with these clubs, but they don’t seem to have quite the dramatic draw bias that you see in Stix Clubs – which make these a little more well-rounded for more types of golfers.

I know as I get even more familiar with these PXG irons, I’m going to grow more confident with them and that approach consistency will improve. But as with any clubs, you always have to sacrifice something, and in the case of the XP over the P model –  I think it’s in feel and control that you have to give a little.

Final Thoughts on the PXG 0311xp Irons

They aren’t the cheapest irons out there at $229/each. I think they’re worth the price if distance and forgiveness are paramount. PXG has always been a premium brand, and these clubs are no different.

These are among the most forgiving and longest irons on the market.

Yes, this does come at the moderate expense of control, but if you’re good enough to be thinking about that – then you may want to consider the 0311p models anyway.

For where I’m at right now, that’s a tradeoff I’m more than happy to make. Being able to hit it further, more consistently is what I’m looking for in my game – and these absolutely deliver.

What is Lie Angle Balanced Technology?

The essence of Lie Angle Balanced Technology is to create a putter that minimizes torque during the putting stroke, ensuring that the face remains square at impact.

This means that no matter how inconsistent your stroke may be, the putter is designed to keep the ball on the intended line. For those who struggle with putting consistency (like me), this is a game-changer, especially when it comes to actually holing shorter putts.

First Impressions of the LAB DF3 Putter

At first glance, the LAB DF3 is a significant evolution from its predecessor, the DF 2.1. While the original design was often deemed “weird,” the DF3 offers a more refined and user-friendly aesthetic.

The quality reflects its price point of $449, and all of their putters are handmade and balanced in Creswell, Oregon.

Additionally, the head cover is robust and well-designed, adding an extra touch of luxury to the overall package. 

Overall, this thing feels every bit of its price point, and is one of the most premium feeling clubs I’ve used to date.

Does it Actually Work?

The first thing I noticed when starting to roll putts with the DF3 is just how easy the setup is. Despite golfing for the last 20 years, I still feel inconsistent with many aspects of my setup over putts.

Sometimes I’m more bent over than others, sometimes I’m closer to the ball – I’m always trying to find the perfect setup.

With the DF3, this is all done for you. You get the putter flush to the green and then stand in a natural position from there. Just getting consistent with my setup, has made a big difference in my confidence. 

So the theory is that no matter what you do with the stroke, the putter face is square at impact. 

Meaning, as long as you’re setup with the right line, it should go exactly where you want it to. Make sure to watch the video above to see the DF3 in action.

This is the fundamental difference between a LAB and say a Stix Compete, a Scotty Cameron, or essentially any other putter released in the last 50 years.

And you know what? That’s actually what it does.

It takes a little bit of getting used to the unique design of the putter, but after 3 rounds with it, I’m holing significantly more putts from 10 feet and shorter.

That’s where the quick magic of this thing lies. Short, straight putts that you often might push or pull due to nerves, now go where you want them to.

It’s pretty insane, actually.

Where I’ve struggled a bit more is with longer putts and distance control. I still haven’t fully dialed that in yet. But this isn’t a fault of the putter itself, this is just me needing to get used to a new club after predominantly using the same putter for the past 10 years.

Final Thoughts on the LAB DF3

I expected to like the DF3, simply because so many friends have raved about it.

But it’s one of those clubs. you kind of need to experience for yourself.

Honestly? It won’t be for everyone. It’s a unique look and setup, and while I adjusted pretty quickly – it may take longer for others.

There’s also no doubt, that most golfers aren’t looking to spend upwards of $500 on a putter. That’s a lot of money, and will be a turn-off for the majority of golfers.

But if you’re looking for what might be the most significant evolution in golf club technology and ideology – the LAB DF3 may be exactly what you’re looking for.

I’ll be keeping this in my bag for the foreseeable future, and I’ll update this review as I get more acquainted with it, and after I review other L.A.B. putters for comparisons. 

But so far? The hype is real.
