There’s so much information out there, much of it conflicting, that it’s hard to cut through the noise to get to the essence of what you should really be considering if you’re going to buy one of these devices.

There is no one-size-fits-all best.

There’s only what’s best for you.

But if you’ve never owned a launch monitor, how are you supposed to know what “best” even means in this context?

10 Questions to Answer Before Buying a Golf Launch Monitor (or Simulator)

Yeah, shopping for a launch monitor can be a ton of fun. But it can also be really daunting and confusing.

I’ve narrowed it down to what I think are the 10 key questions you need to answer before you buy a golf launch monitor. If you satisfy each one of these criteria, you’re definitely going to have a launch monitor that’s right for you. So, keep reading.

1. Why Do You Want One?

Seriously. It may sound like an obvious question, but not enough people stop to consider it.

So, really, why do you want a golf launch monitor? Like, what are you planning to do with it?

There are no wrong answers, but you need to resolve this question. Are you buying this to get better? To have fun? To play golf in the offseason? Is it to play simulator golf with your buddies?

Of course, it’s almost certainly a combination of all of those things. But it’s important that you identify the primary driving reason you want a launch monitor, as different devices lend themselves to certain use cases better than others.

2. Where Are You Going to Use a Launch Monitor?

We talked about the why. Next is the where.

So, are you planning to use this in your house? Or out in the yard with a hitting net? Or are you looking for something that you can take out to the range for practice sessions? Maybe you want a launch monitor that’s flexible enough to do all of those things.

You want to get really specific in thinking through where you’re planning to use your launch monitor.

For example, if you’re going to use this out on the range, what type of range is it? Will you be hitting only off of natural grass? Because there are certain launch monitors that do better at reading shots hit off of real turf. You don’t want to buy a device and then realize later that it’s limited to only mat use – or worse, is indoor only.

Is the driving range one of those multiple-story facilities with lots of metal surrounding it? If so, a Doppler radar device is most likely going to have interference issues in that environment.

So having a very specific answer to your “where” question is going to make all of the rest of these questions a lot easier to answer.

3. How Much Space Do You Have?

Piggybacking off of the “why” and the “where” questions, do you plan to use your launch monitor indoors?

If so, you need to understand that different devices have different space requirements.

Say you’re considering the Bushnell Launch Pro. That’s an optical device that uses high-speed cameras to collect your shot data. So because of that, it requires a lot less space than if you’re using a Doppler radar-based system, which has to be placed several feet behind the ball and needs enough space in front of the ball to accurately track what that ball is doing.

If you’ve got tight quarters and you don’t have 7 or 8 feet of space behind the ball plus another 7 or 8 feet of space available in front of the ball, then a lot of those Doppler radar-based options are not going to be the right fit and are only going to lead to frustration.

Or maybe you’ve got plenty of space. In that case, a Doppler radar device might be perfect. They provide a lot of flexibility, features, and bang for the buck.

All that to say, space is a huge consideration. You need the right type of device for where you’re going to be using it most.

Oh, and one thing, don’t forget to measure your ceiling height. Nothing would be more frustrating than to buy a launch monitor, get it all set up, and then put a hole in your ceiling because you didn’t plan properly.

Trust me, I’ve been there.

4. Which Technology Do You Prefer?

Assuming space isn’t a dictating factor, is there a technology that you prefer?

There are two main types of golf launch monitor technology: Doppler radar and optical cameras. Some devices use a combination of both.

As I mentioned, a Doppler radar device is something you’re going to place behind the ball, and it’s going to need more space than an optical camera device.

An optical device is going to be placed right next to the golf ball. So for that type of launch monitor, you only need enough room behind you to swing your golf club freely, and you only need about 8 feet in front of you.

So, generally speaking, an optical device is going to require about half as much space as a radar device.

But if you’re trying to spend less than $1,000 or $1,500, the only good optical solution is probably the Square Golf Launch Monitor. So budget, which we’ll discuss below, may be a deciding factor as to which type of technology you go with.

Now, it’s not like optical is always superior to radar. For instance, kind of the gold standard of launch monitors is Trackman, which costs upwards of $30,000 or $40,000, and it is a Doppler radar launch monitor.

Another leader in the space is the $20,000 Foresight QuadMAX, which is an optical launch monitor.

The point is that there are very good, very high-end, very accurate devices available in either the optical or radar camps. It really comes down to what is going to be right for you, your needs, your space, your budget.

But one thing you need to consider is, who will be using this launch monitor?

If you go with an optical device, which sits across from where you’re hitting, that’s really only going to be the right choice if you plan to play with all right- or all left-handed players.

Because, otherwise, you’re going to have to move the launch monitor every time the opposite-handed player takes their turn. Playing a round of simulator golf with a group of people really isn’t going to be a great experience if you’re having to constantly change your setup.

If that’s something you envision doing often, you’re probably better off going with a Doppler radar launch monitor that sits behind you and can very easily accommodate both types of golfers.

The other alternative is if you’re planning to set up a higher-end, dedicated simulator studio, you can use an overhead device. These are optical launch monitors that hang above the hitting area, so they can easily cater to both right- and left-handed golfers.

So if you’re looking for ultimate convenience, an overhead device is the way to go. But they’re also very expensive. At minimum, you’re looking at a spend of about $5,000, which is a much higher minimum than you’d find with either a Doppler or optical unit.

And an overhead device won’t afford you the flexibility of using your launch monitor anywhere beyond in that dedicated space.

5. What’s Your Budget?

This one might be the most important question to answer and the biggest differentiator in helping you decide what options are available to you.

As you might have realized from looking around at launch monitors, these things can cost anywhere from a couple hundred dollars all the way up to 20, 30, 40, 50 thousand dollars, or even more.

In many cases, it’s not just the cost of the launch monitor that you need to consider. This is where we start to see our previous questions funneling down into this one.

For instance, maybe you just want a launch monitor to take out in your backyard. Cool. For under $500, you can get a device that’s going to be reasonably accurate and make practice more fun.

But guess what? You’re still going to need a net to hit into. And you’re going to need a mat to hit off of. All of that needs to factor into your budget.

Another consideration is special golf balls. In many cases, if you want accurate spin data, you need specially marked balls, and they’re kind of expensive. Titleist RCT balls, for instance, cost $70 a dozen.

So, how much should you plan to spend on a golf launch monitor?

If you’re just looking for something that you can take out to the range and have some fun with, you can do it for around $500.

If you’re looking for a nice backyard setup with a net and a mat, you can probably get it done for under $1,000. But I’d recommend budgeting for between $1,000 and $2,000 to make sure you’re getting everything that you need.

If you’re planning to build a simulator studio at home, I think the absolute minimum I’d plan on is about $2,000, but that’s for a fairly janky setup. That might be like if you were using a TV that you already own and didn’t need to buy a projector.

All of the accessories needed to do a sim studio right can add up very quickly and make that cost much more expensive.

If you’re trying to achieve something that’s close to a professional setup, something that really feels like a proper simulator studio, you should probably expect to spend at least $7,500. That’s taking into account all of the things—the launch monitor, the mat, the projector, the impact screen, the special golf balls.

The good news is now there are very good “sim in a box” type packages you can get with all of the most popular launch monitors, that will make this pretty easy.

So while you can do an indoor setup on a budget, just make sure you’re factoring in all of the things you’ll need and how professional you want your setup to look and feel.

As for the launch monitors themselves in a pseudo-professional-type setup, if you’re looking for a basic Doppler radar device, I’d expect to spend a minimum of $500 to $1,000.

That’s going to get you in the range of launch monitors like the Voice Caddie SC4 Pro, the Garmin Approach R10, and the Rapsodo MLM2PRO.

On the optical side in the budget range, you’re pretty much limited to the Square Golf Launch Monitor.

If you have a little bit more money to spend, the FlightScope Mevo+ is my overall best recommendation. If you use our coupon code (BREAKINGEIGHTYPLUS) and if they have any current sales going, you’re going to be able to get that between $1,800-$1,900. And then there are going to be some add-ons if you want extra features and data.

The Mevo+ is my favorite middle-of-the-road device that can do just about everything at a great price point. But, it being a radar device, you need to make sure you have enough space. The Mevo+ is going to need about 15 feet, all-in, for it to record accurate data.

Other than with the Square, if you’re looking for an optical launch monitor, you should plan to spend at least $2,000.

If you can still find one, the outgoing Bushnell Launch Pro ball data only model retails for right around two grand.

It’s being replaced with the Bushnell LPi. It’s similar, but the major differences are that there is no screen, it’s indoor only, but it does come with club data. It will retail for $2,799.

The SkyTrak+ retails for $3,000, but you can often find it for around $2,500.

Then there’s the Uneekor Eye Mini Lite for $2,749.

So, for a good optical device, at minimum you’re probably going to be in that $2,000 to $3,000 range.

For an overhead device, plan to spend $5,000 or quite a bit more.

6. Are You OK with a Subscription?

There’s another budget consideration for you, and that is everyone’s favorite topic: subscriptions.

Most of these golf launch monitors are going to require a subscription, at least if you want to use all of the features they’re capable of or if you want to use them to play third-party simulator software.

As frustrating as that may be, that’s the nature of the game.

Subscription costs can range from a fairly nominal hundred bucks a year up to $500 a year for the FSX software with the subscription-based Foresight Sports or Bushnell launch monitors.

There are subscription-free Foresight launch monitors, but for the GC3S or Bushnell LPi, if you want to use pretty much any software, whether on an iPad or gaming PC, you’re going to have to spend $500 a year.

(The Foresight GC3 doesn’t have a subscription, but does cost thousands more.)

So, as you’re thinking about which launch monitor is right for you, make sure you take the time to research all of the various subscription rates. That’s going to have a big impact on your year-over-year budgeting. The actual cost of ownership over five years may be significantly more than you initially thought.

Now, if you’re just totally opposed to paying a subscription, you do have some options.

One is the Voice Caddie SC4 Pro for around $500.

Another is the Rapsodo MLM2PRO, which is $699 with a subscription fee of $199, but they recently made it so that for $500, you can unlock it for life. So for $1,200 all-in, you can get the Rapsodo MLM2PRO, which is a pretty good deal.

The FlightScope Mevo+ is another device without a subscription. And for all the features that it offers, that’s really one of its biggest selling points.

The Square is another subscription-free device. But you do have to buy credits for every hole of simulator golf you want to play. These are affordable though, and it comes with enough to play 55 full rounds.

When you get to the higher end, there are options from Foresight Sports like the GC3, GCQuad, and QuadMAX.

So, if you don’t want a subscription fee at all, those are the devices I’d take a look at.

7. How Accurate Do You Want It to Be?

Obviously, everyone is looking for the best accuracy. But how much are you willing to pay for improved accuracy?

As you might imagine, when you have launch monitors ranging in price from $200 to $50,000, there are going to be different levels of accuracy.

A lot of the budget launch monitors can do a fairly decent job of getting reasonably close. And for a lot of people, that’s close enough to get a general idea of some of your numbers, which legitimately can help you better understand what’s going on with your golf swing.

Just keep in mind that with a lot of those cheaper devices, the data metrics aren’t actually measured. Instead, they’re calculated using an algorithm.

So devices like the MLM2PRO, the R10, the SC4 Pro, they’re going to have four to six metrics that they’re actually going to measure, and then the rest are going to be calculated. So, essentially, it’s their best guess at what those numbers should be.

As I said, under the right conditions, all of those devices actually do a fairly good job with those guesses. But you should know that they are in fact algorithm-generated guesses.

A general rule of thumb is: The more you’re willing to pay, the more accurate the launch monitor is going to be and the more metrics that it’s going to directly measure as opposed to calculate.

Getting back to our first question, why do you want a golf launch monitor?

Are you just looking to have some fun and want simulator golf to be relatively realistic? Then you don’t need a device that’s perfectly accurate.

On the other hand, if you’re a teaching professional, club fitter, or competitive player, then accuracy is going to be very important. And you’re going to need to spend more money on your device.

In my experience, I’ve found that most people don’t need the absolute supreme level of accuracy.

Every device I’ve mentioned so far, when set up properly, is going to be reasonably accurate.

And that “set up properly” caveat is key. I’ve gotten dozens of emails for literally every one of these devices saying that it’s not accurate or it doesn’t work.

And for all of the same products, I’ve also received dozens of emails from people saying how great the product is, how dead-on accurate it is, how happy they are with their purchase.

The difference between those two experiences, especially with these less-expensive units, comes down to making sure you’re using them in the proper conditions and are taking the time to set them up correctly.

8. What Statistics Are Most Important to You?

This question is related to most of the other questions, including why you want a launch monitor, what kind of budget you have, and how accurate you need it to be.

Do you only really care about learning how far the ball is going with each of your clubs? Great. You can spend quite a bit less than the person who really needs club path data and accurate spin numbers and angle of attack and all of those advanced sorts of metrics.

When you’re shopping for a golf launch monitor, look carefully at what data it includes. Also, pay attention to whether those metrics are actually measured or if they are calculated.

Here’s an example of where people often get surprised. The SkyTrak+ is one of the most popular launch monitors on the market. But guess what? As of March 2025, It doesn’t include angle of attack. And a lot of SkyTrak+ owners don’t figure that out until after they’ve bought the launch monitor.

For a $3,000 device, and for as important as that metric is for a lot of people, not having angle of attack on the SkyTrak+ has led to some frustration.

Many devices also differentiate between ball-only data and club data. So if you want things like carry distance, total distance, spin numbers, and apex, you’re going to be able to get those for less than if you also want club data.

If on the other hand, you want the whole D-Plane suite where you’re getting face-to-path, face-to-target, club path, etc., you’re going to need to spend a little bit more.

For instance, with the FlightScope Mevo+, you have the option to pay for the Pro Package, which is what unlocks all of that advanced club data.

With a unit like the new indoor-only Bushnell LPi, you pay $2,799 and for the first year, you get both ball and club data included. But after that, you have to pay that $500 a year subscription if you want to keep the club data.

It’s important with any of these launch monitors that you fully understand exactly what you’re getting and that it satisfies what you need.

If you don’t care about club statistics, there’s a good chance that you can save some money.

9. What Device Will You Use It On?

Now we’re talking about computer compatibility.

There are some launch monitors with built-in displays that don’t require you to interface with a phone, tablet, or PC. You can just turn on the device and get all of your shot data right on the unit’s display.

The SC4 Pro is one example on the budget side. As for more expensive models, you’ve got the Foresight Sports launch monitors and the Uneekor Eye Mini.

All of those options have built-in screens, which means you can get your numbers with nothing more than the device itself.

But chances are, if you’re spending all of this money, you’re hoping to get the most out of it. And to do that, you’re going to need to interface with an app or a computer program that’s designed to go with the launch monitor.

Most of these devices that I’ve mentioned will have phone apps that you can use to track all of your data and progress over time.

Some of these devices will also have a mobile simulator option. Usually, this means access to something like E6 Connect, where you can play a selection of simulated golf courses on your iPhone or iPad. For this type of setup, you don’t need any additional fancy equipment to play real simulator golf.

But if you’re looking to go all the way and you’re trying to get that true, more professional simulator setup, then there’s a good chance you’re going to need a gaming PC to run the required software.

Of course, that’s going to require you to spend quite a bit more money.

So getting a handle on how different launch monitors work with different simulator software choices and the system requirements that come with those pairings is a really important consideration for your budget as well as what you’re going to be able to do with your launch monitor.

10. What Software Do You Want to Use?

Is there any specific software you are hoping to use?

That’s going to be a key question to answer before you make your launch monitor decision.

Not all of these devices are compatible with the same software packages.

Do all of your friends have GSPro, and do you want to be able to compete against them in online tournaments? Then obviously you’re going to need to make sure your launch monitor is compatible with GSPro.

Do you like the idea of just being able to use your phone to connect to something like E6 Connect?

Or maybe you like the convenience of a little less-realistic simulator solution like Garmin’s Home Tee Hero or Rapsodo’s Courses feature, where you can play nearly simulator golf on more than 42,000 different courses.

Or maybe you don’t really care about playing simulator golf. But you want to make sure the native app that you use is going to provide a really enjoyable and useful practice experience.

All of these are important considerations. They really do play into how much you’re going to enjoy using the launch monitor you choose.

So make sure you do a little bit of research on the software options you’ll have with each device. That just might make the difference between loving or hating a golf launch monitor.

Not only is the Square the best optical launch monitor under $1,000, it’s also the best (and maybe the only) under $2,000 as well.

At $699 the new Square packs a ton of value in a very small package. It even comes with a separate swing stick that allows you to play even if you’re limited on ceiling height.

While its software is lacking some key features and the build quality is mediocre at best, the reality is that this device is going to be the right fit for a lot of more casual golfers looking to play sim golf as affordably as possible.

Best User Interface: SkyTrak+

Most of the devices in this list can provide great home simulator experiences.

But in my testing, the SkyTrak+ might provide the most enjoyable overall user experience if you’re building a home simulator.

For starters, while it has Doppler built in, the SkyTrak+ primarily uses cameras to track data. This means it sits next to the ball, rather than behind it – taking up much less space than the Mevo Plus or MLM2Pro.

The user-interace is also the most modern and enjoyable to use out of any of these devices as well.

Accuracy is close to the Bushnell Launch Pro, which is the most accurate device on the list.

And to top it off it comes with both a mobile and PC license for E6 Connect simulator software. And for a little bit more a year, you can use their native simulator – which is excellent.

The downsides are that you can’t use it on grass outdoors, and doesn’t feel quite as “pro” as the Mevo Plus or Bushnell. But if you want to set up a home simulator, have limited space, and want a device that simply works, and works well? The SkyTrak+ is an excellent choice.

Of all the launch monitors on this list, this definitely leans the most into “professional” territory. 

The Bushnell Launch Pro is built on the GC3 Platform, and performs identically to that. 

The Launch Pro uses a high-tech camera system rather than Doppler to give you data. This makes it one of the most accurate units of any launch monitor I’ve tested.

Even better, Bushnell has completely changed their pricing structure, and it’s now more affordable than ever before. You can get a ball-data enabled unit for right around $2k, and with that you get a free year of their Gold membership.

The downside? After that, it’s $500/year, and you’ll need to have it if you want to use any simulator features.

If you’re looking for a semi-permanent simulator setup, or you want a professional-level device that’s a little more budget-friendly? 

This is the launch monitor for you.

Just keep in mind, it’s not as easy to setup as some of the others, and if you want to use it as a simulator beyond just your iPad? You’ll need a gaming PC in order to do it.

Also worth noting, Bushnell is phasing this product out in favor of the new LPi. I’ve left it on this list for the time being because I think it represents a great value for a professional level device. I also don’t love the offering of the LPi, and think this will be a better and more versatile fit for most people.

This may feel like a weird category to put the Uneekor, but hear me out. While it’s not super portable, if you want to grind away on the range and get professional quality numbers? This device is fantastic.

It performs similarly in features and accuracy to the Launch Pro, but I’ve found its e-ink screen to be easier to read, and the fact it provides 10 metrics rather than the 6 on the Bushnell to be preferable.

When it comes to the sub-$500 launch monitor market the Mevo and the Rapsodo MLM are the two I hear about the most.

I give the edge to FlightScope for simplicity and accuracy.

But in terms of features? The Rapsodo is the winner.

And considering Rapsodo recently dropped the MSRP from $499 to $299? This becomes the no-brainer pick for entry-level launch monitor.

For one, it has lateral data, and will show you a shot tracer view of every ball you hit.

Just the lateral data alone may be enough for some people to choose it over the Mevo. It also has a robust social experience with games you can play against other Rapsodo users. 

I haven’t found the metrics to be quite as reliable as other devices, but it’s usually still in the right ballpark. It’s also nice that the design allows the phone to sit upright, so you can see the data easily.

To be clear, for around $500, the Garmin Approach R10 is fantastic. And when it came out in 2021, there was nothing under $1,000 that could touch it.

Some Things to Consider Before You Buy

What is a Golf Launch Monitor?

First off, you may have stumbled upon this article and found yourself thinking “what the heck is a launch monitor?”

Simply put, a golf launch monitor is a Doppler radar or camera-based device that measures various metrics about your golf shots. This can include carry distance, swing speed, ball speed, spin rate, and many more.

You set the launch monitor behind or to the side of your ball on a range, garage, or simulator – and either in a compatible app or on the device itself, it gives you all of the info you could want to know about a golf swing.

What metrics a launch monitor provides, how accurate the data is, and what additional features the device has will vary wildly depending on the price point.

Are There Specific Features or Specs You Should Be Looking For?

Every single golfer is going to look for something slightly different in a launch monitor.

Are you a scratch golfer who is grinding to dial in his wedges down to the nearest yard? Then accuracy is going to be really important to you.

Are you a 15 handicap who gets bored on the range and you’re just looking for a way to make practice more enjoyable? You’re going to want a launch monitor that’s easy to use, and also has some fun bonus features.

Are you setting up a simulator in your garage for off-season play and practice? You’ll want to make sure it’s compatible with your simulator software of choice.

To make matters more complicated, prices for launch monitors run from $200 to $30,000 or more.

So before deciding which device you want, it’s really important to understand what you’re looking for, as well as what your budget is.

When considering a golf launch monitor here are some of the things you should be considering:

• Accuracy – How close do you really need the numbers to be? Within a yard every time? Or are you ok with numbers that are in the right ballpark?
• Portability – Are you setting your device up in the garage and then not touching it? Or will you be taking it out to the range on a regular basis?
• Price – What features do you need, and is it really worth the extra money to jump from a device in the $500 range to spending $2,000 or more? Also, take note of whether or not there is a recurring subscription fee to use the device.
• Ease of use – You want a device you’ll use, and if you’re someone who won’t use something that is less user-friendly, this is worth considering.
• Simulator Compatibility – Is your primary purpose to use this as a simulator? Make sure it’s compatible. If this is the case, check out our ultimate guide to building a golf simulator for home. Something Everyone Should Know Before Buying Any of These Products

Having now spent dozens of hours testing launch monitors, and talking to hundreds of readers about their experiences with portable launch monitors, I wanted to add a quick disclaimer here.

When it comes to any launch monitor, much of its accuracy is going to come down to proper setup.

There are a lot of variables at play here:

• Lighting
• Indoors/Outdoors
• Where the device is positioned
• Weather
• And so on…

Spend some time to test and dial in your launch monitor. ALL of the devices here are capable of achieving great results relative to their price point. 

But in most cases, they also can give you pretty inaccurate results if they’re not set up properly.

For literally every single device on this list I’ve heard from multiple people that it’s “great and accurate enough for their needs,” or “it’s horribly inaccurate.”

Now, especially on the lower end, you can expect some more variable results. But in most cases, if things seem wildly off, it likely has something to do with your setup and environment. So just keep this in mind as you’re deciding whether or not a launch monitor is right for you or not.

The idea of a home golf simulator used to be the stuff of science fiction. Now, it’s becoming an increasingly common reality for more and more golfers.

Why?

First, it’s because today’s golf launch monitors are incredibly accurate and capable of producing shot data so good that it can be used to play very realistic simulator golf.

And second, it’s because the affordability of these products has gotten to the point where you now have multiple options for legitimately great golf launch monitors that start at less than $1,000.

That wasn’t true even just four years ago.

So, if you’re like most golfers, you’ve probably started to dream about your own simulator setup.

But if you have, you may have become overwhelmed by all of the variables involved. There are a lot of questions that go into it. Things like:

• How much space do I need?
• How much do I need to spend on a golf launch monitor?
• What kind of enclosure or hitting bay do I need?
• Do I need a projector?
• What kind of screen do I need?
• What kind of hitting mat do I need?
• Do I need a dedicated computer for my golf simulator setup?
• How hard is it to set up a golf simulator?
• How much will all of this cost?

It’s a lot to consider. And if you start poking around the internet, you’re likely to confuse yourself even further.

But I’m going to show you that there’s a turnkey solution that addresses just about everything and takes all of the guesswork out of planning your dream simulator setup.

That’s what we’re breaking down today. I’m going to show you how you can get almost everything you need for a home golf simulator with just one click. And I’m even going to give you my recommendations for best golf simulator setups by price. I’ll also discuss what’s not included in these turnkey solutions.

Before we go any further, the main thing I want to impress upon you is this: You can have a golf simulator in your home. All you need is the budget and the space.

I know that it may seem like there’s a ton that goes into this. But that’s the beauty of this post. I’m going to show you how you can do all of this without pulling your hair out in frustration and confusion. And I’m going to give you options for all kinds of budgets.

What Is A Golf Simulator?

As you likely already know or assume, a golf simulator is a setup that allows you to simulate an actual round of golf.

You use real clubs to hit real golf balls.

You can even play on simulated versions of real golf courses that include all of the yardages, hazards, green undulations, and elevation changes of the real-life location. You can hit shots on a variety of virtual driving ranges or play different games and challenges and even compete online with other sim golfers.

Let’s walk through the core components that make up a golf simulator.

What Do I Need for a Golf Simulator Studio?

The main component of a golf simulator is a golf launch monitor. This is the device that reads the golf shots to capture data like how far the ball carried and rolled out and in which direction it was traveling and curving. Different golf launch monitors are capable of recording different data metrics, and some are more accurate than others. Think of the golf launch monitor as the brains of your simulator setup.

Then you have your simulator software. This works in tandem with the golf launch monitor. In essence, the golf launch monitor talks to the simulator software, telling it everything it knows about the golf shot that you just hit. The software then interprets that data and overlays it onto a simulated image of whatever environment you’re playing in.

Say you are playing a simulated version of Pebble Beach’s iconic Par 3 number 7. You would hit your approximately 100-yard tee shot, and the golf launch monitor would read your swing and contact to determine where the ball was headed. With that information, the simulator software would show your ball flying through the air towards the Pacific Ocean and (hopefully) landing on the green before rolling out towards the hole.

In order to run your simulator software, you of course need some kind of computer. Some golf launch monitors and sim software packages work with mobile devices like a phone or tablet. Others require a more robust computer with a powerful processor.

Remember when I said that the turnkey solutions I’m going to share include almost everything you need to achieve a simulator setup? Well, the one main thing that’s missing from these packages is the computer.

You may already own a computer that will work for your simulator setup. Or you may choose a golf launch monitor and software package that works perfectly fine with the cell phone you’re already using. Some software is going to require the horsepower of a dedicated gaming computer.

For these reasons, we’re going to stay away from recommending any specific computers in this post. Once you choose your sim studio package, you’ll get a better understanding of what you need for a computer.

But for what it’s worth, I personally use: 

• Acer Predator Helios 300
• 16GB Ram
• 1TB SSD.
• Intel Core i7
• GeForce RTX 3070

This is the model I have, with a little bit more RAM – and is a pretty good deal for around $1k.

So we’ve talked about the golf launch monitor, the simulator software, and the computer. Now, if you want a dream simulator setup that allows you to watch your golf shots flying in front of you just like out on the actual golf course, you’ll need a projector and a screen. Your computer and software will send a signal to the projector. And it will in turn cast an image of your simulated experience onto the same surface into which you’re hitting the golf ball. Both the projector and screen are included in the packages I’ll recommend.

Then you’re going to need some kind of enclosure to corral the golf ball after it hits the screen and to protect your surroundings from wayward shots. All of that is also included in the below turnkey simulator packages.

And of course, you’re going to need a hitting mat off of which you’ll hit your shots. You guessed it. That’s also included.

You also have the more affordable option of building a sim studio without a projector, impact screen or enclosure. You could instead pair a golf launch monitor with a hitting net. You won’t see the ball flying in front of you for the ultimate realistic simulator golf experience, but you can instead watch that action on a computer, tablet, or phone set to the side. If you go this route, you’ve got the chance to play simulator golf at home for just $1,000.

How Much Space Do I Need for an Indoor Golf Simulator Setup?

To hit golf shots indoors with complete comfort and confidence and to be able to accommodate both left- and right-handed golfers as well as tall golfers all with one setup, we recommend a space that is at least:

• 10 feet high
• 15 feet wide (if you’re playing with both righties and lefties)
• 16 feet deep (camera-based golf launch monitor requires less room)

Now, you certainly can get away with less room than this. Camera-based golf launch monitors, for example, sit next to the golfer rather than behind them the way that radar-based units do. That means that if you choose a camera-based device like the SkyTrak+, you don’t need a full 16 feet of room depth.

Then there’s the matter of golfer height and swing plane. A tall golfer with a steep swing is going to need higher ceilings than a shorter golfer with a shallower swing. A lot of golfers have put together successful indoor simulator setups with 9-foot-or-even-shorter ceilings. It really depends on your situation.

Just be careful not to put a hole in your ceiling – I speak from experience here.

Those space recommendations are by no means set in stone. Depending on your individual variables and which package you choose, you may very well be able to have a perfectly functional simulator setup with considerably less space.

Budget is no longer the biggest limiting factor when it comes to home golf simulators.

The biggest component that holds back most golfers from their dream sim setup is ceiling height.

But even if you don’t have room indoors, you can play simulator golf outdoors at home using a hitting net. And if you do get a hitting net, Net Return is the way to go. The ball automatically returns to your feet after each shot, which is obviously super convenient.

So I told you how incredible a golf launch monitor the Bushnell Launch Pro is.

But you know what I didn’t mention? If you want to play simulator golf with a Launch Pro, you’re going to have to pay a $499 annual subscription.

The way around that subscription cost is with the Foresight Sports GC3, which is the exact same launch monitor as the Bushnell Launch Pro. I know it’s confusing. Read this if you want the details.

The key difference is that the Foresight Sports GC3 is a one-time purchase. No keeping track of and continually paying subscriptions. You get everything you could want right out of the box.

Like the Launch Pro, the GC3 is also available as a Ball Only model or Ball and Club Data model.

Now I know I mentioned that the Ball and Club Data model gives you as much information as you could want, and it’s true. But for some people, that extra club data is overkill.

Ease of Setup: The Rapsodo Shines Here

Setting up the Mevo Plus is straightforward, but you’ll need to be precise with your alignment to get accurate readings. It also requires a stable Wi-Fi connection, which can be a hassle.

The MLM2PRO shines with its easy and quick setup. Its higher positioning makes alignment a breeze, and it connects smoothly to your device.

Accuracy: Both are Great, but FlightScope Wins Out

Accuracy is arguably the most important factor when choosing a launch monitor. After all, what good is a device if it doesn’t give you reliable data?

The thing I’ve always loved about the Mevo Plus, is that when setup properly, it’s nearly as accurate as devices that cost 10x more – both indoors and out.

Throw in the Pro Package and Impact Detection add-ons, and you unlock the whole D-Plane suite of club statistics – all of which are surprisingly accurate for such a small device.

The Rapsodo MLM2PRO is no slouch in the accuracy department, either.

This is especially true when you’re able to use it indoors or into a net with Rapsodo RPT balls, which help more accurately track spin rates.

I recently put it up against a Trackman indoors, and was surprised by how close it got:

Winner: FlightScope Mevo Plus – For golfers who need the most robust accurate data, the Mevo Plus is the way to go. 

Space Requirements: About the Same

Not everyone has a spacious garage or backyard to set up their golf simulator, so space requirements are an important consideration. 

The FlightScope Mevo Plus requires a fair amount of room to function properly. It needs about 7-8 feet behind the ball and an additional 8 feet in front, which can be a bit challenging if you’re working with limited space. This makes it better suited for larger indoor areas or outdoor setups where space isn’t an issue.

The MLM2PRO needs a similar amount of space with 8 feet from the ball to the net, and at least 6.5 feet to from the unit to the ball. 

This is one area where a predominantly photometric system has the advantage, as by placing it beside the ball, rather than behind it, it cuts your space requirements in half.

App Experience: One is Pro, One is Not

The Rapsodo MLM2PRO app, on the other hand, is designed with the beginner in mind, and makes it easy for anyone to get started. The app also includes some fun features, like the ability to easily review your swing videos, which adds an extra layer of engagement.

Winner: FlightScope Mevo Plus – Everything about it just feels more professional.

Data and Metrics Offered: A Clear Winner

For the data junkies out there, the range of metrics a launch monitor can provide is crucial. The FlightScope Mevo Plus doesn’t disappoint in this area. With the Pro Package, it offers an extensive array of data points, including advanced metrics like club path and face angle. Doppler radar, 2 cameras, simulator features and more – for under $1,000?

It felt like a shoe-in for best launch monitor under $1,000.

But once I (and others) got our hands on it, there were some problems.

The MLM2PRO was buggy.

Wifi issues abound.

Missed shots.

When it worked it was great, but when it didn’t?

It was borderline unusable.

Well, that was April 2023.

Now I’m updating this in July 2024, and the giant question is:

Did Rapsodo fix the issues?

Do all the modes work as well as they should?

And is it now the best launch monitor under a grand?

Today, I’m going to go into detail on all of that and more.

And just to make one thing really clear up front:

Yes, they’ve fixed all the bugs that plagued the early version of the product

Let’s jump in.

First Impressions of the Rapsodo MLM2Pro Launch Monitor

Out of the box, it’s clear that Rapsodo is serious about this product. It feels extremely well put together, with thoughtful packaging and presentation.

It’s a step up from the original MLM. 

The Rapsodo MLM2Pro comes with a sturdy case that makes it very portable. I’ve found it to slide easily into any golf bags, even the Sunday Ryder, which has a smaller garment pouch than most.

The MLM2Pro is made up of two pieces, the device itself and its stand.

Despite its plastic build, the device feels relatively high-end.

The tripod feels like a dichotomy, however. The mount for connecting the stand to the MLM Pro is made of an extremely robust metal. It really gives you confidence the legs aren’t going to come off mid-use. 

But the legs themselves are made of cheap feeling plastic.

As a whole though, the MLM2Pro feels well-built, and representative of its $699 price point.

Upon setting it up, I quickly noticed it sits up much higher than any competing products like the Mevo Plus or R10. This makes it a little more conspicuous on the range, but in practice, I found this made it easier to ensure it was aligned and set up properly.

One of the biggest differences between the new MLM2Pro and both the older MLM and R10 is the implementation of dual cameras, along with Doppler Radar.

You can clearly see the cameras and they add to the design of the device. We’ll talk more about what those cameras do in a minute.

I’m also happy to see it charges via a standard USB-C cord. 

My general thought upon first checking this launch monitor out? So far so good.

Setting Up the Rapsodo MLM2Pro

Setting up the Rapsodo MLM2Pro is very simple and straightforward.

As with any golf tech device, I recommend you spend a few minutes at home before you plan to use for the first time to make sure the app is up to date, the latest firmware is installed, and that you’ve got all of your personal settings dialed in.

The MLM2Pro gives you a few options for pairing to your phone or tablet which is great.

You can connect both to the same WiFi network if you have one available. 

If there isn’t one available, then it will output its own signal which you can use to connect.

This is one of my big complaints about the FlightScope Mevo Plus. With that, you have to connect via the Mevo Plus wifi signal.

So if you’re using an iPad that doesn’t have cellular, you’re doing a little back and forth to make updates. By being able to connect both your tablet and the MLM to a local network, you solve this problem – or at least make it significantly better.

It’d be nice to see a Bluetooth option, but this is a minor issue.

I’ve had no problems connecting the MLM2Pro to either my phone or tablet, using both a local network and Rapsodo’s network. The prompts are very clear, and the connections have always been very strong.

Building Your Bag Within the App

They’ve made a great quality of life update since it’s initial release when it comes to building your bag.

It used to force you to input the club type, make, model, and a display color.

This required a lot of scrolling and is a tedious process.

Now, it doesn’t force you to do any of this – so if you just want to quicky get going, and don’t care about having all of your specific club data in there – you don’t need to input it.

MLM2Pro Alignment and Getting Ready to Use

This is hands down one of the best features of the Rapsodo MLM2Pro – it’s so easy to set up for use.

You open the app, connect your device using one of the aforementioned methods, and then select a handful of details about your session:

• Mode: Driving Range or Hitting Net
• Ball type: Range, Premium, Callaway RPT
• Elevation: Sea Level, Current Elevation, Custom

From there you’ll confirm your alignment. One of the built-in cameras shows the scene, and you’ll make sure the target line is properly aligned, and that your ball is placed within the outlined hitting zone.

Hit continue and you’re ready to rock.

This is similar to the alignment process for the FlightScope Mevo Plus. It’s a bit more basic, but in my experience I actually found it to be easier to set up correctly and it takes less time than the FlightScope – which is one of the major benefits this has over the Mevo Plus.

I attribute this to the added height that the Rapsodo has over the MLM. This makes uneven ground behind the ball less of a factor.

The downside is that the hitting area is much smaller than on the Mevo Plus. But we’ll talk about how that comes into play later on.

Both of these launch monitors have a leg up on the Garmin Approach R10, which doesn’t feature built-in camera.

Using the MLM2Pro: Initial Impressions

The hitting screen when using the MLM2Pro features 3 metrics across the top, and a down-the-line view using the built-in MLM camera.

The default metrics are carry distance, total distance, and side carry which tells you how many yards off-center you hit it. But other metrics that the Rapsodo measures that you can switch out are:

• Club speed
• Ball speed
• Smash Factor
• Launch direction
• Launch angle
• Descent angle
• Apex
• Shot type
• Spin (if using Callaway RPT balls)

The MLM 2 Pro is extremely fast, and after you hit a ball, it displays a full-screen overlay showing these metrics in bigger numbers.

A few seconds later it automatically shows a replay of your swing on video.

I actually found myself really enjoying this feature. If you don’t have a device like a deWiz and you’re working on swing changes, getting immediate visual feedback I’ve found to be very useful for making adjustments.

Up to 10k swings can be saved if you have a Premium Membership, which we’ll talk more about in a bit.

I do wish there were a better way to star your best swings, or ones you want to go back and review. If you’ve hit 50 7-irons in a session, it can be a little tricky to know which shots are relevant for further review when you just have a giant list of shots.

If you don’t like the camera view, you can switch it to show an overview of the range instead. When you’re outside, this will be a GPS aerial view of your actual range – which is a cool feature.

It’s especially cool if you happen to be at a higher-end course that has very well-defined greens on the range. This makes it easy to get a sense of accuracy with your shots when hitting towards specific greens.

Getting Your Data During a Session

I was expecting the MLM2Pro interface to feel a little more, well, pro.

After using the FlightScope Mevo Plus for so long, I’ve gotten used to being able to view any and all of my data however I want.

That system essentially feels Trackman-esque when it comes to getting your metrics.

The MLM2Pro, however, is definitely taking more of the “consumer” approach, similar to the R10.

One of the main examples of this is with how you’re able to get your data.

On your phone, you can only see 3 data metrics at a time during a session. You can switch out what those 3 are, but I haven’t found a way to see a full screen of all of the included metrics. This feels like an odd omission, and may simply be my own incompetence.

Even the R10, which feels much more geared toward casual consumers, allows you to see all of your data.

This gets a little bit better in an iPad where you’re able to see a few more metrics at a time due to the larger screen. But still, not everything.

You’re able to get more data when you’re reviewing your rounds after the fact, but even then, I’ve found it tough to get all the data points for any given shot in its entirety.

This absolutely makes it more user-friendly, and easier for beginners to digest and understand. But being able to configure more would be useful for more experienced golfers.

Rapsodo Range

Despite my issues being able to customize your screen and metrics in the practice mode, the newer Rapsodo Range does give you more versatility.

There are a couple different ranges to choose from, and you’re able to see all of the metrics available to you all at once.

Why you’re not able to do something similar in the regular practice mode is odd, but if you don’t care about the video replay of your swing, and prefer more metrics as well as a shot tracer – this is the mode for you.

Is the Rapsodo MLM2Pro Accurate?

This brings us to our most important question: is the Rapsodo MLM2Pro accurate?

And I’m happy to report, that yes, the Rapsodo absolutely seems to be accurate. Frankly, more so than I was expecting it to be.

But first off…

What Metrics Does the Rapsodo MLM2Pro Actually Measure?

This is where things can get confusing when comparing launch monitors. Just because a product will give you a number for a specific metric, that doesn’t mean it is actually measuring it. In many cases, it is using an algorithm to make its best guess of a specific number based on the metrics it does directly measure.

For instance, the Garmin R10 only directly measures four specific measurements:

• Ball speed
• Clubhead speed
• Launch angle
• Launch direction

Everything else is calculated based on that.

Generally, the less expensive a launch monitor is, the fewer things it’s directly measuring.

The Rapsodo MLM2Pro measures similar numbers to the Garmin, but adds a big feature with accurate spin rate and spin access when using the RPT balls.

The MLM2Pro provides 13 metrics including: 

• Ball Speed (measured)
• Club Speed (measured)
• Launch Angle (measured)
• Launch Direction (measured)
• Spin Rate (measured)
• Spin Axis (measured)
• Smash Factor
• Carry Distance
• Total Distance
• Descent Angle
• Side Carry
• Apex
• Shot Type

But the good news is that despite the fact many of these numbers are calculated via an algorithm, it’s still very accurate.

Using the MLM2Pro Indoors with RPT Balls

Let’s start with indoor accuracy.

For this long term update, I went to the indoor simuilator at my club and compared the MLM2Pro directly against a Trackman.

The results? Fantastic.

Carry distances across my gap wedge and 7 iron were on average less than 2 yards difference. With driver it was an average difference of about 5 yards.

Clubhead speed and spin rates were very close as well.

It’s not dead on, but when you’re looking at a $700 device compared to one that’s $35,000? It’s close enough to be useful.

That said, I’d expect the spin numbers to be a little bit less accurate when hitting outdoors on a range.

The benefit the MLM2PRO has is there’s a dedicated high speed camera used to specifically track spin rate, when paired with RPT balls.

RPT stands for Rapsodo Precision Technology. Essentially these are Callaway Chrome Soft balls that use “True Vis” technology with special dot patterns around the balls. This allows for the impact camera built into the MLM 2 Pro to accurately measure spin and axis numbers for your shots.

The system works great. It gave me closer spin numbers to the Launch Pro than the 2020 FlightScope Mevo Plus did – which is saying something. I still need to do a comparison with the latest 2024 Mevo Plus.

When you switch to the “Impact Camera” view, it’s pretty wild to see the ball moving in 240fps.

That said, I found the framing was often off for this zoomed-in view. So while it helps give more accurate spin numbers, reviewing the camera footage itself hasn’t been particularly useful.

I’ve found that the RPT balls aren’t the most durable, either. After one session all 3 of my balls were pretty scuffed up. It’s also a little annoying having to retrieve balls every 3 shots. So I’ll likely pick up a dozen to make practice a little more convenient and to help the balls last a bit longer.

Using the MLM2Pro Outdoors

The MLM2Pro also works (mostly) great outdoors on the range.

There’s an extra step in the setup process where you tell the app which range you’re using, and then orient yourself to show it which direction you’re hitting.

This was one of the unique features of the original MLM, and I’m glad to see it was brought over here.

I haven’t had a chance to do a proper distance comparison to a higher-end device outdoors yet, but in testing distances with an accurate rangefinder, it seemed pretty spot on.

Using the MLM2Pro as a Simulator

When it comes to a golf simulator under $1k, the Rapsodo is going to be one of your best bets. 

Similar to the SC4 and R10, it comes with a free basic mobile license for e6 simulator software. Where the SC4 only has one course, the R10 has 6 (including Bandon Dunes!), and the MLM2PRO has 5 courses, 2 practice ranges, and 3 games.

The courses it includes are:

• Aviara
• Stone Canyon
• The Sanctuary
• Wade Hampton
• The Belfry

Along with e6 access, if you have a Rapsodo Premium Membership (more on that in a minute), then you can use “Rapsodo Simulator” to play “simulated” rounds.

This is almost identical to Home Tee Hero for the Approach R10.

It works really well, and I like that you can set your approach parameters to take over for the lack of putting capabilities.

For instance, you can set it so that if you hit it within 10 feet it’s a 1 putt, and 30 feet it’s a 2 putt. On the green outside of that is a 3 putt.

Since the Rapsodo doesn’t include any putting, this is a clever way to do it. And let’s be honest, putting on simulators never works all that well anyhow.

They’ve also made a recent upgrade to add elevation to these courses, which only adds to the experience.

I do find it a little annoying to have to constantly go back to your phone to switch your club when you’re in this mode.

I’d love to see an Apple Watch interface so you can do this on your wrist without having to constantly bend down to your phone to select a new club.

This is one area where the original MLM has a leg up, in that you can hold the club over the camera and it will recognize which club you’re using and switch it within the app.

Garmin includes a clip for your phone that you can attach somewhere close by, which is a really nice feature, and I found myself missing this in the Rapsodo.

The Rapsodo Combine

This might be my favorite mode in the entire MLM2Pro system.

Essentially you’ll hit 24 balls with 3 different clubs total. 

You can set the specific distances and clubs you want to use.

But for example, the first 2 shots might be 100-yard shots with your Gap Wedge.

Then the next is 165-yard shots with your 6 iron.

Then 2 shots to hit the best drives you can.

You repeat this 4 times.

At the end of your combine, it will show you the dispersion for all your shots, give you a handicap number for your performance with each club, and then give insights and advice on what to practice based on your numbers.

This is one of the most useful and enjoyable launch monitor modes I’ve found to keep the range interesting.

In fact, I enjoyed this so much, that during my testing, I actually found myself getting into practice mode – which is rare when I’m testing devices.

I had to hit 24 shots, so figured I might as well get some extra value out of it.

One quirk though, is I haven’t been able to use the Combine in landscape mode, even on my iPad, which feels like a big miss and easy fix.

Data and Insights

I love the fact that the Rapsodo data is generally accurate, but I’m not a fan of the fact that there’s very little customization to how you’re able to receive and view that data.

This is one of the big areas where it’s clear Rapsodo is targeting the consumer market as opposed to more diehard, data-focused users.

But there’s a silver lining here, and that comes in the form of Insights.

Again, because this is aimed at more casual golfers that may not necessarily know what all of the data points mean, it gives you insights about each session.

It tells you things like how you compared to different level handicaps both in terms of distance and accuracy, and then it gives you recommendations for things to practice in your next session.

It’s presented in a super clear and genuinely useful way that makes these feel like an integral part to the system rather than an afterthought.

Honestly, I wish that both the Garmin and the Mevo Plus had more of this.

A little more help with how to decipher the data could go a long way toward educating users and building long-term loyalty.

Do You Need the Premium Membership to Use the Rapsodo MLM2Pro?

The short answer here is no. But the more realistic answer is a bit murkier.

There’s a little bit of confusion on the difference between the Premium membership for the original MLM and the new MLM2Pro.

The membership page on the Rapsodo website lists membership as $99, whereas on the MLM2Pro product page it states it’s $199.

With the older MLM, unless you wanted a ton of video storage, the Premium membership didn’t feel necessary.

But if I understand things correctly, after your free 1-year free trial with the MLM2Pro, you’ll need the Premium Membership to access:

• Rapsodo Combine
• Rapsodo Insights
• Spin rate/spin axis
• Rapsodo Simulator
• Rapsodo Range
• Impact Vision

Basically, most of the features I love most about the MLM2Pro, will only work if you have a subscription.

It would also seem that one of the included cameras is deactivated completely without the subscription. 

So while yes, you can still use the device without being a member, it essentially removes most of the features that make the device so special.

This makes membership feel pretty essential to me, which I know a lot of people will not be happy about.

TL;DR: Here’s a quick recap of the Pros and Cons

So, you didn’t feel like reading all 4,000 words of this Rapsodo MLM2Pro review? No problem, here are the basics that you should know:

Pros of the MLM2Pro:

• High-quality design and presentation
• Extremely easy to set up and begin using
• RPT balls captured spin data accurately
• Most accurate sub $1k launch monitor I’ve seen
• The built-in camera for video replays works very well
• Combine mode is both fun and useful
• Insights are a useful feature for the less technically inclined

Cons of the MLM 2 Pro:

• Getting more than 3-4 data points to display at once is difficult/not possible in some modes.
• RPT balls aren’t the most durable
• Can only get spin data indoors
• No smartwatch support
• Premium membership is more expensive than Garmin’s and is basically a necessity if you want to use the best features of the device.

Final Thoughts on the Rapsodo MLM2Pro

Overall, I’m incredibly happy to say the Rapsodo MLM2Pro has mostly lived up to the lofty expectations set for it.

It’s hands down the most accurate launch monitor I’ve used under $1k, and the ease in which you can set it up and begin a session makes it that much better.

The dual cameras are truly a nice functional addition, whether it be for high-quality swing reviews, or the ability to get impressively accurate spin numbers when using RPT balls – even if the impact camera view isn’t particularly useful.

The Combine and Insights are great features, and when you throw in the Rapsodo Simulator mode you truly have a feature-packed device. That said the fact all of these are premium features is a bit of a bummer, and makes it all but a requirement to pony up the $199/year fee for a Rapsodo membership.

I’ve had the occasional issues with missed shots. There were a few annoyances with my initial setup. And I really do wish the interface could be tweaked to allow you to view the data in more ways.

But for $699? Damn. This is one hell of a device.

It’s amazing to see how quickly technology has advanced to give us a product with such useful data, at such a reasonable price.

I’m not sure why, given the price point, I was expecting the MLM2Pro to be more of a competitor to the Mevo Plus. It’s really a pretty different product for a different market. It’s more of a direct competitor to the Garmin Approach R10. They both have their place, they both have their strengths and weaknesses, but there’s no denying the MLM2Pro is going to continue to turn a lot of heads.

I have zero hesitations in recommending it. It’s an incredible value for the price, and even with the Premium membership fee, it’s quite simply one of the best golf tech products on the market.

Even as someone who’s made it my job for the past several years to review these devices, I’m as shocked as anyone else at how quickly new, very legitimate products are coming to market. 

And the most surprising part? The recent development of great launch monitors for less than $1,000.

It wasn’t long ago at all — seriously, a couple of years — that for less than $1,000, you would be limited to something like an early-generation OptiShot. Fun and entertaining, sure. But nothing that was going to spit out the kind of accurate data that you could dependably use to improve your game. Or that would give you access to a full-blown golf simulator experience.

That has all changed. And I for one, am stoked.

But it’s also, well… confusing. Like, really confusing. We went from having no legitimate budget options to now having multiple worthy options.

We’ve arrived at the day where a lot of people can transition from thinking, “Man, wouldn’t it be cool to be able to play golf in my garage or basement,” to now thinking, “Well, I’m for sure going to set up my home golf simulator, but I’m confused about which one of these things is the right one for me.”

The Best Golf Launch Monitors Under $1,000: Rapsodo MLM2PRO vs. Garmin Approach R10 vs. Swing Caddie SC4

There are three legitimate contenders for the best golf launch monitor under $1,000: the Rapsodo MLM2PRO, the Garmin Approach R10, and the Swing Caddie SC4.

Here’s the thing: They’re all great. But they’re also all imperfect.

So knowing which one to get can be confusing. And annoying. And frustrating.

But I’ve got you. We’re going to score these devices in 13 categories. We’ll keep it simple, with a 0 (the lowest) through 3 (the highest) rating for each launch monitor in each category. At the end, we’ll total up the category scores to see how they stack up overall.

So, let’s get into scoring the Garmin Approach R10, Rapsodo MLM2PRO and Swing Caddie SC4. Which of these golf launch monitors reigns supreme in the oh-so-important under $1,000 category?

PACKAGING AND PRESENTATION — A TIE!

• Rapsodo: 3

All three launch monitors are evenly matched in their presentation. You won’t get anything too extravagant or luxurious, but you wouldn’t expect that at this price point. What you do get is functionality, sturdiness, simplicity and an overall feeling of solid quality, commensurate with the asking price. 

I will say that, in the case of the Garmin Approach R10, the packaging is considerably nicer than the Garmin products I reviewed before this one. They significantly upped their game. And Rapsodo and Swing Caddie seem to have followed suit.

Overall, all three of these devices are well packaged with even better fit and finish than what you find with some higher-priced golf launch monitor options.

SIZE/PORTABILITY — RAPSODO TAKES THE LEAD

Garmin’s compact design is slightly undermined by its chunky case. In fact, the R10 is smaller than the Rapsodo MLM2PRO, but because the R10 case makes it tough to toss in your golf bag easily, I’m giving the nod to the MLM2PRO. It’s the better on-the-go option for going back and forth to the range or wherever else you might enjoy a practice or sim sesh.

The Swing Caddie SC4 gets knocked down a couple of pegs because it doesn’t even come with a carrying case. That is, unless you want to spend $60 to buy one. Now I will say that the available-for-purchase case is pretty sweet. It’s high quality and comes with a useful alignment plate. But $60? Come on, Swing Caddie. Just build it into the price and give us what we want out of the box.

EASE OF SETUP – ANOTHER TIE!

• Rapsodo: 3

The setup and pairing processes for all three devices are straightforward and intuitive. That’s one of the best selling points about each of these products. I’d say that, even for the technologically challenged, you could likely be up and running with any of these within an hour of unboxing. Trust me when I say that is not the case with all golf tech.

When trying to rank one of these ahead of another, I kept going back to, “Yeah, but this one was just so easy to set up, as well.” So, I’m giving them all full points for this category.

ACCURACY — RAPSODO EDGES OUT

With dual cameras and Doppler, you’re getting an awful lot of shot-tracking capability in the Rapsodo MLM2PRO. That said, to take full advantage and to get accurate readings on spin rates, you need to use RPT balls, which are essentially Callaway Chrome Soft golf balls with large dots on them that allow the Rapsodo to better read the shot. The RPT balls are expensive (like $70 per dozen) and they wear out kind of quickly. So, there’s that.

Now, are the Garmin Approach R10 and Swing Caddie SC4 also accurate? The answer is a resounding “yes,” but to varying degrees.

The R10 is mostly rock solid in terms of accuracy. However, it does occasionally struggle to pick up more subtle flight paths, like a baby draw or fade.

The SC4 was actually much more accurate than I could have ever expected from a device at its price. Even the spin rates were in line with the Bushnell Launch Pro, the most accurate launch monitor I own. However, things started to get a little dicey with the SC4 the further up my bag I went. Turns out, woods and drivers… Well, I found the SC4 to be a little untrustworthy when it came to giving me consistently accurate data with those longer clubs.

SPACE REQUIREMENTS — SWING CADDIE’S SHORT-SIDED ADVANTAGE

Each of these units measures shots from behind the golf ball. That’s a space-killer relative to launch monitors like the Bushnell Launch Pro or SkyTrak+, which measure from the side of the ball. It means that to use the Rapsodo, Garmin or Swing Caddie, you need more room depth.

But the Swing Caddie only needs to be set up 5 feet behind the ball. The Rapsodo and Garmin both need to be set up at least 7 feet behind the ball.

So, what’s 2 feet? Well, an awful lot if the space in your garage, basement, living room or any other area that’s already tight. In fact, 2 feet of room depth could be the difference between pulling off an indoor golf simulator setup where you live and shopping for a new house with more room.

SIMULATOR OPTIONS/COMPATIBILITY — GARMIN OFFERS MORE FLEXIBILITY

• Rapsodo: 2
• Garmin: 3

Garmin extends its simulator compatibility beyond E6 and Awesome Golf to include The Golf Club 2019. You know what that means: More golf course options. Any golf simulator junkie is going to love that (even if a license to it costs more than the R10 itself…)

Rapsodo is in the middle of the pack, offering compatibility with E6 and Awesome Golf. Nothing at all wrong with that.

Unfortunately, Swing Caddie only works with E6. And it’s a relatively limited experience, with only one course available for free.

Alright, if you hate subscriptions (who doesn’t?), you’re going to love the Swing Caddie SC4. That’s because you really don’t need to pay for anything beyond the unit itself.

With the Garmin Approach R10, there’s an optional $120/year subscription. Yes, it’s optional, but you’re most likely going to want the Home Tee Hero and other features that it unlocks.

And then there’s the $199/year Rapsodo MLM2PRO subscription, which you basically have to have in order to use most features. Boo!

If you’re looking for something more “Pro” that doesn’t have a subscription, then the FlightScope Mevo+ is definitely the unit you’ll want to take a look at.

APP EXPERIENCE — RAPSODO EXCELS

The Rapsodo and Garmin app experiences are very similar. Both are absolutely functional and for the most part, enjoyable. I do wish they were a little more robust, more like the SkyTrak+ or Mevo Plus experiences, but I’m really not complaining. I give a slight edge to Rapsodo. But I will say that if you already own a Garmin product and are comfortable and familiar with that ecosystem, then I think it’s worth sticking with Garmin.

As for the Swing Caddie… How can I say this gently? Well, the app experience sucks. It feels unprofessional and lame. I’m holding out hope that things will improve with time.

DATA AND METRICS — RAPSODO OFFERS MORE INSIGHT

The Rapsodo gives you pretty much everything most golfers will ever need to know about their golf shots. With two cameras and Doppler radar, this device picks up almost everything. You even get video of your swing! Metrics include:

• Carry distance
• Total distance
• Side distance (how many yards off-center you hit the shot)
• Club speed
• Ball speed
• Smash factor
• Launch direction
• Launch angle
• Descent angle
• Apex
• Shot type
• Spin (if you’re using the Callaway RPT golf balls)

The Garmin gives you most of the same data as the Rapsodo and it also has video capability. However, as a radar-based launch monitor, the Garmin is only actually measuring ball speed, club speed, launch angle, launch direction and back-swing and down-swing times. For the rest, it’s using an algorithm to calculate what it thinks are the likely results. I found spin rates to be totally inaccurate and not even worth considering.

The Swing Caddie offers the least data, including just carry distance, launch direction, swing speed, ball speed, smash factor, launch angle, apex and spin rate. But you know what? Most of us don’t need more than that anyway.

BUILT-IN SCREEN — SWING CADDIE’S UNIQUE FEATURE

Being the only launch monitor on this list with a built-in screen, Swing Caddie stands out.

Why is that a big deal? Because it means that you can get immediate feedback without needing another device.

This is perfect if you’re the type that just wants to head to the range, quickly set up your launch monitor and start getting data. Rather than messing around with making sure everything is connected between the device and your phone or tablet. This feature goes a long way in making the Swing Caddie an easy choice for golf minimalists.

Now you can, of course, use the Swing Caddie with the app loaded onto your phone, tablet or computer. Unfortunately, for me, that’s been a worse experience than just hitting shots and seeing the read-outs on the built-in screen.

RELIABILITY — THE GARMIN JUST KEEPS WORKING

Overall, I’ve had very good experiences with all of these golf launch monitors. But the Garmin Approach R10 has been a cut above in terms of consistency and reliability. I’ve used it for two years now and really can’t think of any issues. It’s just a workhorse.

The Swing Caddie SC4 has also been steady-eddy. Again, it’s the simplest of the devices when you want to just get numbers from the built-in screen. And while the app leaves a lot to be desired, it is still reliable. It’s just that the app gets in the way of an overall enjoyable user experience.

The Rapsodo MLM2PRO has worked out a lot of bugs, but there are still users complaining about connection issues, missed shots, and dropped connections during a session. That’s frustrating, for sure, it seems to be less of an issue with it’s most recent firmware update.

PERSONAL AFFINITY — RAPSODO APPEALS OVERALL, BUT IT DEPENDS ON YOUR NEEDS

For me, the detailed practice modes, accurate spin rates, and more robust feature set give Rapsodo the edge.

But there’s a lot to like about each one of these devices. They all have their pros and cons. My preferences won’t necessarily be the same as yours. That’s what this list is all about: An opportunity for you to choose what’s best for you.

So, What’s the Best Launch Monitor Under $1,000?

Ok, seriously, I didn’t do this on purpose. I went through each category and assigned numbers based on my experience with each of these devices relative to each other.

This is how it came out. I thought about changing it to have a more definitively clear “winner.”

But this feels like an accurate reflection of each of these. There isn’t a clear winner. It really does come down to which device fits your needs best – as they all do a good job with waht they promise to do.

Disregard the total points, if you wish. What I would recommend is that you drill down on the categories that are most important to you. Pay attention to those scores more than any others.

Do you just want an all-in-one unit that you can bring out to the range and get quick numbers without having to fumble around with connecting to a phone or computer? Then get the Swing Caddie SC4. It also happens to be the least expensive and takes up the least amount of space indoors.

Do you want a reliable workhorse that does everything either best or nearly best and gives you the most simulator software compatibility? Then it’s the Garmin Approach R10. Especially if you’re already a Garmin user.

Or do you want what I think is the most accurate overall, most portable and the launch monitor that delivers the most data? If so, then the Rapsodo MLM2PRO should be a no-brainer.

The bottom line is this: We’re all spoiled. Not just me. Not just you. All of us. To think that we have this many great choices for personal golf launch monitors that cost less than $1,000, is seriously crazy.

So, rather than stress about which is the right choice, get on with picking one and start enjoying the insane amount of fun that these things can unlock for your golfing life. You really can’t go wrong with any of these choices.

If you’ve been trying to find the best golf launch monitor under $500, there are probably two names that keep popping up: the Flightscope Mevo and the Rapsodo MLM.

There’s a reason for this. 

When it comes to launch monitors at the $500 price point, these two are the very best we’ve seen.

They’re the most full-featured, enjoyable to use, and accurate.

I’ve used both the Rapsodo and Mevo extensively, and honestly? They’re both great. 

So if you’re worried about investing in the wrong one, let me put your mind at ease: there is no bad choice.

Both are great devices.

But let’s be real, you’re likely not going to buy both of them – so you’re probably trying to figure out which one is the best for you.

And that’s what this article is for.

On the surface, you might think these two devices are basically the same. Both of these launch monitors tell you how far you hit the golf ball, but are portable and easy to use at the range. However outside of that, they each approach these tasks in different ways – and the feature sets of each are surprisingly different from one another.

So, are you ready to figure out if you should buy the Flightscope Mevo or the Rapsodo MLM?

Great, let’s do this.

Presentation: Which Device Looks Better?

Before we jump into how each of the products work, let’s talk about the look and the packaging of each.

The packaging on both products looks and feels high-end.

Out of the box they include everything you need to get going right away, and are both good looking devices.

The FlightScope Mevo looks like a miniaturized version of their more professional launch monitors – and when I say mini, I mean it. This thing is tiny. 

I love this, because it’s easy to toss in your bag, and have it handy whenever you need it for a range session.

The MLM comes with a higher-quality canvas carrying case similar to what you would find with a typical rangefinder. The FlightScope simply comes with a small nylon bag to put it in.

The MLM has the sturdier case, but is enough bigger that I’d leave it in my locker or car when not using it. The Mevo I wouldn’t worry about just leaving in my golf bag.

The Rapsodo MLM takes a different approach in how it functions compared to the Mevo. It’s designed to be a dock, that your phone actually sits in – and then the app does the heavy lifting in terms of display while you’re using it.

It works well regardless of whether you’re using an iPhone or an iPad, and having a built-in way to hold your phone is nice.

The downside to this is if you’re someone who wants to spend a lot of time in the app while you’re using the product. As going over and bending down or removing the phone from the dock repeatedly can get annoying.

You won’t have this problem on the FlightScope, but you will have the opposite issue of figuring out where to put it. You still need to find a spot where you can see it, or prop it up to capture your swing with the camera.

They have an adapter for $30 that works like a tripod, to help make using the app easier.

Verdict: Tie. I like the look and form factor of the Mevo better, but the Rapsodo gets extra points for the higher-quality carrying case. Either way both look and feel like high-end devices both in terms of the packaging as well as the devices themselves.

Ease of Use

I’ve found with any golf Bluetooth tech device, there’s usually 10 or 15 minutes of a learning curve as you’re getting going.

Inevitably something won’t connect, or you’ll have missed something in the setup process causing your new toy (ahem, training aid) not to work properly.

I experienced some of this with the Rapsodo MLM. 

The initial setup process is easy. It pairs right away via Bluetooth, you tell it what clubs are in your bag (if you haven’t already done so), and you orient the map to your exact spot on the range.

The first time I used it, I did all of this, but then didn’t get any readings. It worked after finally resetting the device.

Now it usually gets going without a hitch, but I’ll occasionally have trouble getting it to automatically register what club I’m using (a feature we’ll talk more about in a minute). Or occasionally, it won’t quite be positioned correctly and will need adjustments to give the most accurate results.

These issues don’t happen all the time, but they happen enough that it’s worth mentioning.

The FlightScope Mevo on the other hand might be the most seamless golf tech product I’ve ever used. It connected immediately when I fired it up, I stuck it behind me on the range, and from the jump it was giving me great results.

It’s important to keep in mind though that the Mevo doesn’t have quite the feature-set that the MLM has. This is what makes deciding between the two a trickier proposition.

Verdict: FlightScope Mevo. One of the easiest to use golf tech products I’ve ever used.

What Statistics do FlightScope Mevo and Rapsodo MLM Give You?

This is where the real meat of this comparison comes in, the features.

Because if I’m being candid, there’s a lot that I personally like about the FlightScope. For some reason to me, it feels more high-end. And the user experience has been so seamless and positive that I often find myself thinking I prefer it over the Rapsodo.

Or at least, I do until I use the MLM again and realize just how feature-heavy it is.

I’m not going to go into all of the features that each have in this comparison review, but I’ll focus on a couple of the big ones that stick out for me.

Both devices will tell you how far you hit it, both have them will save your stats for future analysis, and both of them shoot video allowing you to playback your shots frame by frame.

But the single biggest drawback of the FlightScope Mevo? There’s no lateral data.

So it might show that you hit your driver 276 yards, but it doesn’t give you any data as to whether you hit it straight or not.

As someone who has a notoriously bad slice, this is information that I rely on as I’m working to improve my game.

The Rapsodo does have this data, and frankly, they do a really good job of displaying it through the app. Because the app finds the range your on, and has you pinpoint where you are on the range, it can overlay each of your shots on top of it, which is phenomenal for visually recognizing where you’re hitting the ball.

But the Rapsodo isn’t perfect. While they have valuable lateral data, they don’t have height statistics* or spin rate: the Mevo does.

So this is going to be a big decision point for you, what’s more useful between lateral data and spin data?

If one is significantly more valuable for your training goals, then the decision of which one to buy becomes a bit easier.

Verdict: Rapsodo MLM. The lack of lateral data on the FlightScope is just such a negative for me, that the Rapsodo wins this one pretty easily.

*The Rapsodo does have height data if you purchase their “Pro” membership. I’ll talk about that more below.

Other Features of Each Device

When it comes to other features, the Rapsodo is the star of the show here.

It does a better job of visually representing your shots, helping you figure out club gapping and more.

Being able to see shot dispersion get better (hopefully) over time, over an aerial view of your range is super useful.

They also have built-in games you can play, and online competitions through the app to make practice a bit more fun.

The Rapsodo MLM has a nice feature where it will automatically recognize what club you’re using. You simply hold your club in front of your phone while it’s in the dock, and in a couple of seconds it will recognize it and update.

In practice, I’ve found this works 75% of the time. I’ve run into some issues where it didn’t recognize it right away, so I had to go down and tell it manually what club I was using. Not a big deal, but it hasn’t always been the most reliable feature.

One area where the FlightScope has a big advantage over the MLM however is in it’s compatibility with the Apple Watch.

I just happened to be wearing my Apple Watch when I went out with the Mevo for the first time and realized there was a Watch App. Getting all of my numbers and data on my watch was incredibly convenient –  much more so than I expected. 

Both apps can give announce your distances, but if you’re on a crowded range you’re likely to turn this off. So the watch is a great way to get all the data you need quickly and easily, without having to turn to your phone after every shot.

Verdict: Rapsodo MLM. There’s just more to do with the app. Whether you’re looking for additional data, additional charts, or additional ways to make your practice more interesting, the Rapsodo is simply more feature-heavy. The caveat to this is if you’re an Apple Watch user. I found this one feature alone with FlightScope to outweigh nearly all of the extra stuff within the MLM.

User Interface of the App

There are two ways to look at this one: how does it look, and how is it to use.

Quite simply, the Rapsodo app looks better. It feels more modern, fonts and shot information look better, and the GPS range data and graphs look great.

But it can be clunky at times. I’ve often found myself fumbling through the Rapsodo app, and the user experience isn’t always great. It gets easier as you spend more time with it, but I’ve always struggled with it a bit.

The FlightScope app on the other hand doesn’t look great. It feels outdated and less modern when compared to the Mevo. The menus also aren’t labeled all that well, so it can take some guesswork to figure out what does what when you’re first using it.

But and this is a big but, it just works. It works incredibly well. It’s easy to use, and you have all the information you need. The only slightly confusing part is in customizing which statistic information you want it to display after each shot. But even that is pretty quick to figure out.

Verdict: Tie. One looks better, one is easier to use. But both get the job done.

Accuracy of the FlightScope Mevo and Rapsodo MLM

All of this doesn’t mean much if these devices aren’t accurate.

So…are they?

Generally, yes both devices are accurate enough to be true practice aids that you can rely on.

That said, they aren’t perfect.

Between the two, I’ve always trusted the data out of the FlightScope Mevo more. It’s always seemed pretty dead on.

I trust most of the data I get out of the Rapsodo MLM.

In my original review, I had someone who works there message me to say that it looked like my device wasn’t properly located behind the ball in a couple of my photos.

I’ve made adjustments in subsequent sessions that seem to have helped, but also it should be pretty self-explanatory where to put the MLM. And where I had it originally, shouldn’t have been so far off that it gave me bad data.

I also had an issue where the range I was on, didn’t have a ton of flat space directly behind the mat I was hitting on – so positioning was a bit of a challenge.

With both of them there will be occasional outliers, but you’ll see this on any launch monitor at times.

It can be particularly pronounced on the MLM because it adds a shot tracer to the videos. Every once in a while it might show a draw when you know you hit a fade – so when you see that you question the accuracy.

But the vast majority of the time both devices really feel pretty dead on, which is pretty remarkable given their price point.

Verdict: Flightscope Mevo. I know there are people who have done more scientific tests than me, that say accuracy is pretty similar. I’m just speaking from my personal use, that the FlightScope has felt more accurate for me. So take that with a grain of salt.

Using the FlightScope Mevo and Rapsodo MLM Inside

Fortunately, both of these launch monitors now work indoors. The MLM got an update since launch that unlocked this capability.

Unfortunately, last time I tried to create an indoor setup to test golf products, I put a hole in my ceiling.

I haven’t had a chance to get back out to where I review indoor products since this update was made, so I haven’t tested either of these out indoors yet.

I do know the FlightScope provides little silver stickers you put on the ball that is supposed to help with accuracy. 

However, I can’t yet speak to how well this works for either the Mevo or MLM. I’ll update when I can.

A Quick Note on “Rapsodo Pro”

So unlike FlightScope, Rapsodo offers a $99.99/year “Pro” account which adds additional features to your device, specifically three things:

• Gives you cloud storage for up to 10k videos
• Gives you height/Apex data
• Gives you slow-motion video replay

It’s up to you if you think this is worth it, but here are my thoughts.

I personally don’t need 10k videos of my ugly golf swing. If I have a particularly good swing, I’ll save a few from each session, that’s it. I believe the standard app lets you save up to 100 videos without paying extra – for me this is fine. But saving thousands of videos per user on your servers costs money, so I get they need to charge for this.

I don’t think you should have to pay extra for height data, however. It’s kind of a random metric to hold locked away for the subscription. The device can obviously do it, so it kind of feels like they said “We need one more feature to add to the Pro account, what should it be? Height, yeah, let’s go with that.”

It’s included with the Mevo for no extra cost.

And as for slow-motion video, you can scrub your videos frame by frame in the app as is, so that works fine for me when it comes to assessing my swing.

But this may be an important feature for you depending on how you use it.

At $100 a year, it’s not like it totally breaks the bank, but it still feels steep for what you’re getting – especially considering it feels like the height and slo-mo should be built into the device you’re already paying nearly $500 for.

Who Should Buy the FlightScope Mevo

Despite both of these launch monitors doing the same thing, tracking how far you hit the ball, chances are one will be better for you than the other. 

First, let’s look at who should buy the FlightScope Mevo.

The Mevo is for you, if:

• You don’t care as much about lateral data on your launch monitor. This is still the biggest drawback of the Mevo. If this isn’t a problem for you, you’ll likely love the device.
• Spin rate is one of the key metrics you look at. The MLM doesn’t have this, so if you want spin rate, get the Mevo.
• You want the easiest and fastest app-based launch monitor under $500. It isn’t as sexy, but the app works better and gets you distances faster.
• Portability is really important to you. Both devices are portable, but the Mevo is tiny.
• You’re an Android user. The MLM is Apple only at the moment.
• You don’t care about gamification on the range. You won’t find any of that in the FlightScope app.
• You think you might later upgrade to a higher-end FlightScope model. If you later think you might upgrade to the Mevo+ or a more professional FlightScope solution, having all the data already could be helpful.
• You have an Apple Watch. This integration works better and is more useful than I expected.

Why You Should Buy the Rapsodo MLM

There are a lot of compelling reasons to choose the FlightScope Mevo, but fortunately, there are an equal number of reasons to go for the Rapsodo MLM. Here are the big ones:

• Lateral data is important to you. The Mevo doesn’t have it, so if you want it? Get the MLM.
• You want the most data you can possibly get. Despite not having spin rate, the MLM has more features and more data.
• You like seeing the ball flight with shot tracer. MLM has a built-in shot tracer.
• You want a social aspect to your practice. There are both games you can play against yourself, and social competitions with other users through the app. FlightScope doesn’t have this.
• You don’t want to buy a separate cell phone holder or tripod. You don’t need to do this with the FlightScope, but if you want to use it for video it would be very handy. Not an issue with the MLM
• You’re a visual person. Simply put the graphs, scatter plots, and visuals of the MLM are much better than the FlightScope
• You don’t think you’ll ever want to upgrade to a higher-end model. There isn’t another model with the MLM.
• You’re cool rolling with the occasional app hiccup or user experience issue. Most sessions I’ve had at least a minor issue with the MLM, but usually, it’s nothing major and only takes a minute to sort. As long as you’re cool with working through these kinks, this will be a great product for you.
• You’re an Apple user. If you have an iPhone you get your choice between the two, but since MLM doesn’t support Android yet, you’ll want to look elsewhere unless you have an iPad you would use.

Honestly, the fact either of these exists for under $500 is pretty remarkable. It’s a testament to just how far technology has come over the last few years.

To get this kind of data, at this price point, in a product that easily fits inside your golf bag is pretty impressive.

I’ve used both of these launch monitors extensively, and honestly? They’re both great.

Are they as good as a Trackman or a FlightScope X3? Of course not, but they’re likely good enough for you.

Rapsodo recently announced the MLM Pro 2, which will be a more “prosumer” device coming in at $699. The good news is that they’re still going to support and keep updating the original MLM.

The better news? They dropped the MSRP from $499 to $299. At $299 this becomes a no-brainer for someone wanting to explore a personal launch monitor.

But that’s not all!

Frankly, it was one of the items that excited me the most. I mean, to have a portable launch monitor that connects to your phone, and fits easily in your golf bag?

If it works, that’s a pretty cool piece of tech that has the potential to have a real impact on your game.

It’s especially appealing considering it comes in around $500, making it a fraction of a traditional Trackman, or even less expensive options like a Bushnell Launch Pro or FlightScope Mevo+.

But the consumer launch monitor market is getting more and more fierce these days. Which begs the question, is the Rapsodo Launch Monitor king of the hill at that $500 price point?

The answer is a resounding….maybe.

Update February 2023: Rapsodo MLM Now $299

This past week Rapsodo announced the successor to the MLM, the MLM 2 Pro. 

The new device is fantastic, and it has a number of impressive features that you wouldn’t expect to see on a product retailing for $699.

In releasing details of the MLM 2, they also announced that they’re lowering the retail price of the original MLM from $499 to $299 – which makes this a pretty killer deal.

You’d occasionally see it during big sales for as low as $349, but for under $300? This is hands down the best launch monitor on the market.

Even with the release of the new model, they’ve continued to invest in the MLM, it’s tech, and features.

First Impressions of the Rapsodo Launch Monitor

Everything about the Rapsodo Mobile Launch Monitor (or MLM for short) appealed to me.

Unlike the Swing Caddie SC200 which I reviewed a few years ago, it has a built-in app for being able to easily review your statistics and track improvement.

But where it really sets itself apart is with the built-in camera. It records and plays back every single shot you hit, while also adding a shot tracer.

Pretty cool tech.

But what was it like out of the box?

The packaging was very nice overall, and the device came in a case similar to what you’d find a high-end range finder shipped with. It’s very sturdy and high-quality canvas, with a zipper pouch for the device.

Inside was the Rapsodo MLM, a USB charging cable, and some quick start instructions.

I’ve made the mistake many times of opening up a new product at the course. Fortunately for my first foray into the Rapsodo I was smart enough to take it out and charge it the night before.

Ease of Setup of the Rapsodo Launch Monitor

Once I got to the course, I took the device out, turned it on and went through the setup process on my phone – which was remarkably easy.

The instructions were very clear in the app, and with the latest version of the app there is no additional calibration you need to do with the device and the camera.

It connected via bluetooth right away.

I told it which clubs I had in my bag via a simple drag-and-drop interface with the app, and I was ready to go in just a few minutes.

I told it which golf course I was at, set my point to the exact spot on the range I was, and told it which direction I was hitting – should be ready to rock.

So with my phone tucked into the device, bluetooth connected, camera on, and a green LED light indicating I was ready to hit, I stepped up to the ball, and made a perfect swing.

Then….

Nothing.

The LED light immediately turned blue indicating it was processing the shot, but it just stayed blue.

It never went back to green,

I figured ok, maybe the device wasn’t close enough to the 8 foot distance behind the ball recommended?

Moved it around, set it on it’s case to make sure it was perfectly level behind the ball…

Nothing.

Restarted the app. Light turns green.

Hit another ball.

Nothing.

Hmmmmm, we’re not off to a good start here.

There was about 15 minutes of this before, I fully restarted my phone turned off the device, and went through the process again.

I stepped up to the ball after getting the literal green light, ripped a 7 iron, and lo and behold I turn around and see 161 yards. 116 ball speed. 89 clubhead speed.

Ok, now we’re onto something!

And to jump ahead and give you peace of mind, in the now three times I’ve gone back and set it up from scratch everything has worked perfectly each time.

For various reasons I’ve found that with many high tech training aids, the first time setup, even when it’s simple, can run into unexpected issues.

So I’m confident this was an isolated incident and not an indicator of any underlying quality issues.

Using the Rapsodo Launch Monitor

Let’s cut right to it, the Rapsodo MLM is a cool device.

Under normal practice conditions, you’ll hit a ball, turn around, and it will tell you those three metrics: distance, ball speed, and clubhead speed, while also replaying the video of your swing with a shot tracer added.

I found the video to be even more useful than I expected. As I’m battling with years of coming over the top, to be able to see video of each shot while I actively work to correct it is hugely valuable.

You can also easily export your video to your phone with the stats embedded in the side, which is a nice feature.

With the standard MLM purchase of just the device, you’re supposed to get 100 saved videos within the app, so it will keep the video of your 100 most recent shots which you can review in the app.

For some reason, when I tried to go back and review my videos, for each one I get an error that says “insufficient package size.”

There are an endless amount of jokes I can make about this, but I’m going to spare you on that one.

I’ve got an email into Rapsodo Support to see if I can figure out what the deal is, and I’ll update as soon as I hear back.

Another cool feature is that if you change clubs, all you have to do is hold the end of your club in front of the camera for a few seconds, and it will automatically recognize the club change.

In practice, this worked pretty well, although I did have an issue where it thought my gap wedge was a 6 iron – but it only took 5 seconds to update it manually via an icon on the screen.

Rapsodo Mobile Launch Monitor Performance: Did it Live Up to Expectations?

After spending a few hours with the Rapsodo Launch Monitor I’ve found it to be a bit of a mixed bag in terms of performance.

85% of the time it seemed to work very well.

This is consistent with pretty much every launch monitor I’ve tested in this $500 price range. I’ve found the Mevo and the R10 to be slightly more accurate. But with most of these, it really comes down to ensuring you’ve set it up correctly and in optimal conditions.

On my first use with it, I don’t think I quite had it positioned correctly behind me on the range, which led to some occasionally weird numbers. I had the MLM off-center, and a little bit more behind me than where it should have been directly behind the ball. This caused shots that were pulled across me to register weird numbers since the initial ball flight was blocked by my body.

When this was setup, it could also cause issues with the shot tracer feature, as to be expected.

But I’ve now had the Rapsodo for over two years, and rarely have any wonky readings like this anymore, once I focused on making sure it was aligned properly.

When I first got it, you were unable to use it indoors or into a net, however with a recent app update you can do this.

This is a fantastic feature, especially considering many of us aren’t able to play year round.

I haven’t been able to test inside, but will update this review when I do.

$19,000 Launch Monitors vs. $500 Launch Monitors

For devices that are $500 and below, I don’t think there’s a single product that is perfect. When you think of the staggering amount of variables and technology that go into these devices, it’s pretty amazing what they are able to for a few hundred bucks.

However, there isn’t a single one I’ve tested that truly gave Trackman like accuracy and performance.

But for literally about 1/40th of the price of a new Trackman? You start to see the value in these devices. Not to mention when you throw in the portability, and ease of setup – they can still be valuable tools even if they aren’t dead on every single time.

If you’re considering the Rapsodo and it’s closest competitor, the FlightScope Mevo – Mevo vs Rapsodo.

Other Rapsodo Launch Monitor Features

On top of just the standard practice features we’ve talked about, there are some other pretty cool features of the Rapsodo device.

One is being able to see a scattershot of all of your shots on a GPS overview of your range after each section.

I found this to be particularly interesting to get a sense of how consistent I actually was (usually, not very).

There are also built-in games you can play, like closest to the pin and long drive challenges which are a fun diversion and help to keep things interesting while you practice.

The Swing Caddie had a few basic games as well, and this is one area where I’d love to see some of these lower-priced launch monitors really get creative.

The Rapsodo MLM App

Overall the app works well. It’s easy to pick the clubs in your bag, connect to Bluetooth, and do any of the other things you need to make the product work.

There’s an “explore” tab where you can watch other user’s swings, which I found surprisingly enjoyable.

It’s taken a little while to fully understand how to use the Sessions and Stats pages to dig into all of your data after the fact, but it’s all there, and the diagrams and scatter charts are a great way to visualize your game.

I think they could probably improve the UX a bit to make the stats easier to navigate, but overall the app does it’s job and any issues I have with it are minor.

Rapsodo Launch Monitor vs. Swing Caddie SC200

This isn’t a 100% fair comparison, because it’s the Swing Caddie SC300 that is at the same $500 price point, and includes an app – but I have yet to test it out.

Which device is best for you will really depend on what you want to use it for.

The Swing Caddie SC200 is $200 cheaper, gives similar results, and has a remote control which I found really helpful for switching modes.

However, there is no app or video for reviewing data later.

If you’re the type of person who loves looking at video of your swing, will drill down to the analytics of your shots, and wants to be able to track improvement via an app over time?

It’s worth the extra money for the Rapsodo Launch Monitor.

If you like the app tracking analytics, but don’t care about video? You might check out the SC300.

And if all you want is a device to use on the range to get distances and make your practice a bit more enjoyable?

Save some money and pick up the Swing Caddie SC200.

Rapsodo MLM vs. FlightScope Mevo

If you’re looking at a Rapsodo, inevitably you’re probably going to come across the FlightScope Mevo as well. Based on my experience these are the two best launch monitors in the $500 range.

But for two products that essentially do the same thing, they both have very different strengths and weaknesses.

Short version: Mevo is a little more user-friendly with the app, and possibly slightly more accurate. Rapsodo has far more features, and features lateral data which can be a dealbreaker for many.

Final Thoughts on the Rapsodo Golf Launch Monitor

The big reason I personally will continue to use this specific device is to:

1. Have a way to get easy video reviews of each swing
2. Make the range and practice more fun

And the Rapsodo Launch Monitor is great for this.

It gives good data, great video feedback, is fun to use, and gives me all the stats in my phone to review whenever I want.

I’ve also been impressed witn the updates they’ve made over the last couple years. Not only does it feel more accurate now than when I first tested it, the ability to use in nets and indoors will make this a strong choice for a lot of people.

It’s not perfect, but like I said above, I don’t believe any of the products in this price range are.

If you’re someone that wants to truly get better, track your distances, and make your range sessions more fun in the process? I’m not sure there’s a better device than the Rapsodo MLM.

I think both are solid devices and worth the money, as long as you understand their limitations and know what to expect.

Best Affordable Home Golf Simulator: OptiShot2

Now we’re getting into the big leagues of indoor golf. Most every golfer dreams of a home golf simulator. Somewhere where you can get in swings, play shots on iconic courses and do it all from the comfort of your own home.

Space ends up being a limiting factor for many. You’ve got to have high enough ceilings and you’ve got to have an area large enough to accommodate a hitting bay and computer setup.

The other big limiter is, of course, price. You can drop upwards of $70K on a fully legit simulator setup. That’s a non-starter for most. But you don’t necessarily have to break the bank to get in the game. Just in the last several years, some budget-friendly options have begun hitting the marketplace.

Our go-to solution for the home golf simulator that won’t require a loan is the OptiShot 2. At less than $400, this feels almost too good to be true. While this won’t quite replace the reality of the range or a day at the course, there aren’t a whole lot of cooler things you can own for under $400.

As with any simulator, putting is far from ideal. But the internet is full of ideas for a setup that might work for you.

At the end of the day, if you’ve got a home golf simulator, you can count yourself among the cool ones. Your friends will say the same. And if they don’t? Well, you need better friends.

Simulators Outside of the Home

If you don’t have the space for your own in-home golf simulator setup, there’s a decent chance you can access one nearby. More and more indoor golf businesses are popping up in almost every city across the country.

If you’re not familiar with options in your area, search the internet or call your local course or club to ask about what might be available. NextGen Golf has a searchable database of simulators around the country. You’ll typically find options to rent simulator time for anywhere from $20 to $50 per hour. And in a lot of locations, you’ll have the option to join a league.

Best Launch Monitors Under $500: The Mevo and MLM

As an alternative to a simulator, you can access similar stats with a launch monitor. If you’ve got space for full swings – a garage often serves the purpose – you’re in business. A mat, a net and a launch monitor can teach you a lot about what you’ve got going on in your swing.

The Flightscope Mevo and Rapsodo MLM are co-owners of the throne in this under-$500 space. You get a hell of a lot with both products. They each go about it a bit differently, but both of these launch monitors are the real deal and can give you a full diagnostic look at your golf swing.

Launch monitors are probably best used at the range where you can compare the data to the ball flight you’re seeing with your own eyes. But as an indoor application, a launch monitor takes hitting balls into a net to an entirely different level of feedback and opportunity for improvement.

PGA Tour 2K21 is hands-down the best golf video game out there. It’s available for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows and Stadia.

You can play 15 different real-world courses, including all of the big TPC tracks, East Lake, Riviera, Quail Hollow and several others. You’ve got 12 different tour pros to choose from, including DeChambeau, Sergio, JT, Kuchar, Furyk, Gary Woodland and others. 

And one of the coolest features is the Course Designer mode. Just like it sounds, you can actually lay out your own course. 

What’s even cooler is that you can play courses that other gamers have designed or replicated. So while places like Augusta, Cypress Point, Pine Valley, etc. aren’t on the list of courses that come with the game, there are users who have mimicked the actual layout of these classics, including every bunker, each tree and all of the elevation changes.

Best Virtual Reality Golf Experience: Pro Putt by Topgolf

If you’ve got an Oculus Quest virtual reality setup, you can really get cutting-edge with your golf at home pursuit. Pro Putt lets you putt on virtual golf courses as well as play some of Topgolf’s most popular games.

You use one Oculus controller, held as you would a normal putter. The motion, ball position and setup are just as in real life. 

The true reality of it stops there, of course. Yes, you can see the contour of the greens and there’s some training benefit to be discovered, but this is much closer to video game golf than simulator golf. Still it’s quite cool, and for those who’ve yet to experience VR, it’s a must-try.

Indoor Golf: If You Can’t Be On the Course, This Ain’t a Bad Second Choice

The evolution of products and the introduction of new technologies have changed how to practice golf at home. Just a few years ago, indoor golf was limited to just a putting mat and probably of dubious quality. Things are entirely different now.
