I mean, all you really want is to get a distance to the pin as quickly as possible, right? How many different features can you add? Why is one rangefinder $100 and another is $600?

Well, it’s pretty amazing how many different nuances there are. And the good news is that depending on what you’re looking for, you may not need to spend a ton of money to get a device that works great.

I’ve tested every single one of these rangefinders. I’ve played at least 3 rounds with each one, and in most cases many more. There’s likely not another person on the planet who has so much experience with all of these different brands and products.

My goal with this post is to help you find the right rangefinder for your needs and budget. I don’t care which one you pick, or if you buy one at all. I just want you to have the best information you can, based on my hundreds of hours of testing.

I update this list every time there’s a new product worth adding (or removing).

But let’s not waste any more time, and jump right into it.

Best for Most People: Voice Caddie TL1

The Voice Caddie TL1 is one of the best all-around rangefinders I’ve ever used. When I first reviewed it, it cost $449.

At that price, there’s a lot of stiff competition.

But then they dropped the price to $349.

And then they dropped it again to $280 just for Breaking Eighty readers. 

This device is fast, accurate, has a dual color OLED screen (rare), a magnet, and excellent build quality.

At this price, I think this is the best rangefinder value currently on the market.

My Favorite GPS Rangefinder: Precision Pro Titan Elite

The new Precision Pro Titan Elite essentially fixed all the things that were wrong with both the NX10 and their GPS-enabled R1 – and combined them into a new device.

The Titan Elite is hands down the best rangefinder Precision Pro has ever made and it’s one of my favorites I’ve ever used.

It’s waterproof and dustproof, very well constructed, fast and accurate, has great optics – oh, and it has GPS distances built into it.

I’ve been extremely pleased with how seamless the GPS works, and if you don’t want to use those high-tech features? It’s still an excellent rangefinder in its own right.

The downsides are that it’s only a 6x magnification, there’s no dual color display, and its not compatible with Android phones yet. But I think these are going to be worthy tradeoffs for a lot of people, considering this device performs as well or better than products that are far more expensive.

It may not be for everyone, but when it comes to value, performance, and features – I think the Titan Elite is hard to beat right now.

Money is No Object: Bushnell Pro X3

Last year, Bushnell released the Pro X3 as their flagship rangefinder – and it’s one of the very best rangefinders we’ve ever tested.

This year, they released a follow-up to it: The Pro X3+. 

It’s essentially the same device, but it adds real-time wind data built into the viewfinder – the first device ever to do so. 

Everything about it is great: build quality, optics, speed, and accuracy are all best in class.

Personally, I don’t love the new wind feature. It’s cool, yes, but not for the added hassle of pairing it with the Bushnell app.

That said, even without the wind, this is the best all-around rangefinder on the market. 

And it better be at $600. So if money is no object? Go for it, this is as good as it gets. But just know that you don’t need to spend anywhere near this much to get a reliable rangefinder that’s enjoyable to use.

Best Hybrid Rangefinder: VoiceCaddie SL3

The retail price on a Voice Caddie SL3 is steep at $599. 

But considering it’s got one of the best, most accurate lasers I’ve tested (the same as the TL1), and has a built in external screen with GPS data – with no subscription? 

Some will argue it’s the best rangefinder out there (and it’s certainly one of the best-looking).

The good news is you won’t need to pay anywhere close to retail if you’re interested in picking one of these up.

Most Accurate: Cobalt Q6 Slope

The Cobalt Q6 Slope is one of the most underrated rangefinders in golf.

I’ve given it my “most accurate” title for two reasons:

1. It gives consistent results down to the 1/10th of a yard. No one needs that amount of precision, and most devices that go down to the 1/10th bounce around. The Q6 does not. If it reads 100.4, it’ll keep reading 100.4
2. Its flag lock vibration feature is the best I’ve used. It really only vibrates when it’s locked on.

These two things combined, make me have more confidence in the accuracy of the numbers when compared to any other device I’ve used.

And for what it’s worth, I’ve used this rangefinder for my personal use more than any other. 

The two drawbacks? There’s no magnet, and you can’t get actual yardage, and slope-adjusted yardage at the same time, you’ll need to flip a switch to see each of them.

This is still one of my all-time favorites, and worth considering, and if you don’t care about fluff and just want something fast, accurate, and well-built – this is the one to get.

Best for Shaky Hands: Nikon Coolshot ProII Stabilized

Despite having a bit of a tongue-twister of a name, I was pleasantly surprised by how good this device is.

Not that I should have been. After all, Nikon has spent decades building their reputation for having extremely high-quality glass in their lenses.

Fortunately, a lot of that tech and reputation has transferred well into the golf rangefinder market.

Optical quality is usually the biggest differentiator between a cheap rangefinder and an expensive one. And I can safely say that the ProII rangefinder has some of the best glass I’ve ever seen in a rangefinder. Everything looks crystal clear.

But in the 4 years since this was released, many competitors have caught up on optics.

What others haven’t done, is provide image stabilization. Nikon added the same tech they use in their image-stabilized camera lenses to make it easier to lock onto the flag. So if you have shaky hands or have struggled to use a rangefinder in the past? 

This is definitely one I’d recommend.

Most High-Tech: Garmin Approach Z82

The Garmin Approach Z82 is unlike any other rangefinder on the market.

For starters, it doesn’t have an optical viewfinder.

Rather, this GPS rangefinder has a video screen that gives you all kinds of additional information overlayed on your view.

Want to know distances to the front back and center of the green, along with your pin reading? It does that.

Want to know what direction and speed the wind is blowing? No problem.

Want accurate distances to every single hazard on the course? Yep, it does that too.

Oh, and want a GPS locating system, so that you never lose your rangefinder again? The Z82 has got you covered.

That isn’t to say this rangefinder isn’t without its drawbacks, but if you’re looking for the most high-tech and arguably feature-heavy rangefinder on the market? This may just be for you.

Best Cart Path Only: Voice Caddie Laser Fit

This is one of my biggest surprises of the past year.

Not only is it the most compact rangefinder to make this list, but it’s also the only one that has triangulation.

If you’re playing cart path only, you can shoot the ball, then shoot the flag, and it will give you the distance between the two.

This means you don’t need to carry multiple clubs, or need to walk back and forth from the fairway just to get yardages if you play a lot of cart golf.

And the fact it does this and you can pick it up for $180? It makes it one of the very best values on this list.

The downside? For being a “cart path” rangefinder, there’s no built-in magnet.

Best Under $150: Shot Scope Pro L2

I’ve been getting a lot of requests to review and recommend truly cheap rangefinders.

The problem with most of them is that they’re cheap for a reason.

The Shot Scope Pro L2 is what I’d call a “fair” rangefinder. It’s ok. It’s fine.

At $149.99 the Shot Scope Pro L2 falls into the “cheap” category. With the “BREAKINGEIGHTY” code it gets even cheaper as it drops down 15% to $127.49.

And at that price, you can’t be too picky. 

But the build quality and design of it is great. It has both slope compensation and a built-in magnet. Maybe most importantly, it’s from a company that I know cares about their customers – so you’re going to get good support should things go sideways.

For all those reasons, as long as you’re ok with somewhat less-than-reliable speed and accuracy, I think this is the best rangefinder under $150.

Best for Garmin Watch Users: Garmin Z30

Garmin’s newest rangefinder is awesome, for a very specific person.

Unlike its more expensive sibling the Z82, it’s a traditional rangefinder with traditional optics. But, it has built-in GPS. And instead of just giving you stock green distances, when you shoot the pin, it will tell you exactly how far the pin is to the front and back of the green. 

Pretty cool.

But where this really shines is when you pair it with a Garmin GPS Golf Watch. It will automatically send that data to your watch, so the GPS distances on your watch adjust in real-time. 

It’s very cool tech, and if you use a Garmin golf watch, I’d give this serious consideration.

If you don’t however, then I’d probably stick with the Precision Pro Titan Elite for a GPS rangefinder.

What to Look For in a Golf Rangefinder?

Everyone is going to be looking for something a little bit different, and it really comes down to a combination of 3 things:

• Price
• Performance
• Features

Any of the rangefinders on this list will do the job of giving you distances. But some will do it faster and more reliably. Some will have extra features, that while not always essential, can make for a more enjoyable experience.

Some questions to ask yourself before deciding on the best fit for you:

• What is your budget?
• How long do you plan to have this?
• Do you want a slope feature? This will give you a second “plays like” distance number that accounts for the flag being uphill or downhill.
• Will you be using it in tournaments?
• Is feel and quality more important, or price?
• Do you niche features like GPS or image stabilization?

If you have answers to these questions, it will narrow your choices down considerably.

One other question to ask, is “Do you even really need a golf rangefinder?”

There are other options that may be a better fit. Specifically, this could be a GPS golf watch or shot tracking sensors with GPS built into the app.

But lately? Things have gotten a lot more competitive.

Brands like Voice Caddie, Precision Pro, and Cobalt have been cranking out devices that are just as fast, just as smart, and oftentimes just a better value. For the first time in a long time, it felt like Bushnell was starting to fall behind.

So when they dropped the A1-Slope, their first compact rangefinder, I was definitely curious. It’s smaller, cheaper (relatively speaking), and includes slope functionality at under $300. That’s new ground for Bushnell.

The big question: is this a sign of Bushnell getting scrappy again? Or just a safe play to check a box?

After spending some time with it, I’d say this: the A1-Slope doesn’t shake up the category, but it does do exactly what Bushnell does best—keep things simple, reliable, and confidence-inspiring.

Let’s take a closer look.

First Impressions of the Bushnell A1-Slope

Right out of the box, the A1-Slope makes one thing clear: this is not your typical Bushnell. It’s small! Not tiny like the Voice Caddie Laser Fit, but noticeably more compact than the Tour V6/V6 Shift, the Pro X3/X3+, or their new Tour Hybrid model.

And it’s not just the size that’s different.

This is also:

• Bushnell’s first rangefinder with a rechargeable battery (USB-C)
• The cheapest slope-enabled Bushnell ever released at $299
• The first with a removable “magnetic skin” for dual-use flexibility

So yeah, this isn’t a scaled-down clone. It’s a fresh take for the brand. And while it might not blow your mind with features, the A1-Slope brings just enough newness to stand out in the emerging compact rangefinder market.

So where exactly does the A1-Slope sit in the Bushnell family tree? Let’s take a quick look.

Where the A1-Slope Fits in the Bushnell Lineup

The A1-Slope carves out its own unique lane as Bushnell’s first real foray into compact territory. But how does it actually compare to the rest of the Bushnell family?

Tour V6/V6 Shift vs. A1-Slope

For years, the Tour V line has been Bushnell’s workhorse. The standard V6 (also $300) is larger, uses a replaceable battery, and skips slope altogether. Unless you pay up for the V6 Shift, which bumps the price to $399.

The V6 is classic and built to take a beating. You’ll definitely notice the difference in both size and feel if you switch to the A1-Slope.

Pro X3/X3+ vs. A1-Slope

Then there’s Bushnell’s flagship, the Pro X3. This is the “money is no object” device, loaded with features like environmental “Elements” (altitude and temp), dual-display color toggles, and arguably the best optics in golf.

The Pro X3+ can also interact with an app and your Bushnell or Foresight golf launch monitor to give you club recommendations based on your launch monitor data. It’s a very cutting-edge feature.

But with the Pro X3+ costing $600, or twice as much as the A1-Slope, it’s honestly overkill for most weekend golfers.

Tour Hybrid vs. A1-Slope

If you want GPS distances plus laser accuracy, Bushnell’s got the Tour Hybrid for $499.99. In addition to being more expensive, it’s bigger, heavier, and not nearly as streamlined in the pocket or on a walk as the A1-Slope.

Bottom line: The A1-Slope is the smallest, simplest, and most affordable slope model in the Bushnell line. If you want a “set it and forget it” Bushnell with slope and don’t care about the latest bells and whistles and don’t mind, or even prefer, the smaller size, the A1-Slope makes sense.

Solid Design and Feel, but Not Quite Premium

Bushnell nailed the build quality for its size. The device feels sturdy in hand, and even without the outer skin, it doesn’t feel like it’s going to break if you toss it in your bag.

The rubberized magnetic sleeve adds a touch of grip and a ton of cart-mount convenience, thanks to Bushnell’s signature BITE magnet.

But it’s not as bombproof as something like the Precision Pro Titan Slope, which comes in at $269.99. That thing is built like a tank, fully waterproof, and honestly feels like it could survive a drop from a cart onto concrete.

The A1-Slope? Durable, yes. But not invincible. Still, for a compact rangefinder, the A1 feels solidly built and very “Bushnell”.” And that counts for a lot.

Optics and Display: Clear and Fast

If you’ve used any Bushnell in the past five years, you’ll feel right at home with the A1-Slope’s viewfinder. It features:

• 6x magnification
• A bright, sharp display
• Bushnell’s PinSeeker JOLT for flag lock confirmation

The A1-Slope doesn’t include an OLED display like the Voice Caddie TL1, which you can pick up for slightly less. And you can’t toggle between red and black like the Pro X3. But the clarity is excellent, the yardages pop, and most importantly, it’s fast.

Lock-on speed is right in line with the Tour V6. Not quite Pro X3-level snappy, but certainly in the “reliable and responsive” tier.

And the JOLT feedback is strong and satisfying, exactly what you want when trying to confirm you’ve grabbed the pin and not a tree behind it.

Is the Rechargeable Battery a Blessing or a Burden?

The A1-Slope ditches the traditional CR2 battery in favor of a built-in USB-C rechargeable battery. On paper, this is great. Fewer trips to the store, less waste, and plenty of power (Bushnell claims over 3,000 clicks per charge).

But I’ll be honest. I’m still not fully sold.

Why? Because I know myself. I forget to charge things. My speaker, my watch… now my rangefinder too?

That said, this is a trend across the industry, and for a lot of golfers, it’s a welcome upgrade. The charge lasts many, many rounds, and the USB-C port is easy to access. So I don’t expect this will be an issue for many golfers.

The Removable Magnetic Skin

This is where the A1-Slope gets interesting.

Out of the box, the rangefinder is wrapped in a textured rubber sleeve that adds grip and houses a BITE magnet, Bushnell’s signature cart-mounting tech. But pop the sleeve off, and you get a slimmer, lighter device that fits more easily in your pocket.

In theory, it’s the best of both worlds:

• With skin on: cart magnet, more grip, slightly bulkier

• Skin off: true compact mode, perfect for walking

In reality, it’s a bit of a pain to switch between modes. The sleeve is snug, almost too snug. Taking it off takes a minute or two. But still, the flexibility is a nice touch and something I’ve only seen on the Caddytalk Cube implemented in this way.

What You Give Up by Going Compact

While compact is convenient, it’s not without its compromises. Here’s what you might give up by going with a smaller rangefinder.

For starters, stability. Bigger rangefinders are simply easier to hold steady, especially for players with shaky hands or if you’re ranging at longer distances.

With the A1-Slope, I found it to be stable enough, but I definitely missed the weightier, more substantial feeling of something like the Tour V6 Shift or Pro X3+. You’ll feel the difference immediately.

Button size and spacing is another subtle factor. The A1-Slope’s buttons are slightly more recessed and smaller than those on Bushnell’s full-sized models. Most of the time, it’s not an issue, but if you’re trying to navigate it with your glove hand or if you have larger hands, you might notice yourself fumbling a bit more.

You also lose out on the bigger, brighter field of view that comes with a larger device. This doesn’t matter as much from like 100 yards, but when you’re trying to shoot a flag across a pond or over a bunker from a longer distance, having more glass in front of your eye can just frame everything in a way that’s just more pleasant and convenient.

Finally, compact models sometimes just feel less premium. The A1-Slope is well-built, but there’s a tactile satisfaction in holding a larger device that feels like it was designed for the long haul. It’s a little thing, but it might matter to you.

So while the pocket size is a major win for portability, just know that it comes at a slight cost in terms of ergonomics and stability.

Slope Performance and Accuracy

Bushnell’s yardages are the most trusted in the game, and that holds true here. The A1-Slope gives you reliable, slope-adjusted yardages quickly and confidently.

There’s no fancy “elements” algorithm like in the Pro X3+. No factoring in temperature, altitude, or barometric pressure. All the stuff that’s honestly overkill for most golfers.

The A1-Slope pretty much just focuses on the basics: clear 6x optics, slope-adjusted yardages, and fast flag acquisition.

Its selling points are in its size, its versatility, and its price.

How It Stacks Up to the Competition

Let’s talk about the real question: Is the A1-Slope worth $299?

Here’s where things get tricky.

At $299.99, the A1-Slope is the cheapest slope-enabled Bushnell ever, which is huge for budget-conscious Bushnell fans.

But it’s also going up against some heavy hitters at that price point.

Voice Caddie TL1 (on sale to Breaking Eighty readers for $280)

This is the rangefinder I find myself recommending to most people these days. The fact that it originally retailed for $449 but that Breaking Eighty readers can now get it for as low as $280 is insane! At that price, it’s a ridiculously good value.

An OLED display, fast and accurate yardages, and a build quality that honestly rivals Bushnell. The OLED screen in particular is a feature you rarely see at this price point. Plus, you get slope and a magnetic mount.

I think for most people you’re getting more bang for you buck with the TL1.

Precision Pro Titan Slope (on sale for $269.99)

I’m a huge fan of the Precision Pro Titan Elite. And while the Slope model doesn’t include all of the flagship GPS features of the more expensive Precision Pro, it’s still as robust and bulletproof of a rangefinder as I’ve ever used. And, like with the A1-Slope, you can get slope-adjusted yardages for less than $300.

Here I think it depends on if you value durability or compact size. Whichever one is more important to you will help you decide between the two.

Bushnell Tour V6 ($299.99)

As we talked about the V6 is larger and more premium-feeling but doesn’t include slope. So, if you’d rather a heftier hand feel and a larger display and you value that more than slope-adjusted distances, the V6 is your best $300 spend in the Bushnell line. But to get slope, you’ll have to go up another $100 for the Tour V6 Shift.

Compared to these competitors, the A1-Slope is a bit of a middle child. It doesn’t have the OLED screen of the TL1, the ruggedness of the Titan, or the full-sized confidence of the V6 Shift.

But what it does have is a compact form, Bushnell optics, reliable slope performance for just $300, and the most trusted name in rangefinders. And for a lot of golfers, that’s plenty.

Voice Caddie Laser Fit ($179.99)

Then there’s the Voice Caddie Laser Fit, another one in the compact rangefinder class. Not only is it $100 less expensive than the A1-Slope, but it can also triangulate distances, which is a feature you’ll only find in a few rangefinders at this point. The Laser Fit build quality and optics aren’t as good as the A1-Slope, but it makes for an intriguing decision if you’re interested in a smaller rangefinder.

Who Is the Bushnell A1-Slope For?

This isn’t the rangefinder for someone looking to push the limits of tech. It’s not for gearheads who want OLED displays, wind data, or GPS integration baked into the viewfinder.

But if you’re someone who likes a more compact rangefinder, wants a trusted name with proven optics, rides sometimes and walks sometimes, and has $300 to spend but doesn’t want to roll the dice on a lesser-known brand, then the A1-Slope makes a compelling case.

It’s not flashy, but it’s solid. You’re paying a bit more, but you’re getting quality where it counts.

Final Thoughts on the Bushnell A1-Slope

The A1-Slope is a smart, strategic move for Bushnell. It gives them a foothold in the growing compact rangefinder market, without abandoning what’s made them successful for decades: clean optics, simple functionality, and dependable performance.

Is it the best rangefinder under $300? Not quite.

But is it a very Bushnell answer to a new category? Absolutely.

And if you’re the type of golfer who finds comfort in the familiar, appreciates smart design, and doesn’t want to compromise on trust, the A1-Slope might be the move.

When I first heard about the Pinned Prism+, my expectations weren’t exactly sky-high.

That’s not a knock on Pinned the brand. Actually, when I look at their whole approach to golf—fun, stylish, modern gear at prices that don’t make your wallet cry—I’m pulling for them.

Their thing is bringing personality to golf tech. And what’s wrong with that?

But at the end of the day, good looks and fashion sense only get you so far.

I assumed the Prism+ was going to be one of these “style over substance” products. A cool design, a couple of clever marketing angles, maybe a solid enough rangefinder experience, but nothing game-changing.

Turns out, I was wrong.

There’s a lot more to Prism+ than meets the eye.

In fact, after spending a round with it, I realized this rangefinder actually has some firepower I didn’t expect.

Most notably, it’s got one feature you very rarely see outside of high-end, $400-plus models.

That feature? 7x magnification plus the bonus of a very sweet 4K OLED display.

And once I started looking through that viewfinder, I found myself asking a simple question:

Why don’t more rangefinders do this?

First Impressions of the Pinned Prism+

The very first thing you’ll notice about the Prism+ is the color.

Actually, colors—plural.

Pinned offers this model in seven different solid-color options: Red, Navy, White, Black, Green, Pink, and even a USA-themed red/white/blue edition.

Mine is a bold and attention-grabbing red.

And you know what? I’m cool with it. In a sea of black-and-gray rangefinders, big color is a welcome addition.

I don’t think anyone would argue that Pinned is going for a traditional aesthetic. It’s clear who they’re talking to with this product: younger golfers, casual players, anyone who lean towards hoodies over polos.

But here’s the thing: I think the look works. It doesn’t feel gimmicky. It feels intentional. Modern. Clean. Even kind of classy in its own loud way.

The build quality? Better than expected.

It’s not Bushnell-tier (few things are), and I’d still put the Voice Caddie TL1 or Precision Pro Titan Elite ahead of it in terms of overall materials.

But the Prism+ doesn’t feel cheap. It feels solid in the hand, and I love the fact that everything is controlled with just one, big button on the top.

Also, the case has a unique magnetic closure that’s genuinely useful.

Still, none of that prepared me for what I saw when I actually looked through the viewfinder.

A Stunning Display With 7x Magnification

This is the part that caught me off guard.

You know how most mid-range rangefinders top out at 6x magnification? That’s kind of the industry standard unless you’re spending Pro X3 money.

Well, the Prism+ ups the ante with 7x magnification, and it makes a big difference.

Target acquisition feels easier. The visuals are clearer. And when you pair that with the 4K OLED red display, the experience inside the viewfinder feels premium.

Way more premium than its $260 price tag would suggest.

This might actually be my favorite thing about the Prism+. Not just the magnification, but the entire optical experience. The red lettering/numbering just pops nicely against any background, and the adjustable brightness (five levels) means it works just as well in bright sun as it does at twilight.

I’ve used rangefinders that cost twice as much and didn’t look this good through the lens.

Look, on paper, the difference between 6x and 7x doesn’t seem huge. But out on the course? It’s a different story.

That extra bit of zoom makes it easier to pick up the flag from longer distances or in trickier lighting. And if you’ve ever accidentally lasered a tree behind the green, you’ll appreciate how much easier it is to lock in on what you actually want to hit.

I also found myself using it to scout bunkers and layup zones. That added clarity can actually help you reconsider strategy when you can see more detail of the consequences you’ll face.

So yeah, 7x magnification is not just a spec on the back of the box. And that’s what makes it such a surprising value in the Prism+.

That said, there’s one small visual annoyance…

The Viewfinder Logo (Why Is It There?)

Pinned decided to include their logo inside the viewfinder display.

It’s small. It’s subtle. But it’s always there, floating just above the numbers like a digital watermark.

And I have to ask: why?

It doesn’t really interfere in any way, but it does feel unnecessary and a little distracting at first. And for someone who places a ton of credence in an uncluttered viewfinder – this was just a poor design decision.

It’s not a dealbreaker, but if Pinned asked for my feedback, I’d say drop the logo in the next version. The display is gorgeous. Let it shine.

Other Things the Pinned Does Well

The Prism+ holds its own function-wise. And for $260, I’m starting to see some significant value.

It’s not the absolute fastest I’ve used (Cobalt and Bushnell are still the kings there), but it’s solidly quick. Lock-on speed is reliable and consistent.

In side-by-side testing, the Prism+ stayed within 1-2 yards of the Voice Caddie TL1, which I’ve never had any reason to doubt its accuracy.

It’s got USB-C charging with a claimed 65-70 round battery life. That’s better than average. Most rechargeables top out around 40 or 50 rounds.

I’m still partial to good ol’ CR2s, but I get why a lot of golfers prefer rechargeable. And if that’s you, the Prism+ nails this implementation.

There’s a magnet on the side of the rangefinder, which makes cart attachment simple. It’s strong, but not Bushnell-strong. Still, strong enough.

There’s a physical switch on the side for turning slope mode on and off. It’s a little hard to tell which position means what, but the switch is there and it works.

Where the Pinned Prism+ Falls Short

As much as I’ve enjoyed using this rangefinder, it’s not perfect.

You get vibration when you lock onto the flag, but it’s… underwhelming. Compared to the tactile confirmation of a Bushnell, the Prism+ feels like a missed opportunity here.

It works, but sometimes you second-guess whether you actually felt the vibration. I actually find that more annoying than you might think.

You also don’t get a slope delta in the display. Yes, the Prism+ gives you slope-adjusted yardages. But it doesn’t tell you how much up or down you’re playing. You just see the raw number and then the adjusted number.

Not a huge deal. Most of us can do the quick math. But competitors commonly show you the delta either in degrees or yards, which feels more informative and polished.

You also don’t get any extra features with the Prism+. If you’re someone who wants triangulation, GPS integration, or club recommendations, this isn’t the device for you.

This is a laser rangefinder, period. No bells. No whistles. Just a number and go.

And that’s what holds it back from being a product you’re going to hear people scream about from the rooftops.

In an age when we’re getting bombarded with innovations—things like our rangefinders interacting with our launch monitors and our golf watches and phones for more and more immersive experiences—the Prism+ almost feels old-fashioned but with a very new-fashioned color scheme.

But hey, if all you need is a rock-solid rangefinder, the Prism+ does the job very well.

About the Prism+ Case

Quick sidebar here because I think it’s worth mentioning.

The carrying case for the Prism+ is actually really clever.

Instead of a zipper or a toggle closure, it’s held shut by a strong magnet that runs the length of the opening. It seals tight, opens quickly, and just feels nice to use.

I wonder if we’ll see more rangefinders ditch the zipper for a similar magnetic setup.

Comparing It to the Market

This is where the Prism+ gets really interesting.

At $260, it lands right in that mid-tier rangefinder market where there’s no shortage of competition.

But its 7x magnification immediately gives it an edge most people aren’t expecting. The only other one I’ve tested under $300 is the MGI SureShot, which has a very nice and unique form factor, but lacks the OLED display of the Pinned.

Still, I think the Prism+ runs into some issues when you consider some of the devices that you can pick up for around the same price.

A couple of those options are rangefinders that retail for $400 or more but that, through sales and discount codes, you can pick up for around what you’d pay for the Prism+.

The Voice Caddie TL1 has a dual OLED display and fantastic build quality. It also typically retails for $449, but Breaking Eighty readers can get it for $280, which puts it in direct competition with the Prism+.

That’s a tough battle.

The TL1 has better optics overall and arguably stronger branding (Voice Caddie has built a rep). But it only has 6x magnification. And for as good as the Prism+ red optics look, the dual color green/red combo on the TL1 is admittedly tough to beat.

The Precision Pro Titan Elite is another one that stands in the way.

It’s Precision Pro’s best rangefinder yet. And includes GPS integration, meaning you get your front, middle, and back green distances alongside your pin reading. That’s a feature you typically only find in $600-plus rangefinders.

The Titan Elite retails for $399, but you can occasionally find it on sale for $349, which is a good deal on a high tech, very well build device.

So just with those two quick examples (and there are others), you can see the hard road that the Prism+ has ahead of it. Fact is, you can get more features for about the same money.

But that 7x is pretty sweet!

Who This Rangefinder Is For

This one’s easy.

The Pinned Prism+ is for golfers who:

• Appreciate modern design and bright colors
• Want great optics without spending $500-plus
• Don’t need GPS or hybrid features
• Want a balance of simplicity and premium feel
• Are intrigued by a rangefinder that looks cool and also performs

And honestly? That’s a pretty big group.

So maybe it’s not such a tough road for the Prism+ after all. If you’re looking for a “best bang for your buck” candidate and value crystal-clear visuals and magnification above all else, the Prism+ is going to be a very appealing option.

Who It’s Not For

If you want a device that syncs with your phone, tells you wind speed, or gives you carry distance data from your last range session, this is not the rangefinder for you.

The Prism+ doesn’t want to be that kind of rangefinder. But believe it or not, you can find all of those things available on 2025’s rangefinder menu.

Also, if ultra-premium build quality is your dealbreaker, and you want something tank-like like a Bushnell Pro X3+? Spend the extra cash and go that route.

Final Thoughts on the Pinned Golf Prism+

There are a lot of rangefinders on the market right now. Probably too many.

And in a space that’s gotten really crowded, it’s easy to write off any new model as “just another laser with a magnet.”

I almost did that with the Prism+. At first glance, I figured the Prism+ was going to be a fashion-first device. The kind of rangefinder that looks great in an Instagram post but ends up collecting dust in the gear closet. And I would’ve been wrong.

Because while the looks are the first thing you notice, what really sets this thing apart is the view through the lens. That combination of 7x magnification and OLED clarity makes using it genuinely fun.

It’s one of those rare budget-ish rangefinders that punches above its weight class in at least one very tangible, very noticeable way.

Is it perfect? No.

The vibration feedback is weak. It doesn’t show slope deltas. And the viewfinder logo still makes me shake my head.

But at $259.99, it’s a compelling package.

For me, despite loving the 7x magnification, I’d probably still spend the extra $20 on the TL1. That device is just so good in every way, and it’s continued to be the one I use most often.

But if you’re someone who wants a rangefinder that looks different, feels modern, and delivers a seriously good visual experience, the Pinned Prism+ is worth a long look.

But now there are several competing devices. Actually, you could call some of them copycats of the R10.

In any case, it’s time for an updated look at the trendsetting Garmin R10.

The R10 may have started this product class of affordable golf launch monitors. But does it still rule that class?

WIth newer options like the Rapsodo MLM2PRO, Voice Caddie SC4 Pro, and the Square Golf Launch Monitor, is the R10 still the best choice for budget-conscious golfers?

Or, has it been passed by?

Let’s dive in and find out.

First Impressions of the Garmin R10 Launch Monitor

When the R10 was first released, its presentation and packaging stood out. 

In fact, I initially was pretty floored.

I mean, the design of the R10 is so sleek and compact. It’s roughly the size of a deck of cards. Even now, the size of this device for all that it can do remains incredibly impressive.

But when I first saw that—like I said, there had never been anything like it—I believe the term I blurted out in my initial review was, “badass.”

And it still is. The included hard-shell carrying case feels premium, giving off a high-end vibe that makes a great first impression.

However, its carrying case remains bulkier than competitors like the Rapsodo MLM2PRO, making it slightly less convenient to throw in a golf bag.

A key accessory included with the R10 is its adjustable tripod, which provides a stable base whether on grass or pavement behind a mat.

Another bonus is the included phone mount, allowing for easy access to data on the range, something competing devices don’t offer.

However, compared to the latest competition, the R10 is starting to show its age.

The Voice Caddie SC4 Pro has a built-in display, eliminating the need for a phone or tablet.

And the Square Launch Monitor’s package includes unique accessories like its Swing Stick (which I have some thoughts about.)

Then you’ve got advanced features like the built-in full-swing and slow-motion-impact cameras in the MLM2PRO.

In other words, we’ve seen improvements in the less-than-$1,000 golf launch monitor category.

Bottom line: The R10 still looks and feels premium, but newer devices are offering more convenience right out of the box.

Setting Up the Garmin R10 and Using the Garmin Golf App

From the start, one of the strongest selling points of the R10 has always been its ease of setup.

Seriously, you simply turn it on, pair it with the Garmin Golf app, and start hitting shots. It just works, and fast!

However, while the Bluetooth pairing is simple, the app experience is definitely getting long in the tooth. Garmin is just not keeping up with the advancements introduced by competitors.

With the release of the much higher end Garmin R50, I expected to see more major improvements here – but alas, we’re still waiting.

The Rapsosodo MLM2PRO, for example, has made significant improvements in its app, providing a more professional and polished experience.

Voice Caddie considerably revamped their app experience when they improved the original SC4 to become the new SC4 Pro.

So while the R10 is still quick and easy to set up, it’s once you start using the device with the app when the overall experience starts to feel a little dated and unprofessional compared to all of the options that are now available.

That said, none of the competitors can match the value of the overall Garmin ecosystem. The fact that you pay one $99-a-year subscription fee for access to all of the Garmin benefits, like stat tracking, shot data storage, and Home Tee Hero simulator courses access, and that you get those benefits on all of your Garmin devices is awesome!

I still think the overall ecosystem is one of the strongest selling points for any of the Garmin products, including the R10, as you can see in the video above.

Using the R10 on the Driving Range

If you’re like most golfers, the first thing you’ll do with the R10 is head to the range.

And like I said, the good news is that setup is incredibly easy. If you’ve paired the device before, you simply turn it on, open the Garmin Golf app, hit “Start Training’ and you’re good to go.

Once you’re dialed in, you can select your club and choose from five different display modes, depending on how much data you want to see.

The default view gives you a 3D shot tracer and three customizable stats.

If you want to record your swing with an external camera, the Video Mode automatically saves clips of every shot, which you can review and annotate later.

There are also options to dive deep into stats like launch angle, spin rate, and shot dispersion. And you have the option to keep things super simple by displaying three key numbers in an easy-to-read format.

Personally, I don’t always love to be overwhelmed with advanced data. But knowing that every shot is automatically saved and that I can review my dispersion patterns over time is a huge plus.

For the range sessions, the included phone mount is a simple but underrated feature. It keeps everything easily visible, which is something competing devices don’t offer.

I do wish the R10 had Apple Watch integration, but it’s not a dealbreaker since I can still access everything quickly on my phone.

Garmin R10 Performance and Accuracy vs. the Competition

At launch, the R10 stood out for offering more data points than its competitors at that time. And even today, it remains one of the most metrics-rich sub-$1K launch monitors.

Again, when the R10 first came out, the accuracy for the price was totally groundbreaking.

And even though we now have other options, the R10 still hangs in there and goes toe-to-toe in accuracy with anything in the affordable launch monitor category.

One of my favorite features remains the shot history and dispersion tracking. Every shot is saved, and being able to visually track improvement is a huge advantage.

When compared to similar launch monitors, the R10 still delivers great value, but the competition has caught up.

The Rapsodo MLM2PRO offers built-in cameras for swing and impact video and a far more polished app experience.

The Voice Caddie SC4 Pro eliminates the need for a phone or tablet with its built-in display, plus it offers other attractive features like subscription-free E6 Connect access and built-in swing speed training.

And Square Golf offers a compact, high-accuracy photometric system for those who need an indoor-friendly option, also without subscription fees.

Things are advancing quickly in this space, and I think we’re seeing a combination of the R10 standing the test of time but also starting to show its age in certain aspects.

Simulator Features: R10 vs. Competitors

One of the biggest draws of the R10 is its simulator compatibility. Out of the box, the R10 includes access to five E6 Connect courses, along with compatibility with:

Plus, Garmin’s native Home Tee Hero software gives you cartoon or video-game-like graphics for more than 43,000 simulated golf courses from all around the world.

But to get Home Tee Hero or to use the R10 with those third-party options, you have to pay the $99 annual Garmin Golf membership.

That’s a reasonable rate, especially as I said if you’re all-in on the Garmin ecosystem.

But there are now more affordable and more flexible options.

The Voice Caddie SC4 Pro also includes five E6 Connect courses, but it doesn’t require an additional subscription.

And the Rapsodo MLM2PRO includes its own comparable virtual courses, but you can now unlock an MLM2PRO for life for a one-time $499 payment.

The Square allows users to pay per round of simulated golf with a credit-based system, eliminating the need for ongoing subscriptions. And Square doesn’t charge you extra to use their device with third-party software like GSPro.

So while the R10 is still a strong simulator option for the price, we’re now seeing packages that probably make more sense for a lot of users.

Using Home Tee Hero on the Garmin R10

Garmin’s own native simulator golf software, Home Tee Hero, can’t compete detail and graphics-wise with other options, but it’s not supposed to.

Home Tee Hero is more of a cartoon-like experience. The holes are generally shaped like the real thing, but the detail is lacking and the overall feel is more broad stroke.

Garmin did update their Home Tee Hero to add much greater detail and better graphics, but as of now, it’s limited to their new higher-end R50 launch monitor model.

But even with the older version on the R10, Home Tee Hero is still a ton of fun.

You can select literally any golf course in the world and play it out on the driving range or in your simulator studio.

And you know what? Even though it’s not the most advanced software relative to what’s come out since its debut, it’s still really enjoyable.

To be able to play your home course or another course you’re familiar with and see the same shot distances and forced carries as in real life is a lot of fun.

When the R10 first came out, I gushed about the Home Tee Hero experience. Because, once again, we’d never seen anything like it.

I can’t go so over-the-top in 2025 because there are other options now, including Rapsodo’s Courses solution, which is very similar in presentation and execution to Home Tee Hero.

Even if it’s starting to show its age, I still think Home Tee Hero is worthwhile and continues to add value to owning the R10.

Approach R10 User Experience: Where It Shines, Where It Comes up Short

In 2025, the R10’s user experience is a mix of industry-leading convenience and some noticeable areas where it’s beginning to lag behind.

I still like its simplicity. If you’re someone who values easy setup and hassle-free operation, the R10 delivers.

Another major win for the R10 is its shot tracking and data storage. Every session is saved in the Garmin Golf app. As we’ll discuss in a minute, when you look at a competitor like Square, that doesn’t store shot data at all, the R10 compares favorably.

And as noted, the tie-in to the data organization in the larger Garmin ecosystem and things like their golf watches, shot-tracking sensors, and smart rangefinders, makes the R10 experience somewhat timeless.

But as I’ve said, I think Garmin is overdue for an app experience update. I’d like to think it’s coming, but I felt the same way 4 years ago when the R10 came out, so….we’ll see.

Another frustration is that the R10 still lacks smartwatch integration. Garmin, of all companies, should be making full use of its own golf watches. But users still can’t view live shot data on their wrist.

Garmin R10 vs. Rapsodo MLM2PRO

The $699.99 Rapsodo MLM2PRO is likely the most direct competitor to the R10, which sells for $100 less at $599.99. And, because it’s been around longer, we often see the R10 go on sale for as low as $499.99.

Both of these launch monitors rely on Doppler radar to gather data, though the MLM2PRO also incorporates a dual-camera system for more features and enhanced accuracy.

I have to say that Rapsodo’s app experience is better designed and more intuitive. They’ve also worked continuously to improve it, whereas Garmin seems content to just let their R10 app experience go unchanged.

That said, Garmin’s overall ecosystem that includes so many various products is much more robust than Rapsodo’s.

While the R10 retails for less, the one-time $499 lifetime membership with the MLM2PRO makes it less expensive for users who plan to own one of these devices for several years.

Another factor is ease-of-use. Because of its small size and the included phone mount, the R10 remains one of my favorites for convenience.

To me, if accuracy and a better app experience matter most, the MLM2PRO is the better option.

If price, the Garmin ecosystem compatibility, and simplicity are bigger priorities, stick with the R10.

Garmin R10 vs. Voice Caddie SC4 Pro

Voice Caddie recently introduced big upgrades to what was their SC4 model, now relaunching it as the improved SC4 Pro version.

And in doing so, they’ve made it an even stronger competitor to the R10.

Now with an overhauled app experience, more E6 courses included with purchase, and new swing speed training, the SC4 Pro is starting to provide a better value proposition for less money than the R10.

The SC4 Pro has a built-in display; something no other sub-$1,000 simulator capable device can boast.

And, along with the Square, it’s an affordable launch monitor that doesn’t include an annual subscription. That’s another advantage it’s got over the R10.

The new SC4 Pro model includes four additional data metrics that the original didn’t have: spin axis, side spin, backspin, and dispersion. That puts it closer in line with what the R10 delivers.

While I’d rate accuracy between these two devices as similar, I will give the nod to the R10 in terms of overall simulator software compatibility.

It’s great that both of these products come with E6 Connect courses. But beyond that, the Voice Caddie isn’t compatible with anything other than E6, whereas the R10 can work with a range of options.

If you want a screen and no subscriptions, the SC4 Pro is a great pick. If you want better simulator options, go with the R10.

Garmin R10 vs. Square Golf Launch Monitor

The Square is the newest competitor, offering the first optical-based launch monitor system under $1,000.

Because it’s the first-ever of its kind, it’s getting a lot of hype and attention similar to (but nowhere near the fever pitch of) when the R10 came out.

Like the SC4 Pro, there is no annual subscription required with the Square. Instead, they have a credit system where you can pay for simulator golf by the hole. It’s probably a money saver over time for most people, though I don’t like the mental reminder of knowing I’m paying a little bit more every time I want to play even a hole of simulated golf.

The R10, of course, requires the $99-a-year Garmin membership to use its best features. That’s actually a fair value when you look around, but there are a lot of consumers that are going to prefer the no-subscription option of the Square.

Being a camera-based unit that sits next to the golf ball, the Square is definitely a better option for indoor users who are tight on space. The R10, sitting behind the ball, will require a lot more room depth.

One of my biggest knocks on the Square is that there’s no option to store shot data for later review. So that’s a big win for the R10 in this comparison.

I think that if you’re using a launch monitor in a tight space, the Square is ideal. But if you want long-term tracking and app integration, the R10 wins.

Who Should Buy the R10 in 2025?

There’s no question that there are more solid launch monitor options now in 2025, than there were when the R10 launched.

And many of those will be a better fit for most golfers. But not everyone. The R10 still has it’s place.

I think casual golfers who want a simple, portable launch monitor that’s really flexible when it comes to playing simulator golf are still going to want to consider the R10.

And people who want an easy-to-use device to bring to the range are still going to find the R10 to be convenient.

Plus, the whole process of using this launch monitor is seamless. Yes, the app experience is dated, but it works flawlessly.

And as I keep saying, I think the real winners with the R10 in 2025 are the Garmin power users. If you’re in the Garmin camp, it’s always going to make sense to consider the Garmin version of whatever product class you’re looking at.

Final Thoughts on the Garmin R10 Personal Launch Monitor

When I first reviewed the R10, I was absolutely blown away.

Everyone was!

This product started a whole thing—affordable-but-stiill-accurate launch monitors—that is such a big part of the golf technology space in 2025.

But, like it always does, competition came along. Innovations and refinements continued.

The R10 paved the way, but its success also fueled competition, leading to new alternatives that, for many, may be even better choices in the affordable launch monitor category.

Still, the R10 has its place in 2025.

There’s so much information out there, much of it conflicting, that it’s hard to cut through the noise to get to the essence of what you should really be considering if you’re going to buy one of these devices.

There is no one-size-fits-all best.

There’s only what’s best for you.

But if you’ve never owned a launch monitor, how are you supposed to know what “best” even means in this context?

10 Questions to Answer Before Buying a Golf Launch Monitor (or Simulator)

Yeah, shopping for a launch monitor can be a ton of fun. But it can also be really daunting and confusing.

I’ve narrowed it down to what I think are the 10 key questions you need to answer before you buy a golf launch monitor. If you satisfy each one of these criteria, you’re definitely going to have a launch monitor that’s right for you. So, keep reading.

1. Why Do You Want One?

Seriously. It may sound like an obvious question, but not enough people stop to consider it.

So, really, why do you want a golf launch monitor? Like, what are you planning to do with it?

There are no wrong answers, but you need to resolve this question. Are you buying this to get better? To have fun? To play golf in the offseason? Is it to play simulator golf with your buddies?

Of course, it’s almost certainly a combination of all of those things. But it’s important that you identify the primary driving reason you want a launch monitor, as different devices lend themselves to certain use cases better than others.

2. Where Are You Going to Use a Launch Monitor?

We talked about the why. Next is the where.

So, are you planning to use this in your house? Or out in the yard with a hitting net? Or are you looking for something that you can take out to the range for practice sessions? Maybe you want a launch monitor that’s flexible enough to do all of those things.

You want to get really specific in thinking through where you’re planning to use your launch monitor.

For example, if you’re going to use this out on the range, what type of range is it? Will you be hitting only off of natural grass? Because there are certain launch monitors that do better at reading shots hit off of real turf. You don’t want to buy a device and then realize later that it’s limited to only mat use – or worse, is indoor only.

Is the driving range one of those multiple-story facilities with lots of metal surrounding it? If so, a Doppler radar device is most likely going to have interference issues in that environment.

So having a very specific answer to your “where” question is going to make all of the rest of these questions a lot easier to answer.

3. How Much Space Do You Have?

Piggybacking off of the “why” and the “where” questions, do you plan to use your launch monitor indoors?

If so, you need to understand that different devices have different space requirements.

Say you’re considering the Bushnell Launch Pro. That’s an optical device that uses high-speed cameras to collect your shot data. So because of that, it requires a lot less space than if you’re using a Doppler radar-based system, which has to be placed several feet behind the ball and needs enough space in front of the ball to accurately track what that ball is doing.

If you’ve got tight quarters and you don’t have 7 or 8 feet of space behind the ball plus another 7 or 8 feet of space available in front of the ball, then a lot of those Doppler radar-based options are not going to be the right fit and are only going to lead to frustration.

Or maybe you’ve got plenty of space. In that case, a Doppler radar device might be perfect. They provide a lot of flexibility, features, and bang for the buck.

All that to say, space is a huge consideration. You need the right type of device for where you’re going to be using it most.

Oh, and one thing, don’t forget to measure your ceiling height. Nothing would be more frustrating than to buy a launch monitor, get it all set up, and then put a hole in your ceiling because you didn’t plan properly.

Trust me, I’ve been there.

4. Which Technology Do You Prefer?

Assuming space isn’t a dictating factor, is there a technology that you prefer?

There are two main types of golf launch monitor technology: Doppler radar and optical cameras. Some devices use a combination of both.

As I mentioned, a Doppler radar device is something you’re going to place behind the ball, and it’s going to need more space than an optical camera device.

An optical device is going to be placed right next to the golf ball. So for that type of launch monitor, you only need enough room behind you to swing your golf club freely, and you only need about 8 feet in front of you.

So, generally speaking, an optical device is going to require about half as much space as a radar device.

But if you’re trying to spend less than $1,000 or $1,500, the only good optical solution is probably the Square Golf Launch Monitor. So budget, which we’ll discuss below, may be a deciding factor as to which type of technology you go with.

Now, it’s not like optical is always superior to radar. For instance, kind of the gold standard of launch monitors is Trackman, which costs upwards of $30,000 or $40,000, and it is a Doppler radar launch monitor.

Another leader in the space is the $20,000 Foresight QuadMAX, which is an optical launch monitor.

The point is that there are very good, very high-end, very accurate devices available in either the optical or radar camps. It really comes down to what is going to be right for you, your needs, your space, your budget.

But one thing you need to consider is, who will be using this launch monitor?

If you go with an optical device, which sits across from where you’re hitting, that’s really only going to be the right choice if you plan to play with all right- or all left-handed players.

Because, otherwise, you’re going to have to move the launch monitor every time the opposite-handed player takes their turn. Playing a round of simulator golf with a group of people really isn’t going to be a great experience if you’re having to constantly change your setup.

If that’s something you envision doing often, you’re probably better off going with a Doppler radar launch monitor that sits behind you and can very easily accommodate both types of golfers.

The other alternative is if you’re planning to set up a higher-end, dedicated simulator studio, you can use an overhead device. These are optical launch monitors that hang above the hitting area, so they can easily cater to both right- and left-handed golfers.

So if you’re looking for ultimate convenience, an overhead device is the way to go. But they’re also very expensive. At minimum, you’re looking at a spend of about $5,000, which is a much higher minimum than you’d find with either a Doppler or optical unit.

And an overhead device won’t afford you the flexibility of using your launch monitor anywhere beyond in that dedicated space.

5. What’s Your Budget?

This one might be the most important question to answer and the biggest differentiator in helping you decide what options are available to you.

As you might have realized from looking around at launch monitors, these things can cost anywhere from a couple hundred dollars all the way up to 20, 30, 40, 50 thousand dollars, or even more.

In many cases, it’s not just the cost of the launch monitor that you need to consider. This is where we start to see our previous questions funneling down into this one.

For instance, maybe you just want a launch monitor to take out in your backyard. Cool. For under $500, you can get a device that’s going to be reasonably accurate and make practice more fun.

But guess what? You’re still going to need a net to hit into. And you’re going to need a mat to hit off of. All of that needs to factor into your budget.

Another consideration is special golf balls. In many cases, if you want accurate spin data, you need specially marked balls, and they’re kind of expensive. Titleist RCT balls, for instance, cost $70 a dozen.

So, how much should you plan to spend on a golf launch monitor?

If you’re just looking for something that you can take out to the range and have some fun with, you can do it for around $500.

If you’re looking for a nice backyard setup with a net and a mat, you can probably get it done for under $1,000. But I’d recommend budgeting for between $1,000 and $2,000 to make sure you’re getting everything that you need.

If you’re planning to build a simulator studio at home, I think the absolute minimum I’d plan on is about $2,000, but that’s for a fairly janky setup. That might be like if you were using a TV that you already own and didn’t need to buy a projector.

All of the accessories needed to do a sim studio right can add up very quickly and make that cost much more expensive.

If you’re trying to achieve something that’s close to a professional setup, something that really feels like a proper simulator studio, you should probably expect to spend at least $7,500. That’s taking into account all of the things—the launch monitor, the mat, the projector, the impact screen, the special golf balls.

The good news is now there are very good “sim in a box” type packages you can get with all of the most popular launch monitors, that will make this pretty easy.

So while you can do an indoor setup on a budget, just make sure you’re factoring in all of the things you’ll need and how professional you want your setup to look and feel.

As for the launch monitors themselves in a pseudo-professional-type setup, if you’re looking for a basic Doppler radar device, I’d expect to spend a minimum of $500 to $1,000.

That’s going to get you in the range of launch monitors like the Voice Caddie SC4 Pro, the Garmin Approach R10, and the Rapsodo MLM2PRO.

On the optical side in the budget range, you’re pretty much limited to the Square Golf Launch Monitor.

If you have a little bit more money to spend, the FlightScope Mevo+ is my overall best recommendation. If you use our coupon code (BREAKINGEIGHTYPLUS) and if they have any current sales going, you’re going to be able to get that between $1,800-$1,900. And then there are going to be some add-ons if you want extra features and data.

The Mevo+ is my favorite middle-of-the-road device that can do just about everything at a great price point. But, it being a radar device, you need to make sure you have enough space. The Mevo+ is going to need about 15 feet, all-in, for it to record accurate data.

Other than with the Square, if you’re looking for an optical launch monitor, you should plan to spend at least $2,000.

If you can still find one, the outgoing Bushnell Launch Pro ball data only model retails for right around two grand.

It’s being replaced with the Bushnell LPi. It’s similar, but the major differences are that there is no screen, it’s indoor only, but it does come with club data. It will retail for $2,799.

The SkyTrak+ retails for $3,000, but you can often find it for around $2,500.

Then there’s the Uneekor Eye Mini Lite for $2,749.

So, for a good optical device, at minimum you’re probably going to be in that $2,000 to $3,000 range.

For an overhead device, plan to spend $5,000 or quite a bit more.

6. Are You OK with a Subscription?

There’s another budget consideration for you, and that is everyone’s favorite topic: subscriptions.

Most of these golf launch monitors are going to require a subscription, at least if you want to use all of the features they’re capable of or if you want to use them to play third-party simulator software.

As frustrating as that may be, that’s the nature of the game.

Subscription costs can range from a fairly nominal hundred bucks a year up to $500 a year for the FSX software with the subscription-based Foresight Sports or Bushnell launch monitors.

There are subscription-free Foresight launch monitors, but for the GC3S or Bushnell LPi, if you want to use pretty much any software, whether on an iPad or gaming PC, you’re going to have to spend $500 a year.

(The Foresight GC3 doesn’t have a subscription, but does cost thousands more.)

So, as you’re thinking about which launch monitor is right for you, make sure you take the time to research all of the various subscription rates. That’s going to have a big impact on your year-over-year budgeting. The actual cost of ownership over five years may be significantly more than you initially thought.

Now, if you’re just totally opposed to paying a subscription, you do have some options.

One is the Voice Caddie SC4 Pro for around $500.

Another is the Rapsodo MLM2PRO, which is $699 with a subscription fee of $199, but they recently made it so that for $500, you can unlock it for life. So for $1,200 all-in, you can get the Rapsodo MLM2PRO, which is a pretty good deal.

The FlightScope Mevo+ is another device without a subscription. And for all the features that it offers, that’s really one of its biggest selling points.

The Square is another subscription-free device. But you do have to buy credits for every hole of simulator golf you want to play. These are affordable though, and it comes with enough to play 55 full rounds.

When you get to the higher end, there are options from Foresight Sports like the GC3, GCQuad, and QuadMAX.

So, if you don’t want a subscription fee at all, those are the devices I’d take a look at.

7. How Accurate Do You Want It to Be?

Obviously, everyone is looking for the best accuracy. But how much are you willing to pay for improved accuracy?

As you might imagine, when you have launch monitors ranging in price from $200 to $50,000, there are going to be different levels of accuracy.

A lot of the budget launch monitors can do a fairly decent job of getting reasonably close. And for a lot of people, that’s close enough to get a general idea of some of your numbers, which legitimately can help you better understand what’s going on with your golf swing.

Just keep in mind that with a lot of those cheaper devices, the data metrics aren’t actually measured. Instead, they’re calculated using an algorithm.

So devices like the MLM2PRO, the R10, the SC4 Pro, they’re going to have four to six metrics that they’re actually going to measure, and then the rest are going to be calculated. So, essentially, it’s their best guess at what those numbers should be.

As I said, under the right conditions, all of those devices actually do a fairly good job with those guesses. But you should know that they are in fact algorithm-generated guesses.

A general rule of thumb is: The more you’re willing to pay, the more accurate the launch monitor is going to be and the more metrics that it’s going to directly measure as opposed to calculate.

Getting back to our first question, why do you want a golf launch monitor?

Are you just looking to have some fun and want simulator golf to be relatively realistic? Then you don’t need a device that’s perfectly accurate.

On the other hand, if you’re a teaching professional, club fitter, or competitive player, then accuracy is going to be very important. And you’re going to need to spend more money on your device.

In my experience, I’ve found that most people don’t need the absolute supreme level of accuracy.

Every device I’ve mentioned so far, when set up properly, is going to be reasonably accurate.

And that “set up properly” caveat is key. I’ve gotten dozens of emails for literally every one of these devices saying that it’s not accurate or it doesn’t work.

And for all of the same products, I’ve also received dozens of emails from people saying how great the product is, how dead-on accurate it is, how happy they are with their purchase.

The difference between those two experiences, especially with these less-expensive units, comes down to making sure you’re using them in the proper conditions and are taking the time to set them up correctly.

8. What Statistics Are Most Important to You?

This question is related to most of the other questions, including why you want a launch monitor, what kind of budget you have, and how accurate you need it to be.

Do you only really care about learning how far the ball is going with each of your clubs? Great. You can spend quite a bit less than the person who really needs club path data and accurate spin numbers and angle of attack and all of those advanced sorts of metrics.

When you’re shopping for a golf launch monitor, look carefully at what data it includes. Also, pay attention to whether those metrics are actually measured or if they are calculated.

Here’s an example of where people often get surprised. The SkyTrak+ is one of the most popular launch monitors on the market. But guess what? As of March 2025, It doesn’t include angle of attack. And a lot of SkyTrak+ owners don’t figure that out until after they’ve bought the launch monitor.

For a $3,000 device, and for as important as that metric is for a lot of people, not having angle of attack on the SkyTrak+ has led to some frustration.

Many devices also differentiate between ball-only data and club data. So if you want things like carry distance, total distance, spin numbers, and apex, you’re going to be able to get those for less than if you also want club data.

If on the other hand, you want the whole D-Plane suite where you’re getting face-to-path, face-to-target, club path, etc., you’re going to need to spend a little bit more.

For instance, with the FlightScope Mevo+, you have the option to pay for the Pro Package, which is what unlocks all of that advanced club data.

With a unit like the new indoor-only Bushnell LPi, you pay $2,799 and for the first year, you get both ball and club data included. But after that, you have to pay that $500 a year subscription if you want to keep the club data.

It’s important with any of these launch monitors that you fully understand exactly what you’re getting and that it satisfies what you need.

If you don’t care about club statistics, there’s a good chance that you can save some money.

9. What Device Will You Use It On?

Now we’re talking about computer compatibility.

There are some launch monitors with built-in displays that don’t require you to interface with a phone, tablet, or PC. You can just turn on the device and get all of your shot data right on the unit’s display.

The SC4 Pro is one example on the budget side. As for more expensive models, you’ve got the Foresight Sports launch monitors and the Uneekor Eye Mini.

All of those options have built-in screens, which means you can get your numbers with nothing more than the device itself.

But chances are, if you’re spending all of this money, you’re hoping to get the most out of it. And to do that, you’re going to need to interface with an app or a computer program that’s designed to go with the launch monitor.

Most of these devices that I’ve mentioned will have phone apps that you can use to track all of your data and progress over time.

Some of these devices will also have a mobile simulator option. Usually, this means access to something like E6 Connect, where you can play a selection of simulated golf courses on your iPhone or iPad. For this type of setup, you don’t need any additional fancy equipment to play real simulator golf.

But if you’re looking to go all the way and you’re trying to get that true, more professional simulator setup, then there’s a good chance you’re going to need a gaming PC to run the required software.

Of course, that’s going to require you to spend quite a bit more money.

So getting a handle on how different launch monitors work with different simulator software choices and the system requirements that come with those pairings is a really important consideration for your budget as well as what you’re going to be able to do with your launch monitor.

10. What Software Do You Want to Use?

Is there any specific software you are hoping to use?

That’s going to be a key question to answer before you make your launch monitor decision.

Not all of these devices are compatible with the same software packages.

Do all of your friends have GSPro, and do you want to be able to compete against them in online tournaments? Then obviously you’re going to need to make sure your launch monitor is compatible with GSPro.

Do you like the idea of just being able to use your phone to connect to something like E6 Connect?

Or maybe you like the convenience of a little less-realistic simulator solution like Garmin’s Home Tee Hero or Rapsodo’s Courses feature, where you can play nearly simulator golf on more than 42,000 different courses.

Or maybe you don’t really care about playing simulator golf. But you want to make sure the native app that you use is going to provide a really enjoyable and useful practice experience.

All of these are important considerations. They really do play into how much you’re going to enjoy using the launch monitor you choose.

So make sure you do a little bit of research on the software options you’ll have with each device. That just might make the difference between loving or hating a golf launch monitor.

Final Thoughts on Asking the Right Questions Before Choosing a Launch Monitor

But with so many options now on the market, which one is right for you?

It honestly can be pretty confusing, but I’ve personally gone out and reviewed nearly all of the best golf launch monitors under $5,000 so that you don’t have to.

Best Value: Square Launch Monitor

Not only is the Square the best optical launch monitor under $1,000, it’s also the best (and maybe the only) under $2,000 as well.

At $699 the new Square packs a ton of value in a very small package. It even comes with a separate swing stick that allows you to play even if you’re limited on ceiling height.

While its software is lacking some key features and the build quality is mediocre at best, the reality is that this device is going to be the right fit for a lot of more casual golfers looking to play sim golf as affordably as possible.

• Target Price: $699. Considering it’s fairly new, I have yet to see many discounts here.

Best User Interface: SkyTrak+

Most of the devices in this list can provide great home simulator experiences.

But in my testing, the SkyTrak+ might provide the most enjoyable overall user experience if you’re building a home simulator.

For starters, while it has Doppler built in, the SkyTrak+ primarily uses cameras to track data. This means it sits next to the ball, rather than behind it – taking up much less space than the Mevo Plus or MLM2Pro.

The user-interace is also the most modern and enjoyable to use out of any of these devices as well.

Accuracy is close to the Bushnell Launch Pro, which is the most accurate device on the list.

And to top it off it comes with both a mobile and PC license for E6 Connect simulator software. And for a little bit more a year, you can use their native simulator – which is excellent.

The downsides are that you can’t use it on grass outdoors, and doesn’t feel quite as “pro” as the Mevo Plus or Bushnell. But if you want to set up a home simulator, have limited space, and want a device that simply works, and works well? The SkyTrak+ is an excellent choice.

Simply put, the Rapsodo MLM 2 Pro is the best launch monitor under $1k, full stop.

The combination of Doppler radar and two cameras makes it the most accurate launch monitor in this price range. Not only does the built-in camera help track the ball for accuracy, but the second camera will record your impact at 240fps allowing you to see exactly what the ball and clubface are doing.

Rapsodo has improved the user-experience over the previous MLM in every way. It’s more fun, provides better results, and despite being more expensive – we’ve found it to truly be worth the upgrade.

It does a lot of the things that impressed us so much with the Garmin R10, but does them a little bit better, without having to pay too much of a premium to do it.

And after directly comparing distances to a Trackman? It’s surprisingly accurate.

The SC4 Pro is by far the most feature-heavy launch monitor you’ll find under $500. It has a built-in screen (which is even more useful than you’d expect), it has simulator capabilities, and can be used both indoors and outdoors.

Its spin numbers have been improved since the original SC4 with the release of their “ProMetrics” algorithm in the new Pro models. Not to mention you also get side spin and dispersion now as well.

For a versatile budget launch monitor that you can use both at home and on the range? This one is tough to beat.

Most Accurate: Bushnell Launch Pro

Of all the launch monitors on this list, this definitely leans the most into “professional” territory. 

The Bushnell Launch Pro is built on the GC3 Platform, and performs identically to that. 

The Launch Pro uses a high-tech camera system rather than Doppler to give you data. This makes it one of the most accurate units of any launch monitor I’ve tested.

Even better, Bushnell has completely changed their pricing structure, and it’s now more affordable than ever before. You can get a ball-data enabled unit for right around $2k, and with that you get a free year of their Gold membership.

The downside? After that, it’s $500/year, and you’ll need to have it if you want to use any simulator features.

If you’re looking for a semi-permanent simulator setup, or you want a professional-level device that’s a little more budget-friendly? 

This is the launch monitor for you.

Just keep in mind, it’s not as easy to setup as some of the others, and if you want to use it as a simulator beyond just your iPad? You’ll need a gaming PC in order to do it.

Also worth noting, Bushnell is phasing this product out in favor of the new LPi. I’ve left it on this list for the time being because I think it represents a great value for a professional level device. I also don’t love the offering of the LPi, and think this will be a better and more versatile fit for most people.

This may feel like a weird category to put the Uneekor, but hear me out. While it’s not super portable, if you want to grind away on the range and get professional quality numbers? This device is fantastic.

It performs similarly in features and accuracy to the Launch Pro, but I’ve found its e-ink screen to be easier to read, and the fact it provides 10 metrics rather than the 6 on the Bushnell to be preferable.

So if you don’t want to deal with an app and want an all-in-one device this is a great way to do it. It also has all the simulator options and features you’d hope for as well, so it can easily double as a fantastic home golf simulator.

The under $500 launch monitor market has gone crazy over the last couple years and there are a lot of very viable options here.

But I have to give the edge to the original FlightScope Mevo.

Why?

When it comes to the sub-$500 launch monitor market the Mevo and the Rapsodo MLM are the two I hear about the most.

I give the edge to FlightScope for simplicity and accuracy.

But in terms of features? The Rapsodo is the winner.

And considering Rapsodo recently dropped the MSRP from $499 to $299? This becomes the no-brainer pick for entry-level launch monitor.

For one, it has lateral data, and will show you a shot tracer view of every ball you hit.

Just the lateral data alone may be enough for some people to choose it over the Mevo. It also has a robust social experience with games you can play against other Rapsodo users. 

I haven’t found the metrics to be quite as reliable as other devices, but it’s usually still in the right ballpark. It’s also nice that the design allows the phone to sit upright, so you can see the data easily.

To be clear, for around $500, the Garmin Approach R10 is fantastic. And when it came out in 2021, there was nothing under $1,000 that could touch it.

But now in 2025? We have the Rapsodo MLM2Pro which while slightly more expensive, gives better numbers. And we also have the Swing Caddie SC4, which has more features, and you can get for less than the R10.

But this doesn’t change the fact the R10 is great. This is especially true if you’re already in the Garmin eco-system and use the CT10 sensors or a Garmin golf watch.

If this is the case, I’d go with the R10 over the other two simply for the convenience of having all of your data in one place.

Some Things to Consider Before You Buy

What is a Golf Launch Monitor?

First off, you may have stumbled upon this article and found yourself thinking “what the heck is a launch monitor?”

Simply put, a golf launch monitor is a Doppler radar or camera-based device that measures various metrics about your golf shots. This can include carry distance, swing speed, ball speed, spin rate, and many more.

You set the launch monitor behind or to the side of your ball on a range, garage, or simulator – and either in a compatible app or on the device itself, it gives you all of the info you could want to know about a golf swing.

What metrics a launch monitor provides, how accurate the data is, and what additional features the device has will vary wildly depending on the price point.

Are There Specific Features or Specs You Should Be Looking For?

Every single golfer is going to look for something slightly different in a launch monitor.

Are you a scratch golfer who is grinding to dial in his wedges down to the nearest yard? Then accuracy is going to be really important to you.

Are you a 15 handicap who gets bored on the range and you’re just looking for a way to make practice more enjoyable? You’re going to want a launch monitor that’s easy to use, and also has some fun bonus features.

Are you setting up a simulator in your garage for off-season play and practice? You’ll want to make sure it’s compatible with your simulator software of choice.

To make matters more complicated, prices for launch monitors run from $200 to $30,000 or more.

So before deciding which device you want, it’s really important to understand what you’re looking for, as well as what your budget is.

When considering a golf launch monitor here are some of the things you should be considering:

• Accuracy – How close do you really need the numbers to be? Within a yard every time? Or are you ok with numbers that are in the right ballpark?
• Portability – Are you setting your device up in the garage and then not touching it? Or will you be taking it out to the range on a regular basis?
• Price – What features do you need, and is it really worth the extra money to jump from a device in the $500 range to spending $2,000 or more? Also, take note of whether or not there is a recurring subscription fee to use the device.
• Ease of use – You want a device you’ll use, and if you’re someone who won’t use something that is less user-friendly, this is worth considering.
• Simulator Compatibility – Is your primary purpose to use this as a simulator? Make sure it’s compatible. If this is the case, check out our ultimate guide to building a golf simulator for home. Something Everyone Should Know Before Buying Any of These Products

Having now spent dozens of hours testing launch monitors, and talking to hundreds of readers about their experiences with portable launch monitors, I wanted to add a quick disclaimer here.

When it comes to any launch monitor, much of its accuracy is going to come down to proper setup.

There are a lot of variables at play here:

• Lighting
• Indoors/Outdoors
• Where the device is positioned
• Weather
• And so on…

Spend some time to test and dial in your launch monitor. ALL of the devices here are capable of achieving great results relative to their price point. 

But in most cases, they also can give you pretty inaccurate results if they’re not set up properly.

For literally every single device on this list I’ve heard from multiple people that it’s “great and accurate enough for their needs,” or “it’s horribly inaccurate.”

Now, especially on the lower end, you can expect some more variable results. But in most cases, if things seem wildly off, it likely has something to do with your setup and environment. So just keep this in mind as you’re deciding whether or not a launch monitor is right for you or not.

Of all the products I’ve received to review in the past several months, the Garmin Approach G20 Solar just might be the one that surprised me most.

It’s a solar-powered handheld GPS unit.

Who knew we needed one of these?

Or, do we need it?

It’s novel, certainly. But is it actually useful? And can it stand up to a fairly aggressive $300 price tag?

I’ve now had the chance to get out on the course with the Garmin G20, and I’m ready to share some thoughts.

First Impressions of the Garmin Approach G20 Solar

Alright, one thing that’s not surprising about the Garmin G20 is its packaging and presentation.

It’s a Garmin.

It’s one of their Approach series products.

And it’s packaged exactly like all of the other products in that line. Same gray box. No frills. Nothing terribly impressive.

But again, it’s Garmin. They’ve got the reputation that allows them to go with a straightforward approach that doesn’t require them to spend more on packaging.

So in the box, you’ve got the device itself, a clip, a USB-C charging cord, and an instruction manual. Very simple.

The thing that jumped out to me upon opening the box was that I thought the G20 was going to be a bit bigger. The fact that it’s smaller than what I was expecting, I think, is a good thing. It’s just 2.1 x 3.5 x 0.7 inches and weighs only 3.8 ounces without the belt clip and 5.1 ounces with the belt clip.

As we’ll get into, this GPS actually has a built-in solar panel. So, like I said, I thought that would require a bigger-sized build. But as it turns out, I think the size is just right for most use cases.

G20 Clip-On Convenience

The G20 includes a magnet on the back, so it’s totally convenient for sticking onto a golf cart, similar to the Bushnell Phantom 3. In fact, I think the Phantom 3 is going to be one of the biggest competitors to the G20.

The G20 comes with a nice little clip, which also includes a magnet. So it’s a really simple, quick magnetic snap-on to attach the device to the clip. It works great.

I carried my clubs when I was testing the G20, and I found it really convenient to attach the G20 to the clip and then snap that onto a carabiner on my golf bag. I was able to look down and get my distances whenever I wanted. And I found the whole experience to be really easy.

Discovering the Approach G20’s Solar Features

One of the coolest features on the G20 is a solar page that reports exactly how much solar power you’re getting at any different moment. 

It will show you how much battery life is remaining, how intense the solar energy that it’s receiving is, and how much battery power you’ve gained from the sun on that day.

When I first pulled the G20 out of the box, I took it outside in direct sunlight for like five minutes, and it added 19 minutes of battery life to the unit. I mean, that’s pretty cool.

I initially thought the solar-powered thing might be more gimmick than an actual useful feature. I was skeptical about how much power that little solar panel would actually add to the battery life. So, I have to admit, I was kind of shocked to see what you can actually gain in a very short amount of time.

Honestly, I’m not sure I’m ever going to have to worry about battery life with this thing. Right out of the box, it was already at like six days of life. Then, when I discovered how quickly it charges in the sun, I realized that battery life was going to be a non-issue with the G20.

Now, if it does ever die and you need a quick charge, there’s a USB-C port on the side of the device, so it’s a simple plug in and you’re good to go.

I’m definitely taking back whatever skepticism I had about the solar feature being a gimmick. I actually think it’s not only cool but potentially really useful.

But… The Garmin G20 is objectively expensive for what it does. So, is it worth it?

Does the Garmin Approach G20 Do Enough for $300?

Three hundred bucks for a handheld GPS is a little steep, at least on the surface.

At that price point, you kind of expect some more advanced features. Like a color screen or detailed hole maps.

And you don’t really get any of that with the G20. When you look at it in the context of all of the advanced features that are available within the Garmin ecosystem, this device is pretty basic.

The G20’s GPS data is similar to what you’d get in the Garmin G12 handheld GPS or their S12 watch.

In fact, I think the S12 watch is basically just a smaller version of the G20. Of course, without the solar feature.

But if you’re considering buying a G20, I’d also look at the S12. It’s a watch versus a GPS, of course. But functionality- and navigation-wise, they’re very similar. And the S12, at $199.99, is $100 less expensive than the G20.

Or you could spend the same amount and get the new Approach S44 watch which has a color screen, basic hole maps, and a lot more.

But again, the S12 or S44 can’t be powered by the sun.

G20 Button Navigation

The G20 is not a touchscreen device. Instead, everything is operated by four buttons.

On the left side of the G20, there are up and down buttons, which allow you to scroll through menus. The up button also doubles as the power button.

On the right, there’s a “select” or “OK” button. And then below that, there’s a “back” button, which allows you to get to the previous screen.

I found using the G20 to be super intuitive. And, personally, I like the fact that there are physical buttons. I think with a handheld unit of this size, navigation by buttons is going to be much easier than if you had a touchscreen.

But for the price, giving the golfer the option to do both would be nice.

As for the G20 display, I think it’s great, even though there’s no color. It’s very easy to read outside, whether it’s cloudy, sunny, or rainy. I’ve had no issues at all seeing the screen and getting my information quickly.

This device also includes a Big Numbers mode, so that you can get your front/center/back information even more easily if you have any vision issues.

Pairing the G20 with the Garmin App

Just like most Garmin products, the Approach G20 Solar does pair with the Garmin Golf app. And I’ve got to say, Garmin is really doing a nice job of building out an extensive ecosystem. If you’re all-in on Garmin—like you’ve got a Garmin launch monitor, rangefinder, and GPS or watch—to be able to get all of your data in one central location I think is really smart.

Beyond your basic yardages, you can use your G20 to keep score and track stats. But I don’t really find those use cases with a handheld GPS to be too practical.

It’s one thing to input things like my score or club selection on my watch, where it’s constantly accessible. But to have to go back to my bag or cart to enter numbers into the G20, I don’t see myself doing that consistently.

So for me, a device like the G20 is really about the GPS yardages. That’s the main function I see as practical and the real reason I think most people would buy this product.

As far as accuracy when it comes to those yardages, the G20 is dead on. Garmin has proven that they’re the best in the business at GPS data, and the G20 is no exception. It worked flawlessly for me.

Another cool feature you get if you pair the G20 with the Garmin app is wind data. But I’ve got to say that I’m not so sure wind data on devices like this is always as useful as it’s made out to be. The problem, as I see it, is that you’re never totally sure where that data is coming from. I mean it could be pulling information from a tower 20 miles away. And even if it’s a closer location than that, there’s always going to be fluctuations from hole to hole out on a golf course.

My Slight Concern with This Garmin Handheld GPS

As I mentioned, the G20 retails for $300. My concern is that for that price, I just find the hole maps to be very basic. The whole visual and interactive experience is pretty plain. There’s no color, and there’s no real detail. Like I said, it’s the same experience as with the G12 and S12.

So while this isn’t necessarily a huge deal, I think it could be a frustration for some people when you consider the price you’re paying.

Now, you can obviously use the G20 to get front/center/back green distances. And you can button-click through multiple pin locations to get more accurate distances to that day’s flag.

You can also get hazard data. But this where the lack of built-in maps really holds it back. Essentially, you get a green and then kind of like a timeline of hazards that you can scroll through.

But honestly, without that map visual, it wasn’t always obvious to me which hazard distance I was looking at.

Really, these are the same kinds of limitations you’d find in most handhelds and basic GPS watches. It’s just that the Garmin G20 costs $300. And I think for that price, I would like to see a bit more, including things like hole maps.

That said, I get that the point here is the solar feature. So if you’re including all that extra data, then the solar aspect probably doesn’t work.

Should You Buy the Garmin Approach G20?

I think it’s a hard “maybe’ when you consider whether or not the G20 is worth buying.

If you’re looking for a GPS device that’s simple, that you can use with a cart or when you’re carrying, that’s small enough that you can clip it to your belt without any intrusion, and that has really cool solar-power capabilities that actually work better than I expected, totally buy the Garmin G20.

The problem for a lot of people, as I’ve said, is that beyond the solar, this is a basic GPS. The fact is, you can get a similar experience for half as much as this.

Now, the Garmin ecosystem I think is always a factor in any Garmin-buying decision. If you’re in with Garmin, or you do want to use this device to keep score and keep track of statistics, then the G20 probably makes more sense than if you’re not in those situations.

And that is a caveat worth considering. If you did want to save the money and buy something like the Bushnell Phantom 3 (or even a discounted Phantom 2) for $150, you’d be giving up access to that Garmin ecosystem.

Then there’s the other direction. You could look at this as, if you’re already spending $300, you could step up another $200 to get the Garmin G80, which gives you full-color, detailed hole maps.

And the G80 is also a golf launch monitor! Granted, it’s fairly basic in that function, but it does work. You can simply set it on the ground, and you’re going to get some basic shot data. Is it the most accurate in the world? Of course not. But, for some people, this might really be all they need to get a general idea of how far their ball is going and what they are doing in their swing.

The G80 also has a slightly bigger display for you to see those better hole maps.

The point being that, for some people, the G80 is going to be pretty compelling. It provides a lot of useful features for only $200 more.

I do have to note that the G80 has not been updated in several years. So it doesn’t include a built-in magnet or as sleek of a case—some of the more modern features that have become standard with newer Garmin products.

Personally, as someone who loves using a Garmin GPS watch, I’m probably skipping the whole handheld GPS thing, whether it’s the G20, the G80, the Phantom 3, or whatever else. My watch can give me so much more information.

But if you’re in the market for a GPS, the G20 does exactly what it says it’s going to do and does it very well. I think it’s worth buying, even if I don’t necessarily think it’s the best value at $300.

Honestly, about a year ago, I was starting to think that this product class had kind of plateaued. Like, rangefinders had kind of become a commodity, with all of them very similar to each other and little differentiation between models.

That idea has been completely blown up. Recently, all kinds of cutting-edge technology is being introduced on the rangefinder front to the point that we’ve got an entirely new product class: Smart rangefinders.

Suddenly, we’ve got multiple options, especially when it comes to GPS integration, that are not only really technologically impressive but that might actually help your golf game.

I’m going to highlight what I think are the five best smart GPS rangefinders on the market.  I’ve tested every single one of thse extensively.

I’m going to walk you through the pros and cons, compare features, and discuss pricing. By the end, you’ll know which one—if any—is right for you.

Quick note: I have not yet had the opportunity to review the new LINK-Enabled technology from Foresight and Bushnell or the upcoming i4 rangefinder from FlightScope. In each case, those rangefinders allow you to actually get launch monitor data and personalized club recommendations right in the rangefinder. Pretty cool in theory, and from what I saw at the 2025 PGA Show, they look very promising. I’ll update this post if those products end up making the cut.

What Is a Smart GPS Rangefinder?

Before the “smart” distinction, most rangefinders functioned pretty much the same way. You look through the lens, you hit a button, and the rangefinder gives you the distance to the flag, or whatever target you’re shooting.

But GPS-enabled rangefinders take things a step further. They integrate GPS data to provide additional information, such as distances to the front, middle, and back of the green, hazard distances, and even hole overviews.

How this information is displayed varies from device to device. Some models provide an on-screen display, while others pair with an app or watch. Not every unit will be for everyone. You may prefer the features or functionality of one type of smart rangefinder more than another.

Or, you might find that smart GPS rangefinders aren’t your thing at all. Because, honestly, I’m not sure this type of product is right for all golfers.

The Downsides of GPS Rangefinders

For all their benefits, which we’ll get into, GPS rangefinders do have some drawbacks.

For one thing, most of them require USB-C charging, which could be an issue if you’re the type of person who regularly forgets to charge your electronics. If that’s you, and you can envision yourself constantly showing up at the golf course with a dead rangefinder, maybe you’re better off with a traditional battery model.

The good news is that GPS rangefinder battery life has improved significantly since these were first introduced. Most of them will now go at least 10 rounds, if not many more, before needing a charge.

Another thing is that some of these smart rangefinders need to be paired with an app. That means there’s an extra step before you start your round. You’ve got to wait for the GPS to locate your course, you have to select your course and what tee box you’re playing from. You then decide if you’re going to keep score, etc., etc.

If you just prefer a simple, no-fuss rangefinder that you never have to think about until it’s time to get a yardage, a smart rangefinder might not be the right choice for you.

That said, if you are open to the game-improvement benefits that golf technology can unlock, I do think there are very real benefits to be gained by adding a GPS rangefinder to your bag. But not just any one. These are the five smart rangefinders that I’d buy today.

Best Value: Voice Caddie SL2

At first glance, the older SL2 and current SL3 are nearly identical. They share the same laser and GPS display, but the SL3 includes additional green contour and slope features.

Originally retailing for $549, the SL2 is now available on Voice Caddie’s site for $399. Not bad, right?

Well, it gets better. With special Breaking Eighty pricing, you can get an SL3 for $259! That’s an insane deal and as good as any value you’re going to find in golf technology.

This is only going to last until they sell through their remaining stock, and last I heard there were only around 200 units left.

So at $259, the SL2 is really tough to pass up. No, it doesn’t include the green contour and slope features of the SL3. But it’s almost $350 less expensive!

The SL2 won’t be for everyone. Some people aren’t going to want the built-in screen. Others will want some of the functionality of other options on this list. But if you’re in the market for a smart rangefinder and you want the best deal out there, this is it.

Precision Pro Titan Elite: Best Traditional Rangefinder with GPS Data

This might be the best GPS rangefinder for most people: the Precision Pro Titan Elite.

This one’s super convenient in that, once you pair the rangefinder with the Precision Pro app, you can see GPS distances to the front and back of the green right in the view finder. To get that GPS yardage combined with the actual laser-measured shot distance just works really well.

Precision Pro took all of the best features of their previous flagship NX10 rangefinder, as well as their older R1 GPS rangefinder, and combined them into one to make the TItan Elite.

The result? A well-built, highly accurate, and reliable rangefinder that I really enjoy using.

The only knock I’d have on it right now is the price. Considering there are a lot of really good rangefinder options out there for less money, you’re paying a bit of a premium here. But in my experience, it’s worth it for the build quality, and killer warranty/support.

Garmin Approach Z82: Most High-Tech Smart GPS Rangefinder

Alright, if you’re a tech gadget geek, just stop right now and go get the Garmin Approach Z82. 

The Z82 packs more technology into a rangefinder than any other device. It’s unbelievable what this thing can do. Hole maps, hazard data, score keeping, and all right in the viewfinder. There’s honestly no other rangefinder out there like this.

But there are some things about the Z82 that are going to disqualify it as a candidate for many shoppers.

One is the price. Like the Voice Caddie SL3, the Z82 is $599.

The other big thing is that the Z82 is not a traditional rangefinder in the sense that there is no optical glass. Instead, when you look into the viewfinder, you see a digital screen, similar to a mirrorless camera.

On that screen, you get an incredible amount of data. You can scroll through options that include GPS hole maps, yardages, hazard data, and scorekeeping. The amount of information available right in the reticle is insane.

Personally, I find it to be a little distracting at times. Because there is so much stuff in the viewfinder, when I use it, I spend a lot of time choosing between menu options and looking at all the cool stuff. It ends up taking away from the game in a way I don’t really prefer.

The Z82 is also starting to show its age. It’s still got the USB mini connection, and the rechargeable battery life isn’t up to the most current standard. You pretty much have to charge the Z82 every round or two.

Overall, for as cool as the Z82 is, it’s probably not for most people. But for gadget guys, it might be a must-have.

Garmin Approach Z30: Best for Garmin Watch Wearers

Out of all the options on this list, the Garmin Approach Z30 is the one I personally enjoy using the most.

This is a traditional rangefinder, meaning you look through optical glass rather than at a digital screen. But it pairs with the Garmin app to provide GPS data.

But not just any data. The Z30 will display distances from the pin to the front and back of the green. For example, if you see a “16” on the top of the screen and a “4” on the bottom, that means the pin is 4 yards from the front and 16 yards from the back.

Many GPS devices give you yardages to the front, middle, and back of a green, but the way this Z30 factors in the pin’s actual location and shows you how much room you have to work with on either side of your target is awesome.

But the real reason to buy this rangefinder is if you’re someone who regularly wears a Garmin golf watch. That’s because you can pair the Z30 with your watch, and in my experience, once you’ve made that initial connection, it syncs automatically every time you start a round. It just works really well.

Here’s where it gets cool. After shooting the flag, your Garmin watch will update to show you a GPS-mapped green with the exact pin location. You’ll still see the front and back yardages, but now you’ll also have the precise flag position for that day right on your wrist.

And it gets even better. Once you’ve locked in that pin location, the watch remembers it. No matter where you move on the hole, you’ll get updated yardages to the actual pin placement, not just the green in general.

I have had some occasional times where the flag location was slightly off, but it’s always close and hasn’t been a big concern overall.

I will say this isn’t the fastest rangefinder. It can take a couple of seconds to pull in the GPS data.

But if you already use a Garmin watch, this rangefinder honestly feels like magic. Since getting it, I’ve kept it in my bag at all times. Even when testing other rangefinders, I find myself coming back to this one just because of how seamlessly it works with my watch.

Voice Caddie SL2 vs. Precision Pro Titan Elite

After I originally reviewed the SL2, I had a lot of people asking if they should get that rangefinder or the Titan Elite. Really, it depends.

The SL2 is better on paper. You’re getting that dual OLED display and the built-in screen (though I will say that’s one of those love-it-or-hate-it features). Overall, the SL2 really is a nice device.

But as far as just a traditional rangefinder feel, I like the Titan Elite. It’s a little bigger and heavier, so it feels more stable. The target vibration is great. The GPS data is quick and right in the viewfinder. It’s just rock solid, and I really like it.

I personally prefer having my data in the viewfinder, like with the Titan Elite, even if that means sacrificing some of the information I’d get if it were on the screen, like with the SL2.

Really, the Garmin Z30 is the best of both worlds. I can get that data from the flag to the front and back in the viewfinder and then get all the additional data on my watch.

But between the SL2 and Titan Elite, it really comes down to whether you like the extra features and the extra information and are OK with having the screen right there, or whether you just like getting everything you need in the viewfinder.

The other consideration, of course, is price. The Titan Elite is $399. And you can get the SL2 for $259.

So, while I probably prefer the Titan Elite, do I prefer it by an extra $140? No, probably not.

Best Smart Caddie: FlightScope i4 or Bushnell Pro X3 Link

In 2025, we’re seeing a new category of smart rangefinders come out. These new models still use GPS data from an app to factor in things like wind, altitude, and temperature – but they take things a step further with club data.

Both the FlightScope i4 and Bushnell Pro X3 Link will take your actual launch monitor data and make real time club recommendations anywhere on the course.

It’s pretty cool tech, that for the right person can be genuinely useful.

These are both niche products that won’t be for everyone, and which one is best for you comes down to which products you use.

The Bushnell Pro X3 Link is hands down the better rangefinder. But you only get that extra club data when you also use a Foresight GC3, GC3s, or Bushnell LPi. 

The FlightScope on the other hand, works best if you use the Mevo Plus or higher-end XC3, but you can input launch monitor data from another device – so this one is best if you don’t have a launch monitor of your own.

Both are cool, but at $599 for the Bushnell and $499 for the i4 – there’s likely a better option for you unless you’re invested in one of their ecosystems.

Final Thoughts on the 5 Best Smart GPS Rangefinders

You’re definitely going to be in good shape with any of the options from this list. I’ve used them all extensively, and I love each one. These are the contenders as I see it.

If you’re looking for the best value, get the Voice Caddie SL2. At $259, that deal is insane.

If you want a traditional rangefinder experience with a little GPS data thrown in, the Precision Pro Titan Elite is a great choice.

If you wear a Garmin watch, just get the Garmin Approach Z30. Seriously. The experience is seamless.

And if you love the idea of a virtual caddie, then either the FlightScope or Bushnell will provide a very unique experience.

Any of these smart rangefinders are going to be great.

This watch is so jam-packed with features. It’s got everything, including an AMOLED display that looks just as good as the S70’s, and even things the S70 can’t match. All at a $349.99 retail price that’s half of what the S70 costs!

See what I’m saying? In theory, the T11 Pro is a no-brainer and legitimately is the Garmin killer some people have claimed it to be.

But…

Theory and reality don’t always match up.

Now, listen, there’s unquestionably a lot to like about the Voice Caddie T11 Pro. And I’m going to cover all of it.

And there is undoubtedly an outstanding value proposition available to anyone considering this watch. On top of that, with our Breaking Eighty link, you can get the T11 Pro for $299.99. Like I said, the value proposition is legit.

But there are also some things about the T11, especially compared to the Garmin line, that, well, don’t quite measure up. At least not perfectly.

As is so often the case, this golf watch is definitely right for the right golfer but not quite right for another type of golfer. Read on to find out if it’s a fit for you.

First Impressions of the Voice Caddie T11 Pro Golf Watch

I’ve made this point before. I’ve been very impressed with the quality and functionality of the Voice Caddie products of late.

When it comes to their rangefinders and golf watches, they’ve been putting out some wonderful options at some very reasonable prices. I’ve really liked recent products like their TL1 and Laser Fit rangefinders, and I was impressed with the T9 golf watch they released a few years ago.

And that feeling of Voice Caddie quality includes the product packaging and general first impressions. The T11 Pro is no exception.

The design of the packaging, the box itself, the presentation upon opening, it’s all great. Everything about it feels very high quality.

You open the box, and you’ve got the watch itself, a portable charging dock, a user manual, even a strip of stickers, which is kind of a fun extra.

You also get an extra strap. Cool, right?

Well… Kind of.

The strap that comes installed on the T11 is all black. It looks great. But then they include only the top part (from the buckle down to the watchface) of an extra strap. Weird, right? Well, even more weird, at least to me, is that this half-of-a-strap replacement is in all white. So if you do want to use it, you’ve got this two-tone look with white on one half and black on the other. I don’t quite get it.

But, hey, it’s nice that they include the option.

Another oddity is that the packaging includes a charging cradle that’s compatible with USB A-to-C and C-to-C USB charging cables, but they don’t include a cable in the packaging. 

As for the build quality of the watch, I’d rate it as solid. It’s not quite as solid as the Garmin Approach S70 or some of the other high-end Garmin watches. But it’s by no means cheap-feeling.

The T11 is also a bit of a thicker watch. Sitting on the wrist, it’s a higher profile. Even for me, someone that tends to wear chunkier watches, I noticed this one as sitting pretty high on my wrist. So, if you’re someone who prefers a more svelte watch—something more like the new Garmin Approach S44 or S50—this could take some getting used to.

The T11 Pro’s Beautiful AMOLED Display

When you turn on the T11 Pro, the first thing you notice is its gorgeous screen. It’s got an 1,100-nit AMOLED 1.2-inch screen that looks great.

In fact, I’ve got to say that this T11 screen looks just as good as any of the Garmin watches I have. And I’d even rate it as just shy of the very best Apple watches, which is really saying something considering I think they have the definite best-in-class displays for smartwatches.

So, right away, before we even get out onto the golf course or explore all of this watch’s features, there’s already a lot to like.

A quality first impression.

A solid build quality.

A screen that’s every bit as good as the Garmin watches.

Maybe this is the real-deal Garmin killer.

And we haven’t even got to its strongest selling point—value.

The T11 Pro Value Proposition: Where This Watch Really Shines

Considering that’s less than half of the Garmin Approach S70, which is clearly the watch the T11 is gunning for, this watch is quite intriguing.

Even better is the fact that, on paper, the T11 Pro has some features that the S70 doesn’t include. Plus, there are no subscriptions at all with this Voice Caddie golf watch.

So, all of the sudden, we’ve got a really compelling offer on our hands.

But, in practice, is the T11 Pro actually better? Does it work as well as expected? And should you buy it?

Features: The T11 Pro Includes All the Important Stuff

No sense in having a screen this beautiful if you can’t get full-color GPS maps on every golf hole you’re going to play. And, just as you’d expect, the T11 Pro delivers exactly that.

Also on this touchscreen watch, you can click any hazards to get distances to the front and back of each one. You can click any point on the fairway to get distances to specific spots as well as what remains from that spot to the pin.

Also, as is similar to the S70, you can manually input your individual average club distances, and the T11 Pro will show you a halo across the fairway, showing you where your shot would be expected to land. That allows you to strategize and avoid potential trouble spots.

In other words, the T11 Pro includes some of the very same advanced features that make the S70 so special.

Voice Caddie T11 Pro Green Heat Maps

Where the T11 Pro really ramps things up comes with its green data.

You can get green heat maps with a device like the S70 (or S50 and S44 for that matteR), but only if you pay the $9.99 a month or $99 a year Garmin Golf Membership.

With the Voice Caddie T11 Pro, those maps are free. And you actually get even more green data with the T11 than you would with the S70 even if you did pay that Garmin subscription.

So that alone is a huge selling point. In fact, it might be the overall biggest separator for the T11 Pro. More green data for even less money? Not a bad deal.

Let’s look at what that green data includes on the Voice Caddie T11 Pro.

For starters, you’ll get a heat map showing you where the most severe breaks are on each green. Voice Caddie calls it their Smart Approach View.

So, say you’re unfamiliar with a green that you’re hitting into. You can double tap on the watchface and see that shelf or tier that you otherwise wouldn’t know was there. That allows you to more strategically aim at the portion of the green where you’d be better off landing.

Then the T11 Pro takes things even further by helping you to read the green for your putts with Voice Caddie’s Smart Putt View. It will tell you, right on the watchface, that, for example, your putt is uphill to the pin and then downhill after the pin.

There’s even a built-in Long Putt Guide that will help you aim on long putts, taking into account the break on the green. So it will give you instructions like, “Aim left, one club or more.”

These are all incredibly advanced features that are really cool to see in a golf watch that you can get for $300.

But…

Are These Advanced T11 Pro Features Actually Useful?

The question is, how practical are these features? Like, are you really going to use them?

I mean, if I’m on a green lining up my putt, am I really going to be looking at my watch to tell me how the putt is going to break? Probably not. I’m just going to look down at the ground right in front of me and make those determinations from what I can see right on the putting surface.

I don’t need my watch to tell me that it’s uphill to the pin. I’m probably going to be able to see that for myself.

I do think that as you use this watch regularly and become more comfortable with all of its features, you’ll probably find scenarios where some of these green features come in handy. There may be times where you’re not sure what a putt does. Having an extra resource like your watch in that instance could be helpful.

I also think that there’s definite value in the Smart Approach View feature. When you’re playing a course you’ve never played before, being able to see that a green is multi-tiered gives you a way to plan strategically on your approach shots.

But on the whole, for as much as I wanted to love all of these advanced green features, in reality, I just found them to get in the way more than anything else.

Built-In Tempo Mode

Another cool feature on the T11 Pro is an auto shot tempo display. So, after each swing, the watch will give you a Yellow (for too slow), Blue (for just right), or Red (for too fast) readout that tells you how you’re doing with your swing tempo.

I love this as a training tool or for something to use at home when you don’t want to hit balls but just want to work on your tempo.

But in the few rounds that I used this watch, I was annoyed that the watch automatically displays the swing tempo after each shot. It’s a feature that Voice Caddie brags about as a selling point, but I found it to be a nuisance.

Personally, when I’m on the course, I want to focus on my game rather than any adjustments. I really don’t want to know if I’m having swing tempo issues. That’s information I’d prefer to reserve for practice sessions.

Extra Features in the Voice Caddie App

By pairing your T11 Pro with the Voice Caddie app, you can get even more features.

For example, you can use this as a smartwatch and get notifications and text messages directly to your watchface.

You can also get wind speed and direction, which can definitely be useful.

And the Voice Caddie T11 Pro can even give you personalized club recommendations after the app gathers enough shot data if you take the time to input your club selection after each shot. That’s another next-level feature that’s a big-time selling point in a watch at this price point.

Also, it has a built-in shot-tracking feature. So, again, if you take the time to input what club you hit after each shot, the watch will interface with the app to keep track of your performance with each club.

The downside is that the Voice Caddie app experience leaves a little bit to be desired. It’s not as robust, refined, or easy to use as other golf watch apps. And for those reasons, I don’t find myself gravitating to the app to take advantage of these extra features.

I found the plays-like distances on the T11 Pro to be accurate though not quite as advanced as what you get with the S70, where it’s taking wind and other environmental factors into account. But as for slope-adjusted yardages, the T11 Pro is solid.

Comparing the T11 Pro to the Voice Caddie T9 and the New Garmin Options

The T11 Pro is meant as the upgrade to the T9 golf watch that Voice Caddie released a few years ago. Functionality-wise, these two watches are very similar. Essentially, the T11 Pro takes what the T9 does and just does it all much better. Plus, the T11 Pro features a far better screen.

So, the fact that with the Breaking Eighty link you can get the T11 Pro for $300, while the T9 costs $250, I think choosing the T11 Pro is well worth the extra $50.

It’s also interesting to consider how the T11 Pro stacks up against the newest golf watches from Garmin, the S44 and the S50.

After the discount, the T11 Pro is the same $300 as the S44. It also features the same-quality AMOLED display. And a lot of the same limited smartwatch functionality.

But golf features-wise, I think the T11 Pro has the S44 beat. You can upgrade the S44 to access Garmin’s best golf maps, which include green heat maps. But that’s going to require you paying the $9.99 a month or $99 a year Garmin subscription. With the T11 Pro, those features are included without paying a subscription.

The S50, at $399.99, is $100 more than the discounted price of the T11 Pro. But, for the right user, I think it’s well worth the extra money.

The S50 blows the T11 Pro out of the water in terms of fitness and lifestyle features. It is a very impressive watch when it comes to things like sleep, stress, and heart rate monitoring, not to mention all of its ways that it can track pretty much every kind of activity that might be part of your life.

For those reasons, if you’re looking for an around-the-clock watch, I think the S50, even for $100 more, is a better option than the T11 Pro.

Then again, there are golf features that the T11 Pro includes that the S50 can’t match. So, it really comes down to how you intend to use the watch.

The other thing to consider is the size comparison between the new Garmin watches and the T11 Pro. Even though they all have the same 1.2-inch watchface, the T11 Pro is considerably bulkier on the wrist. The S44 and S50, by comparison, are much sleeker and just kind of disappear on your wrist.

Let’s Get Down To It: Should You Buy the Voice Caddie T11 Pro?

The Voice Caddie T11 Pro is one of the most capable and feature-filled watches on the market.

That said, my personal problem with it is that it’s just not the most intuitive or easy to use golf watch.

I don’t like that it’s so reliant on touchscreen navigation. With just one button, I constantly find myself scrolling the wrong way, or trying to figure out where to go, or trying to get data, and it’s just not working the way I expect it to.

To be clear, the more you use this watch, the more familiar you’re going to get with the navigation and the more intuitive it’s going to become for you.

But for me, after three rounds with it, I haven’t been able to crack through to that second-nature level. I find myself trying to get a yardage, and it’s not working. Or I’m trying to go back to enter my score from a few holes ago, and it’s not doing that in a way that I expect it to. Or I’m hitting my shot, and then I’m getting tempo data that I don’t need.

I’ve just found the useability and the user experience to not be nearly as friendly as what I get with comparable Garmin devices.

But the good news is that you’re paying a fraction of the cost of what you’re paying for the Garmin S70. There’s no subscription with the T11 Pro. And, in some ways, this watch has just as many features, if not more, than that similar Garmin.

I also can’t recommend the shot-tracking feature on the T11 Pro. If you’re buying this watch as a substitute for what you can get through a system like Arccos or Shot Scope or Garmin’s CT sensors, I wouldn’t. The built-in shot tracking on the T11 Pro isn’t robust or accurate enough, and you can’t get the granular data detail you’ll find in those better options.

Final Thoughts on the Voice Caddie T11 Pro

The bottom line is that this golf watch represents one of the absolute best values in the world of golf GPS’s.

And I think that the more you use this watch and become familiar with the navigation and its features, the more some of my complaints will become non-issues. I just haven’t personally been able to get there. And part of that is probably because I’ve just used Garmin watches for so long.

I don’t think the T11 Pro is a great option if you’re looking for a smartwatch that you want to wear around the clock. The size is a bit too big, and the smartwatch functions are a bit too limited. But you totally can do that if you choose to.

Is the T11 Pro a perfect device? No.

But does it represent one of the best, if not the best, values in the golf watch world? Absolutely. Especially considering you can get the T11 Pro for $299.99 here.

So if you want a high-quality golf watch with cool features that isn’t nearly as expensive as the Garmin S70, this is definitely one I would consider.

Honestly, my initial reaction was, “Why?”

I just didn’t see where the S50 fit in Garmin’s line. They seemed to have it covered with their budget S12, mid-tier S44 (the upgraded replacement to the S42), and their top-end S70 (the upgrade to the on-the-way-out S62).

I wondered, how does a $400 S50 that seems at first glance, to be a confused mashup of all these watches really fit?

And then I started using it, wearing it, testing it. And, man, have I changed my tune.

Not only do I think the S50 fits. I think it stands out. In fact, I think it just might be the best golf smartwatch for most people.

Let me give you all my reasons for coming to that conclusion in this, my full review of the Garmin S50. I’m going to tell you what I like and what I don’t. And I’ll compare the S50 to some of Garmin’s other golf watches to help you decide if this is a golf watch worth buying.

Let’s get into it.

First Impressions of the Garmin Approach S50

I’ve said it many times before, Garmin’s already got such a good reputation that they don’t need to go above and beyond with packaging and presentation.

You know you’re going to get quality when you see the brand name.

And that’s exactly what you get with the S50. The box features the exact same design as all of the other Garmin golf watches, with the same graphics layout as all of their tech products.

And, sure enough, inside you find the quality that you’d expect.

Actually, when I first picked up the Garmin S50, I thought, “Oh, it’s so nice and cute and so much smaller than the other Garmin watches I’ve used.”

The S50 is a 42 mm golf watch with a 1.2-inch face diameter.

There’s actually a version of Garmin’s flagship dedicated golf watch, the S70, with that same size-sized watchface. But the practical wearability of those two watches is quite a bit different.

The S70 is considerably thicker than the S50. Whereas the S70 is a bit chunky when you wear it, the S50 kind of just disappears on your wrist.

The S50 is also Garmin’s first golf watch to come with a nylon ComfortFit band, which adds to that lower profile.

Everything about the Garmin S50 just feels more sleek, more svelte, and, overall, a little bit smaller.

Personally, I really like the look and feel of the S50 and the nylon band. I like how low profile it is.

But, keep in mind, if you’re planning to go swimming with this watch or plan to wear it in the shower, that nylon band is going to take a bit longer to dry out than the standard-issue silicone band.

But considering there is no shortage of watch bands and accessories that you can get from Garmin or from third parties on Amazon for not much money, this is probably a non-issue.

Favorite S50 Features I Noticed Right Away

Both the S50 and Garmin’s new S44 have Garmin’s AMOLED screen, which was first introduced with the S70. This screen looks absolutely fantastic.

One of my big complaints with the older-model, mid-tier Garmin golf watches was that they had that dated MIP display that just wasn’t very bright and crisp and just really didn’t look very good in a modern setting. Especially if you were coming from an Apple watch where you’re used to that big, vibrant screen.

I think it’s very exciting that Garmin is now including their AMOLED screen with all of their new watches. It’s a big deal to get that quality of a screen in the $300 S44 and $400 S50, considering that you used to have to go all the way up to the minimum-$650 S70 to get that kind of display.

And, like I said, on the S50, this AMOLED screen looks excellent. The colors pop. The screen is super responsive. And it might be because the S50 is a little bit smaller, but to my eye, it even looks a bit brighter and crisper than the Fenix 8, which is Garmin’s flagship fitness watch that costs almost three times as much.

Another feature I noticed right away was the 1 through 18 markings around the S50’s bezel. It’s just a really nice way to keep track of your score when you’re playing. Next to each number, as you enter your score, it will have a different color based on what your score was on that hole in relation to par. I really like being able to see those trends throughout my rounds.

That’s one of my favorite Garmin golf watch features compared to their more broad fitness watches, like the Fenix 8 or the older Epix line, that don’t include those 18 golf hole numbers around the bezel.

Getting Started With and Navigating Through the Garmin S50

Pairing the S50 with the Garmin Golf app is simple. It’s super seamless, and after you do it the first time, it works flawlessly.

Another thing I really like about the overall Garmin ecosystem, as someone who has multiple Garmin watches and devices, is that you can easily switch between Garmin products and it will automatically upload the data. They make it very easy to be a Garmin power user.

I recently did a video about how I’ve gone all in on Garmin over the past year:

One thing you’ll notice about the Garmin golf watch line is that, the more expensive the watch, the more buttons that are included. For instance, Garmin’s flagship golf watch, the S70, includes three buttons. And when you get to the Fenix line, you actually get five buttons.

As someone who likes physical buttons and prefers not to have to use a touchscreen for all of my watch navigation, I really like watches that give you more buttons.

With the S50 and the S44, you only have two buttons. And even though I do prefer more buttons, I’ve actually found navigation with the S50 to be pretty straightforward.

Again, the touchscreen is very responsive. And once I figured out that a long hold of the start button unlocks all of the settings and options for the watch, everything got a lot smoother.

As you’d expect in a dedicated Garmin golf watch, getting started with a round is very easy. You hit the start button. You’ll see an option to “Play Golf.” You tap that, and away you go.

The watch’s internal GPS will locate all of the courses in the area and give you options in order of the proximity to where you’re standing. So, almost always, the first choice will be the golf course that you’re physically at when you hit that start button.

The watch is preloaded with more than 43,000 golf courses, so it’s highly unlikely that you’re going to arrive at a course that’s not an option with the S50.

Garmin S50 vs. Garmin S44

Golf-wise, out of the box, the Garmin S50, for $399.99, isn’t too much different from the S44, which costs $299.99.

The one golf feature difference between the two is that the S50 includes basic plays-like distances, meaning it will factor elevation into the yardages to your targets.

Beyond that, the S50 and S44 are the same in terms of golf features. Both include things like:

• Yardages to front/middle/back
• Yardages to layups and doglegs
• Shot distance measurement if you prompt the watch after you hit
• Digital scorecard
• Compatibility with Garmin’s CT-10 and CT-1 shot tracking sensors
• Green view with manual pin position
• PinPointer, which allows you to see where the green is located on blind shots
• Swing tempo

The thing about Garmin golf watches is that they work. Like, flawlessly. They are totally dependable. You know exactly what you’re going to get.

The pairing with the app, when you want to use it for things like shot data storage or to upload your scores, is seamless. All of the features work as advertised. It’s easy and intuitive to move from feature to feature. When it’s Garmin, it just works.

But if the S44 is $299.99 and the S50 is $399.99 and the only golf feature difference is the plays-like distances that come included with the S50, why would anyone pay an extra $100 just for that one feature?

It’s because the S50 provides far more than $100 worth of off-the-course benefits.

Which brings me to my original point.

Why I Think the Garmin Approach S50 Is the Best Golf Smartwatch for Most People

If you just want a great Garmin golf watch, I’d get the S44. The new AMOLED screen is awesome, and the $100 savings compared to the S50 makes it a simple choice.

It’s when you want more than just a plain golf watch that the S50 really shines. In fact, it shines so brightly that I think more people are likely to choose the S50 than any other Garmin golf watch.

The big reason is that the S50 includes a heart rate monitor, whereas the S44 does not. That allows the S50 to do all  kinds of fitness and activity tracking that the S44 can’t do.

That means things like:

• Daily resting heart rate
• Abnormal heart rate alert
• Respiration rate
• Fitness age
• Body Battery
• Stress tracking
• Relaxation reminders
• Meditation and breathwork
• Sleep tracking, analysis, and coaching
• Hydration

So while the S50 doesn’t have all of the advanced fitness tracking and the built-in maps or overall ruggedness of the fenix series, it does have just about all of the health and fitness features that you were going to find in the S70, which costs almost twice as much as the S50.

So, why would you pay so much more for the S70 when the S50 exists?

Garmin S50 vs Garmin S70

First of all, the S70 comes in both 42 mm and 47 mm options. So if you like a bigger watch, the S70 is going to be your better golf watch choice.

But the biggest difference is that, out of the box, the S70 includes more golf features than the S50. The most obvious thing you’ll notice is that, with the S70, the graphics and detail quality on the hole maps are much better than with the S50.

The hole maps on the S70 are just much more representative of what the in-person golf holes actually look like.

With the S50, the hole maps are far more basic.

Another difference is that, with the S50, when you’re scrolling between bunker and hazard distances, you’re not able to use the physical buttons like you can with the S70. With the S50, you have to use the touchscreen.

Also, with the S70, the plays-like distances are more advanced and take into account things like altitude, weather, and wind. On the S50, the plays-like distances are only factoring in slope data.

And finally, the S70 comes with a virtual caddie right out of the box. So the watch itself can track your shots and, over time, learn your game and eventually even make personalized club recommendations. Out of the box, the S50 can’t do that.

So, clearly, the Garmin S70 is the superior golf watch, right?

Well…

It’s Compatible with Garmin Accessories

As Garmin has evolved it’s eco-system, they’ve got a number of products that play well together to improve your call experience and data collection.

Perhaps the coolest device is the Approach Z30 rangefinder. This pairs with the S50 to give you GPS yardages to the green and pin directly in your rangefinder.

For instance, you can shoot the pin, and then on your watch it will show you exactly where the pin is on the green. It then remembers that location, so as you continue playing the hole, the yardage to the pin will update in real time.

It’s even cooler in person, and feels kind of like magic.

If you’re interested in enhanced shot tracking, you can pair the S50 with both the new CT1 sensors, and the higher end CT10 sensors to track every single shot you hit.

The data you’re able to get is amazing. The experience isn’t quite as good as what you get from Arccos, but it’s still well worth considering if you have a compatible Garmin watch like this one.

Here’s Where Things Get Interesting: You Can Upgrade the S50

For the first time ever, Garmin is giving you the option to upgrade your golf watch, specifically with their new S44 and S50 models.

That means that if you pay the $9.99-per-month or $99-per-year Garmin subscription, you can make it so that your Garmin S50 has all of the golf features that the Garmin S70 has. The only exception being wind speed and direction factoring into your plays-like distances – that’s still limited to the higher end watches.

So, all of the sudden, we’ve got a sleeker, potentially more comfortable, and certainly less-expensive-out-of-the-box S50 that can, basically, do everything that the higher-priced S70 can do.

Personally, I love this. I know people hate subscriptions, and I get that. I’m one of those people. But I see this as an opportunity. It allows you to choose whether or not you want the extra data or the enhanced experience.

Or, maybe you don’t want or need these extras initially but don’t want to close the door on the possibility of adding them down the road. With the S50, you now have that flexibility.

And at $99 a year, I think it’s actually a pretty good value considering that this works across all of your Garmin devices. Let’s say you have a Garmin Approach R10 or R50. That same subscription is going to get you Home Tee Hero access, which allows you to play simulated rounds on more than 43,000 golf courses.

The subscription also gives you green contour data on your golf watch, meaning you can see the breaks on all of the greens that you’re playing.

The subscription really provides quite a lot of features and benefits. And the deeper you are in the Garmin ecosystem, the better value it becomes.

So, if you know that you just want a really solid, svelte golf watch that’s going to do a great job, the S50 is an awesome option. But if at some point you decide that you want things like the virtual caddie or the better-looking graphics, you’ve got the option to upgrade.

And comparing the $400 S50 to the $700 S70, you could own the S50 and pay the annual subscription and it would take you three years to catch up to the price of the S70.

You have the same upgrade options with the S44, but with that watch, I’m not sure it’s such a great deal. With the S50, for the right user, I think it’s actually pretty compelling.

To me, the reasons why someone might still prefer the S70 comes down to size and buttons. If you like the idea of a larger watch, the 47 mm version of the S70 remains the choice. And if, like me, you prefer button navigation, the S70’s three buttons versus the S50’s two means that the S70 is the better option.

On a personal note, I’m wearing a watch 98% of the time. Usually it’s the larger Fenix 8 or a mechanical watch. I was kind of excited to try out the smaller S50, and thought it might be a really good change of pace.

For me personally, I do find it a little bit too small. Not due to screen size or anything like that, it just feels a little dainty on my wrist for lack of a better term. So just something to think about if you have larger wrists or prefer larger watches.

Should You Buy the S50?

I think the Garmin S50 is a very compelling package.

While I didn’t initially think that Garmin needed another golf watch tier, the S50 does fit a very specific use case that I think is going to resonate with a lot of people.

If you just want a good-looking golf watch that fits great, has a beautiful screen, is going to allow you to keep score, get yardages, and do all of the basic golf functions, get the Garmin S44. For $300, it’s excellent.

If you want all of those things but you also want a watch that’s going to track your health, fitness, stress, sleep, activities, and a lot more, and if you like the idea of being able to upgrade the golf features, then the S50 for $100 more is a no-brainer.

So where does that leave the S70?

Well, honestly, it’s now a little bit tougher for me to recommend Garmin’s flagship golf watch, considering you’re able to get so much of what the S70 provides with the S50.

Yes, you’d have to pay the $99-a-year subscription to get those advantages with the S50. But a lot of Garmin users are already paying that subscription for things like the added green contour features and Home Tee Hero simulation option.

Again, size options and more buttons do remain as advantages for the S70 and the reason that, for some golfers, it’s still the clear-cut winner.

But for most golfers who are looking for fitness features and a kilelr golf watch? I think the S50 may be the move.

And if I’m looking for even more robust fitness features and more of a lifestyle watch that’s really getting into the nitty gritty of tracking my health and fitness, personally, I’m probably going to spend a little bit more and go for the Garmin Fenix 8, which has been my daily driver for all of those reasons. It’s expensive, sure, at over $1,000, but it gives you way more quality of life, fitness tracking, and health features.

When you shake it all out, I see the S50 as the way to go for a lot of people. It really does hit that sweet spot in the Garmin line.

Final Thoughts on the Garmin Approach S50

If you’re trying to figure out whether to buy the S50, you’re probably also comparing that watch to the S44, S70, and maybe even something from the higher-end lines, like the Fenix 8. Hopefully, this review has helped you with those comparisons.

I’ve used all of these watches extensively. What I can tell you is that there are no wrong answers. All of them are great, it just depends on what you’re looking for.
